After a long silence, he just wanted to go to Alexander’s apartment and stay with him. He didn’t say it directly. He made all these little games just to make her guess. He was drunk too.
So Evie asked Grace to take them to the apartment.
When they reached the downstairs of the apartment, Grace helped carry the luggage up.
Evie opened the door and let Owen in.
Then she said, “It’s exactly the same as before. Nothing has changed!”
The hidden meaning was: Don’t be jealous. This is still your territory.
“I wouldn’t know if it changed. This is my first time here!” Owen looked around and replied with a smile.
So this was where Alexander kept his secret hideaway.
It was so simple!
“You’ve never been here before?” Evie asked in surprise.
Had she sent him to the wrong place?
“No. Alex values his privacy too much. He never lets anyone come to his private apartment.”
“Huh?” Evie was stunned. “Then where do you guys usually hang out?”
“There are plenty of places to hang out. You don’t have to go to a private apartment.”
“That’s true. A hotel works too!” Evie muttered.
“What?” Owen didn’t hear clearly and asked.
“Nothing, nothing. Let’s go!” Evie said.
“Go where? We just got here.” Owen was confused and was about to sit down on the sofa.
“Didn’t you just say Alexander never lets people come to his private apartment? Let’s leave first. Otherwise, if he finds out, I’m dead!” Evie said anxiously.
Owen froze for a moment. Then he burst out laughing. “Why are you so afraid of Alex? It’s not like he’ll eat you.”
“He usually doesn’t let us come because he’s a clean freak. Eccentric and picky.”
“Just don’t bother with him.”
“Don’t worry. It won’t be a problem.”
“Do you have anything to drink? I’m dying of thirst!”
“Oh, what would you like to drink?”
“What do you have?”
“Beer, Coke, and tap water.”
“Tap water?”
“Yes. If you don’t want beer or Coke, there’s only tap water. But it’s filtered. It’s basically the same as drinking water. You can drink it safely.”
“No mineral water or anything?”
“No.”
“You’d better have Coke!” Evie suggested.
“Why?” Owen felt a little crazy.
Just now, when he asked what he could drink, she seemed happy.
“Alexander hasn’t come back yet. If you drink beer, what if you get drunk?” Evie said awkwardly.
“One can of beer gets me drunk? Forget it. Just give me a Coke.” Owen rubbed his aching temple.
Now he finally understood why Alexander married Evie.
One freak and another freak together.
Made for each other.
“Ice or not?” Evie asked again.
“Whatever!” Owen’s headache got worse.
Evie went into the kitchen to get the Coke. It was iced. She handed it to Owen.
When Owen took the Coke, he couldn’t help but take a sharp breath.
Drinking ice-cold Coke in this weather?
Well, he’d just drink it. No point being picky.
Owen drank his Coke and sat on the side for a long time. He didn’t know what to do.
After a while, he thought, maybe he should boil some water to make tea for the guest.
So he filled a pot with water and started boiling it.
Owen looked at the bottle Evie was holding. His eyes twitched. “Isn’t that mineral water?”
“It’s bottled. I usually use it for tea. Do you want some?” Evie looked up at Owen and asked.
“Forget it. I’ll just drink the Coke,” Owen said.
Just then, Evie’s phone rang.
Seeing the caller ID, Evie picked up as if she had seen a savior.
“Alexander, I’ve got Owen. We’re at the apartment now.”
The subtext was: What do I do next?
“The apartment?” Alexander frowned and asked.
“Yes. Your apartment!” Evie said cautiously.
She remembered what Owen had just said. Alexander hated it when others came to his private space.
Now she had brought Owen back to his apartment. Was she dead?
“What is he doing in our apartment?” Alexander asked.
“He just got home from work. Are you going to invite him to dinner tonight to clean him up?” Evie hesitated for a moment, walked away, and asked.
“I’ll call Owen. You take care of your own business. Don’t worry about him.” Alexander felt his headache getting worse.
Clean him up? Did that kid think too much?
Did he really think he had just come back from years abroad?
“Oh, okay!” Evie was relieved.
The internal conflict between the two of them should be solved by themselves. She shouldn’t be dragged into it.
As soon as Evie hung up, Owen’s phone rang.
Owen looked at the caller ID and answered, “Are you getting off work? I’m almost hungry.”
“You’re Mr. Owen. You can still be hungry. Do you want me to call a hotline for you?” Alexander sneered.
“No, no, no trouble. Are you getting off work or not? Your sister-in-law hasn’t eaten yet. It’s not good for you to starve her like this!” Owen had to shift the focus.
“She can cook for herself. She won’t starve.”
“Tsk, tsk, Alex. Do you want a wife or a cook?” As soon as Owen finished, he realized Evie was still there.
So he apologized to Evie, indicating he was just joking.
“My wife is versatile. You don’t have to be jealous,” Alexander replied calmly.
“It’s great to have a wife!”
“Better than someone who doesn’t even have a girlfriend!”
“I… You’re ruthless!” Owen choked.
“I still need to call Uncle Owen to remind him that you want to get married now.”
“Alexander—okay, okay, you win. I won’t argue with you, you stingy guy. I’m going back!” Owen admitted defeat directly.
“Since you’re here, have a light meal before you leave. I don’t want you to go back and say I’m not hospitable. I get off work at 8:30,” Alexander said.
“You should have said that earlier. I’ll wait for you.” Owen immediately laughed.
“If I didn’t treat you, I don’t know when you’d care.”
“Where? Am I such a mean person?” Owen said with a smile.
“It’s better than it’s been!”
“Okay, okay, but I can’t help you. Then my sister-in-law and I will wait for you to get off work. Ha! That’s it. Goodbye!” Owen said and hung up.
Otherwise, he didn’t know if Alexander would change his mind.
That guy was very insidious. His mood was like June weather. It could change at any moment.
After Owen hung up, he looked up at Evie. But the seat Evie had just been sitting in was empty.
“Evie?” Owen said, looking around.
No response.
No way!
After one phone call, he was left here alone.
The hospitality of this family was terrible.
Sure enough, birds of a feather flock together.
Owen was about to call Evie and ask where she was.
Then Evie came out of the kitchen with a tray of things.
“I can still run!” Owen said with a smile.
