Chapter 18

He threw himself into his work. He never thought about his personal life. The more his mother looked at him, the more frustrated she became.

After his older brother’s sudden death, she focused everything on setting him up. Blind dates. Forced marriages.

Since his mother liked this girl so much, he had no objections. As long as she was filial to his mother and had no major flaws, he didn’t care. Sooner or later, he had to marry someone anyway.

He just never imagined it would happen like this. It was almost laughable.

Once Alexander agreed to this seemingly absurd marriage, Eleanor finally smiled. She looked like someone who had just won the lottery.

The next morning, she woke up early. She told the butler to decorate the house. She asked Chloe to help her change into a new outfit.

Today was the perfect day for her youngest son to register for marriage.

Yesterday, she had been worried. If he refused, she might have cried or even threatened him. But in the end, she would have let him do whatever he wanted.

She wanted to live in peace too!

She never expected him to agree so quickly. It caught her off guard.

It seemed her youngest son was still filial. That thought comforted her.

Meanwhile, Evelyn went back to school after dinner with Charlotte. She did what she needed to do.

The marriage was just a matter of waiting for the family to inform her. If the other party wasn’t in a hurry, neither was she. As long as they could help her family through this crisis, keep her father out of jail, and stop them from living on the streets, she was fine.

Two days later, Evelyn got a call from her mother. She was told to ask for leave tomorrow morning. She had to go to the Civil Affairs Bureau to register with Alexander.

Alexander was the man she was supposed to marry.

Finally, her mother asked her to come home in the evening. She needed to dress up properly in the morning before heading to the bureau.

Evelyn agreed. After hanging up, she realized she was about to become a married woman.

And the sad part? She didn’t even know what he looked like!

She tried to comfort herself. No matter how he looked, she only liked men.

That thought calmed her down.

“Em, what happens in the novels after the marriage?” Evelyn asked Emily, who was reading a book in their dorm.

Even though it was fiction, creation came from life. There had to be something she could learn from it.

“Depends on whether you’re reading a sweet story or a painful one,” Emily replied.

“What about sweet ones?” Evelyn asked.

“Sweet ones are like the book I’m reading now. The couple falls in love at first sight after marriage. Then they show off their love in every possible way, making single people jealous. By the end, the author runs out of ideas, so they just wrap it up with a happy ending,” Emily said with a grin.

“Oh. And painful ones?” Evelyn frowned.

“There are tons of those.”

Emily put on a wise expression and continued. “They usually follow a pattern. The man and woman hate each other. Then the man brings different women home to hurt the wife. Eventually, the wife’s heart breaks. She might leave with a baby, or leave without one. That’s when a warm, caring second male lead shows up. The man finally realizes what he lost and tries everything to win her back. In the end, they usually get back together and live happily ever after.”
