Chapter 61

“Run where?” Owen asked, looking confused.

“Nothing!” Owen shook his head, realizing how absurd his own thought was.

“Let’s have some fruit! Did Alexander say when he’d be off work?”

“Eight o’clock. We’ll have dinner together when he gets home.”

“Then have some fruit first. I’m going to buy groceries,” Evie said.

The fridge was nearly empty.

She and Alexander could make do, but it wouldn’t be right to be a bad host.

“Don’t bother. We’ll just eat out.”

“It’s no trouble. Alexander likes cooking at home too!” Evie replied with a smile.

“No way. Does he even have time to cook?” Owen exclaimed.

Wasn’t that guy busier than him?

“I’ll do the cooking!” Evie explained.

“…” Owen was momentarily speechless. Then he muttered, “Maybe marriage isn’t such a bad thing after all.”

The next second, he felt like he’d been infected by some virus.

He must not think like that!

Marriage was a grave. He would never do something so suicidal.

“Anyway, I’ve got nothing to do. I’ll go shopping with you,” Owen said.

“Huh?” Evie looked at him in surprise, thinking she’d misheard.

“I haven’t been to a supermarket in ages. I’ll just tag along,” Owen said.

Going grocery shopping sounded ridiculous.

He couldn’t even tell a vegetable from a radish.

“Oh, okay, let’s go!” Evie said.

So they went downstairs together.

Owen assumed Evie would drive.

Instead, they both headed for the bus stop.

As they walked toward the gate of the community, Owen thought Evie’s car must be parked there, so he followed her silently.

When they reached the gate, Owen realized something was wrong. “Aren’t we driving?”

“I can’t drive! It’s not far. Just two stops away,” Evie said, turning her head.

“You can’t drive, but I can! Two stops is still a distance!” Owen said quickly.

“You can drive, but I don’t have a car for you to drive!” Evie said with a smile.

Owen’s jaw nearly dropped.

Who could tell him what kind of miserable, inhumane life Mrs. Sterling was living!

She had no money, had to cook, and didn’t even own a car.

She was worse off than a live-in nanny!

What stunned Owen even more was that they weren’t taking a taxi. They were waiting for the bus!

“Aren’t we taking a taxi?” Owen asked again.

“No, it’s just two stops. It’ll cost us two dollars. I have some change here!” Evie smiled and shook her head.

Owen was already fuming.

The people in this family were impossible to understand by normal standards!

One by one, they were getting more and more abnormal.

So, for the first time in his life, Owen Clarke took the bus.

And there were no seats. He had to stand!

Luckily, it was only two stops. They’d be there soon.

Otherwise, Owen would have gone crazy.

Finally, they got off the bus and arrived at the supermarket.

Pushing a cart, Owen walked alongside Evie.

“What kind of food do you like?” Evie asked politely.

“Anything. I’m not picky, as long as it tastes good!”

“Then I’ll just buy whatever.”

“Okay!”

“You can go look around. Don’t follow me. I’ll do the shopping.”

“Fine!” Owen nodded.

He hadn’t even thought of buying his own food.

Over the years, the biggest blow Owen had ever suffered was today.

This little girl named Evie not only ignored him—at the airport, she’d asked Assistant Miller who he was—but now she was telling him to go shopping on his own!

Shouldn’t she feel honored to buy vegetables with him? He was such a pleasant man!

Obviously, he was overthinking it.

Evie was not a girl with normal thinking at all!

Evie went off to shop.

Owen strolled around without much interest, eventually wandering back to the fresh produce section.

From a distance, he saw Evie standing in front of the vegetable area, focusing intently on picking greens.

Anyone watching would think she was taking an exam, she was so serious.

Owen walked over and asked, “What are you picking?”

“Wormholes!” Evie didn’t even look up.

“What?” Owen thought he’d heard wrong.

“Wormholes mean less pesticide was used,” Evie explained. “Are you done shopping?”

“Done!” Owen stared at the greens in Evie’s hand and muttered, “I’d rather eat pesticide residue than bugs!”

“What?” Evie didn’t hear him clearly and turned to ask.

“Nothing. Take your time picking!” Owen said.

Next, Owen followed Evie as she shopped.

It wasn’t so much that he was accompanying her as he was just bored and curious.

Every time Evie picked something, he had a million questions.

For example, “How do you know if these grapes are sweet or sour?”

“I don’t know!” Evie said.

“Then why are you buying them?”

“It doesn’t matter. I’ll eat the sweet ones and give the sour ones to Alexander.”

“No way! You’re abusing your husband!” Owen said in disbelief.

“No, I’m not. Alexander likes sour food!”

“How come I never knew he had that preference?”

“You didn’t know?” Evie turned to look at him.

“No!” Owen shook his head, looking blank.

“It’s okay. Now you know!” Evie comforted him.

He couldn’t help but complain. You’re a pretty lousy lover!

After they bought everything, they went to the checkout.

In the end, Owen paid with his card.

His reason was that he was with a beautiful woman and had no habit of letting her pay.

“But I’m not a beauty!” Evie blurted out.

What she really meant was that she was buying food for herself. It had nothing to do with whether she was a beauty or not.

“You might be a bit far from a beauty, but at least you’re the opposite sex!” Owen said with a smile.

Evie was speechless for a long time.

The cashier tried to suppress a laugh but finally broke into a smile.

She apologized to Evie with a smile.

Then she took Owen’s card and swiped it.

Evie didn’t bother arguing with Owen anymore. After all, he was Alexander’s best friend.

Spending Alexander’s friend’s money was probably the same as spending Alexander’s money!

So she calmed down and pushed the cart toward the exit.

Owen walked beside her and said, “There’s so much stuff. Don’t take the bus back. Let’s take a taxi!”

“Okay, it’ll be hard to carry all this on the bus anyway!” Evie replied with a smile.

She had planned to take a taxi back anyway.

The starting fare was cheap enough.

As it turned out, the taxi dropped them off at the gate of the community. The taxi couldn’t go inside.

They still had to carry everything from the gate all the way back to the apartment.

Owen was about to have a stroke.

After all this time, he hadn’t gone to the supermarket. He’d come to work as a coolie.

Back at the apartment, Evie started washing the vegetables, prepping the ingredients, and cooking.

Meanwhile, Owen was eating fruit in the living room. He didn’t dare offer to help.

Otherwise, knowing Evie’s personality, she’d probably put him to work like a servant.

Being a coolie was one thing. The problem was that he couldn’t actually cook. He’d look too stupid and mentally challenged, and his pride would be seriously bruised!

Instead of humiliating himself, it was better to just eat fruit in peace!
