"It's fine!" Evelyn said.
She hung up the phone and placed it back on the desk. She moved her notebook closer and continued with her homework.
But before she could type two words, the phone rang again.
Evelyn had to lean over once more to pick it up. "Hello!"
"Wrong number again!" a frustrated voice came from the other end.
"Wait, are you looking for Alexander?" Evelyn asked.
"Yes, who is this?" the person on the other end suddenly perked up, asking curiously.
"I'm Mrs. Sterling—" As soon as Evelyn finished speaking, she heard a dull thud from the other end. Then the line went dead, followed by a series of beeps.
Evelyn was stunned. There was definitely something wrong with that caller!
Just as she was about to put the phone back on the desk, a terrifying thought struck her the next second.
It was a man! A man! A man!
Could he be Alexander's lover?
And what did she just say?
I'm Mrs. Sterling!
Oh no, Alexander is going to kill her!
Worried, Evelyn put down her laptop and paced back and forth in front of Alexander's study, cordless phone in hand.
Alexander had explained earlier—don't disturb him unless it's important. But she had already disturbed him twice in a row, and he looked very unhappy.
If she called him now, would he throw her out?
But this matter seemed much more serious than the previous two incidents!
If, because of her, Alexander and his wife had a relationship crisis, and they ended up separating due to a misunderstanding, and Alexander became emotionally scarred and felt loveless, then she would be guilty!
Pfft, she was overthinking!
But anyway, if the caller was Alexander's lover, those two scenarios were still very possible!
Should she risk her life to save a love that transcended the secular world?
Evelyn took a deep breath and raised her hand to knock on the door when a bell rang.
Evelyn was startled. The next second, she realized it was the doorbell.
She would talk to Alexander after opening the door.
She turned and walked toward the door. After confirming that the person standing at the door was Alexander's personal assistant, Assistant Miller, Evelyn opened it.
Standing at the door was a tall, capable beauty, dressed in sharp professional attire.
"Madam, I'm sorry to disturb you. The items Mr. Sterling requested from the East and West Department are in the bag," Assistant Miller said with a smile, handing over some paper bags.
"No, no, it's me who's bothering you. Please come in and have a drink of water and sit for a while!" Evelyn took the paper bags and said.
"It's very late, so I won't disturb you and Mr. Sterling's rest. This is my number. If you need anything, madam, you can call me directly!" Assistant Miller handed a business card to Evelyn and said politely.
"Okay! Won't you come in and sit down?" Evelyn invited again.
"No. If you have no other instructions, I'll head back first!"
"It's fine. Be safe on your way back!"
"Okay, thank you, madam. Good night!"
"Good night!"
After Assistant Miller left, Evelyn closed the door and went back to the living room.
She couldn't help feeling that being Alexander's assistant wasn't easy. Having to buy things and deliver them in the middle of the night.
Especially for a girl, it wasn't safe to be out so late!
After entering the living room, Evelyn carried the paper bags into the bedroom, thinking she would finish her homework and then take a bath.
The next second, as she saw the bed in the bedroom, a problem suddenly occurred to her.
Where would she sleep tonight?
Was there a guest room?
Well, if not, she would have to sleep on the sofa in the living room.
The sofa was very comfortable to sit on, so lying down must be even more comfortable!
Evelyn comforted herself.
She came out of the bedroom, sat back on the sofa, and continued with her homework.
After finishing her homework and stretching, she suddenly remembered that she hadn't talked to Alexander about the phone call.
Just as she got up, the study door opened.
Evelyn's heart skipped a beat. She looked up and saw Alexander coming out of his study.
Alexander closed the study door and lifted his eyes to see Evelyn.
He frowned slightly.
What was that expression?
Seeing a ghost?
"Are you... done?" Evelyn stammered.
"Yes," Alexander came over, sat down on the sofa, and poured himself a glass of water.
"Um... someone called you just now!" Evelyn continued, hesitating for a long time.
Alexander raised his eyes and looked at Evelyn, waiting for her to continue.
"I think I said something wrong. Would you like to call back and explain?"
"Who called?" Alexander asked.
"A man. He hung up before I could ask his name."
"Maybe he had the wrong number," Alexander said, not too concerned.
"No, he called twice. I asked him if he was looking for you, and he said yes. Then I said something wrong!"
"What did you say wrong?"
"I didn't mean to! If you can't explain it clearly, I can help you explain it too!" Evelyn quickly declared first.
"What did you say?" Alexander frowned deeper.
Why was this girl always so nervous and jumpy?
"I just said I was Mrs. Sterling..." Evelyn hesitated for a long time.
"What's wrong with that?"
Evelyn was immediately stumped by Alexander's question.
How should she say it?
Should she ask directly, "Is that man your lover?"
If she asked directly, would he get angry?
"Will he misunderstand?" Evelyn didn't know how to answer, so she had to ask carefully again.
"What misunderstanding? Even the evidence department took it. You are Mrs. Sterling. What else would you be?" Alexander glanced at Evelyn and asked.
"Haha, it's good that there's no misunderstanding, it's good that there's no misunderstanding! Then I'll take a bath first!" Evelyn said with a dry laugh and quickly slipped into the bedroom.
After entering the bedroom, she thought, she hadn't told Alexander who called. Did he know who it was?
Oh, forget it. She didn't know either. Even if Alexander asked her, she couldn't answer.
By the way, she had just told Alexander that she hung up before she could ask the name.
So, relieved, she went into the bathroom to take a bath.
Alexander picked up the cordless phone on the coffee table and called back the number.
When the phone connected, Alexander asked faintly, "What's the matter?"
"What, I can't call you if there's nothing wrong?" Owen on the other end of the phone said with a smile.
"Yes, just don't look for me when I'm busy!" Alexander leaned back in his chair and answered calmly.
Owen was his childhood friend. He was born two months younger than him. They went to the same elementary school, middle school, and even studied abroad together. They were so inseparable that they were almost considered best friends!
"Who was that person who answered the phone at night? Confess from the facts!"
"Your sister-in-law."
"Sister-in-law, my foot! If you were married, I wouldn't know!" Owen scoffed, not believing it.
"We just got the license a few days ago," Alexander replied calmly.
The next second, he took the phone away from his ear because the person on the other end started screaming.
A dog can't change its habit of eating shit!
This was Alexander's constant evaluation of Owen.
The first time he said this was when Owen chased after the beautiful girl in the big class in kindergarten.
"Got the license? When? Why didn't I hear about it before?" Owen was still suspicious.
"The girl my mother likes! It was about time I made up my mind, that's all!" Alexander explained concisely.
"That's it, that's it!" Owen continued to cry in disbelief on the other end of the phone. "Are you marrying your daughter-in-law or your mother's daughter-in-law?"
They all had a good time. Almost all of them agreed that Alexander would be a bachelor for a thousand years.
Because his personality was not only critical but also extremely arrogant.
They didn't think any normal girl could stand him and marry him!
Unless she was a guy who wasn't afraid of death!
Of course, excluding those who simply liked his money and his handsome face.
"Is there any difference? The person I married is my mother's daughter-in-law!"
"I know, the girl your mother likes is just the type you like, right? Tell me honestly, what means did you use to catch her?" Owen said excitedly.
"Don't worry, I won't teach you the secret. Keep your bachelor record!"
"Damn it, Alexander, are we good brothers or not?" Owen exclaimed excitedly.
"No!" Alexander responded lightly.
Owen, on the other end of the phone, directly vomited blood. He gritted his teeth and said angrily, "Alexander, you are cruel!"
"I'm going to rest. If there's nothing in the future, don't call me so late!"
"Damn it, it's not even eleven o'clock Beijing time now, you workaholic, and you're telling me it's late! You're not more cruel, you just choose to call me when I'm sleeping!
Oh, I see. A moment is worth a thousand gold. Did I disturb you and your sister-in-law? I'm wrong. I'll pay attention to the call time next time.
Sister-in-law, isn't she beautiful?" From the beginning, Owen was filled with righteous indignation, and later, he began to gossip with a smile.
"It's okay!"
"Send me a picture!"
"No!"
"I'm not in your apartment? No, you won't take it right away!" Owen thought he was going to vomit blood.
"She doesn't like meeting strangers, especially ugly people! When you want to see her, you can wait for our wedding.
Nothing else, I'm hanging up!" Alexander finished, and without waiting for Owen's response, he directly hung up the phone.
Owen, on the other end of the phone, was going crazy!
After a while, he went even crazier because he just realized that Alexander was allergic to ugly monsters!
Sure enough, not long after, a text message came from Alexander's phone.
"Damn it, where am I ugly! Where am I ugly!"
Alexander ignored it directly.
He got up, locked the door, turned off the light, and went into the bedroom.
Evelyn had just come out of the bathroom, a bath towel wrapped around her waist like a cat.
The next second, she heard something and was startled. She turned her head and saw Alexander entering the bedroom.
She even forgot to scream. She remained in her original position, her face slowly turning red.
