"This is Alexander Sterling," the voice on the other end answered calmly.
"Oh, okay. After the party, I'll have Evie call you back!" Emily replied.
"Thank you for your help."
"You're welcome. Bye!" Emily finished speaking and lowered the phone to look at the screen.
Her mouth dropped open in shock.
The person who just called was a man. His voice sounded young. And the contact name on Evie's phone was "Husband."
When did Evie get a boyfriend?
And why did that name sound so familiar?
She felt like she had heard it somewhere before.
When did Evie start dating someone?
"Emily, how's your internship at Sterling Group going?" A classmate walked over to chat.
"Pretty good!" Emily smiled as she slipped the phone back into Evie's bag.
"The contract signing should be fine."
"I'm not sure yet. It's not that easy," Emily replied modestly.
"Isn't Evie interning there with you?" The classmate turned to look at Evie, who was passed out on the table.
"Yeah. She's in the secretarial office. It's a great position. How about you?"
"I'm planning to go back to my hometown. My family found me a job. It's not bad."
"Congratulations. You don't have to stay in the big city to succeed."
"Yeah, I think so too. Did Evie drink a lot? She's completely out of it."
"She can't hold her liquor. A few drinks and she's done for."
"She doesn't have to worry about work anyway. Her family is loaded," the classmate laughed.
"She wants to make it on her own."
"That's true. With her skills, she can find a job anywhere."
Everyone chatted happily through the night.
Near the end, Emily nudged Evie. "Evie, we're almost done. Do you want to call home and have someone pick you up? Or do you want to come back to the dorm with me?"
"I need to go home," Evie mumbled.
A few seconds later, she put her phone away. "Alexander is coming to get me."
Then she slumped back down and went to sleep.
Emily stared at Evie, completely confused.
The class monitor walked over. "Is Evie okay?"
"She's fine. Just too drunk. Her family is coming to pick her up."
"Good. She really can't drink. She got wasted after just a few glasses."
"Yeah," Emily nodded.
Stella came over too. "Is her family coming to get her?"
"She already called," Emily replied.
"Oh. She could have come back to the dorm with us," Stella said.
"Evie wants to go home. Her family is coming. We don't need to worry," Emily said with a smile. She picked up a glass of wine and turned to Stella. "I haven't had a drink with you yet! Stella, I wish you a great job with a high salary and no overtime on weekends!"
"Haha, thanks. I wish you a good husband soon!" Stella laughed.
"Get out of here!" Emily laughed back.
Stella laughed and clinked her glass with Emily's. They both drank.
When the party ended, everyone walked out of the private room.
The class monitor and the sports secretary stayed behind to settle the bill.
Emily and Stella waited with Evie for her ride.
"Who's coming to get Evie?" the sports secretary asked.
"Her family. They should be here soon. They called earlier," Emily said.
Just then, Evie's phone rang.
Emily shook her. "Evie, your phone is ringing."
Evie lifted her head, groggy. She fumbled in her bag and answered the call.
After a few seconds, she said, "I'm going back."
"Let's go. We'll walk you out," Emily said, holding Evie up.
Evie nodded, her eyes still half-closed.
All she wanted to do was lie down and sleep.
When they got downstairs, Alexander's car was already parked at the restaurant entrance.
Seeing them come out, Alexander got out of the car.
The moment Evie saw him, she smiled. She turned to her friends and said, "Alexander is here to pick me up. I'm going home. Bye!"
She stumbled toward him.
Before Emily could reach out to help, Alexander had already pulled Evie into his arms. He nodded at the group of classmates. "Thank you for looking after her."
"We're sorry for the trouble. Evie didn't drink much. We didn't expect her to get so drunk," the class monitor replied.
"She really can't handle alcohol. We'll head back now. Feel free to visit us sometime," Alexander said calmly.
"Okay. Bye!"
Alexander helped Evie into the passenger seat and buckled her seatbelt.
After closing the car door, he waved at the classmates. Then he walked around to the driver's seat and drove away.
"Wow! Who is that guy? He's so handsome!" Stella immediately grabbed Emily's arm, excited.
Emily's mouth was still hanging open.
"Am I seeing things?"
"What's wrong?" The three classmates turned to look at Emily.
"That looked like the boss of my company," Emily replied.
"Which company's boss?" Stella asked.
"The company I'm interning at. Sterling Group. Alexander Sterling. He's the president."
"Huh? How does Evie know him? Wait, are you sure it's him?" Stella asked.
"Call and ask! Did anyone get his license plate?" the sports secretary asked, shocked.
So someone called Emily. Someone else called the counselor to ask for Evie's home phone number.
They all stared at each other in disbelief.
Because after making those calls, they came to a shocking conclusion.
Alexander Sterling was Evie's husband.
"Wait... is Evie married?" someone finally asked.
Everyone was stunned.
"There's nothing we can do about it now. We'll have to wait until tomorrow to ask Evie," the class monitor said, trying to stay rational.
"Yeah, I guess so," Emily nodded.
The four of them headed back to school.
Stella and Emily returned to their dorm.
Because they had both had a bit too much to drink, they didn't go straight to bed. They sat at their desks to rest.
"Emily, did you know Evie was dating your boss?" Stella asked curiously.
"No. I had no idea. Evie never mentioned it," Emily shook her head.
"Don't you intern together? How could you not know?" Stella pressed.
