Chapter 404

Evelyn stayed in the nursery for over ten minutes before stepping out.

The nanny needed rest, and the baby was asleep.

She didn't want to disturb him.

Leaving the nursery, Evelyn spotted Alexander sitting on the living room sofa.

She lowered her head and walked back to the bedroom.

He followed her inside.

"I want a divorce!" Evelyn snapped, her voice sharp with anger.

She threw the words out and climbed into bed.

"Alright," Alexander replied quietly, lying down beside her.

"I said I want a divorce!" She turned over, her tone even more heated.

"I heard you. It's been less than three months," he said with a faint smile.

Evelyn was speechless.

She had promised to give him three months to think it over.

She couldn't break her word.

Unable to argue, she turned her back to him, pulled the covers over her head, and tried to sleep.

This time, Alexander didn't pull the blanket down.

He didn't tell her to stop covering her head.

Instead, he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her close.

The moment her body pressed against his, Evelyn felt a rush of embarrassment.

"Don't touch me!" she protested.

"Evelyn, go to sleep," he replied calmly.

She froze for a second.

Then, as if under a spell, she couldn't find the words to argue.

She just sulked in silence.

Before long, she forgot what she was angry about and drifted off to sleep.

When she woke up, the day was bright.

Alexander was no longer beside her.

Evelyn let out a quiet sigh of relief.

After washing up, she stood by the window and looked out at the view.

Her mood suddenly lifted.

During her hospital stay, she had stared at the ceiling or the dull scenery outside the ward.

Back at Sterling Manor, the view was breathtaking.

The sight from here was unmatched anywhere else.

"Mrs. Sterling, you're awake!"

Hearing Lily's voice, Evelyn turned and smiled.

"I just woke up a little while ago."

"I'll go get breakfast ready," Lily said, heading downstairs.

"You seem to be in a good mood today!" Evelyn noticed the smile on Lily's face.

"Of course, Mrs. Sterling. You're back!" Lily replied proudly.

"Did you miss me?" Evelyn asked with a grin.

"Of course! You don't know, Mrs. Sterling. While you were away from Sterling Manor, I felt like something was missing. Now that you're back, the house feels lively again. I feel so much better!" Lily said cheerfully.

"I'm happy to be missed like this."

"Mrs. Sterling, please don't scare me like that again. You don't know how fast my heart was beating that day!" Lily continued.

"I slipped by accident. I don't remember what happened after that," Evelyn said with a smile.

"It's a good thing Mr. Sterling called and told me to come upstairs to check on you. Otherwise, I wouldn't have known!

Mrs. Sterling, you and Mr. Sterling are truly connected. Whatever happens to you, he senses it right away.

Thank goodness he called in time, or else...

No, no, Mrs. Sterling will live a long life. Nothing bad will happen!" Lily quickly corrected herself.

Evelyn laughed at Lily's adorable reaction.

"Mrs. Sterling, please have breakfast first! I made all your favorites today. Please eat plenty!"

"Thank you, Lily."

"You're still being polite to me, Mrs. Sterling!"

"Lily, did you say Alexander called you upstairs?" Evelyn asked while eating.

"Yes, otherwise I was cleaning the kitchen at that time. How would I have known you had an accident?" Lily nodded.

Evelyn didn't say anything more.

Lily continued, "Mrs. Sterling, you don't know how worried Mr. Sterling was about you while you were in the hospital!"

"I know. He's a good husband," Evelyn replied quietly.

She never denied that he was a caring husband.

But she needed more than just a good husband.

She needed a lover who felt the same way.

Lily praised Alexander again, and Evelyn just smiled faintly without arguing.

Lily must have felt she was talking too much, so she stopped.

But Evelyn asked, "Has anything happened at home recently?"

"Nothing special. The old lady is doing well, but Mrs. Stark sent Violet to find you several times."

"Mrs. Stark was looking for me?" Evelyn asked.

"Yes. You didn't visit her while you were in the hospital. No one dared to tell her about your condition. She was worried about you, so she sent Violet to check on you several times!" Lily answered.

"Call Violet later. Ask her to bring Mrs. Stark to Sterling Manor for a visit," Evelyn instructed.

"Okay, Mrs. Sterling!" Lily said.

Evelyn finished breakfast and went downstairs to see the baby.

The nanny was changing the baby's diaper.

The baby's little arms and legs kicked in the air, a smile on his face.

Evelyn's heart melted at the sight.

She sat beside him, holding his tiny hand.

"Baby, it's Mommy! Did you miss Mommy?"

The nanny quickly finished wrapping the baby in his blanket.

"Mrs. Sterling, please watch the baby. I'll prepare the formula."

"Okay," Evelyn replied, continuing to play with the baby.

Soon, the nanny returned with the bottle.

Evelyn said she would feed him herself.

She held the baby in one arm and the bottle in the other.

She hadn't had a chance to be with him before.

Now, she wanted to spend as much time with him as possible to make up for it.

The nanny sat quietly nearby, chatting with Evelyn about the baby from time to time.

When Isabella arrived, Evelyn had just coaxed the baby to sleep.

"Sister-in-law! You're here!" Evelyn greeted her.

"Where have you been all this time? I couldn't find you!" Isabella said, taking Evelyn's hand.

"I went to give birth, sister-in-law. You haven't seen the baby yet. Let me take you to see him!" Evelyn said with a smile.

She didn't tell her sister-in-law about what had happened recently.

"Gave birth? Wasn't it supposed to be two more months?" Isabella asked in surprise.

"I gave birth early. More than two months early," Evelyn explained.

"Oh!" Isabella nodded and followed Evelyn into the nursery.

Looking at the baby, Isabella's eyes were full of tenderness.

And a strong sense of maternal love.

It was impossible to hide the truth.

"Mom said he looks just like Alexander," Evelyn said.

"Yes, Alexander was the same when he was born. Very small. I was afraid to hold him!" Isabella nodded repeatedly.

Since the baby was asleep, they didn't stay long in the nursery.

They came out.

Lily had washed some fruit and brought it upstairs.

Evelyn invited her sister-in-law to eat some fruit.

She reached for a pear.

Isabella stopped her, saying she was still recovering from childbirth and shouldn't eat cold food.
