"What?" Alexander Sterling thought he misheard.
"Evelyn's family called. They said she agreed."
"Evelyn Vance. I had her investigated."
"She's a good girl. Gentle. Unimportant. Innocent."
"She's still a student at a top university."
"Graduating soon."
"She's exactly what I had in mind."
"You're crazy. You want to settle this with money." Alexander frowned.
Now he understood why Ethan Sterling ran off the second he saw him.
This was all his doing!
"What are you talking about! If she wanted money, she'd have to look up to you." Eleanor Sterling glared at her son. "Don't think you're so great just because you have some dirty money!"
"Mom, that's not what I meant. Marriage isn't a joke."
"I haven't even met her. It's too rushed for you to make us register!"
"I arranged for you to meet Evelyn last night."
"I didn't go..."
"Then you gave up your chance. Don't say I didn't arrange it."
"I've already made the appointment. Nine-thirty tomorrow morning at the Civil Affairs Bureau."
"If you want to show up and get the certificate, fine. If you want to make me angry, that's your choice too!" Eleanor laid down the ultimatum.
"Mom, you have to give me some time!" Alexander's head throbbed.
"How old are you!"
"Almost thirty. You think you're three years old!"
"I've been looking for someone for you since you were twenty."
"Well, in all these years, have you ever brought a girl home to show me!"
"Forget girlfriends. You haven't even brought a boyfriend!"
Alexander's jaw nearly dropped. When did his mother ever allow him to find a boyfriend!!
"Mom—"
"So don't tell me I didn't give you time or chances. These are the results of you not cherishing them!"
"Nothing to do with anyone else." Eleanor replied coldly.
Alexander looked at his mother, helpless.
Marriage was still on the table.
"Mom, give me that girl's number. I'll call her—"
"You don't need to call. I'll see you at the gate of the Civil Affairs Bureau at nine-thirty tomorrow." Eleanor cut him off.
"Mom—" Alexander was desperate.
"My blood pressure is acting up again. Chloe, come help me!" Eleanor interrupted him.
Chloe didn't dare delay. She rushed to help the old lady.
Alexander had no choice but to change his tune. "Mom, I'll get married. Let's go home!"
"That's more like it!" Eleanor suddenly perked up. Her blood pressure was fine. Her heart was normal again.
"Let me see what that girl looks like." Alexander said.
"Don't worry. She looks better than you!"
"Here's a picture. Take a look!" Eleanor pulled out a photo and handed it to her youngest son.
Alexander couldn't laugh or cry.
She was lending it to him!
Like he was a baby!
Alexander took the photo. The girl in it looked very young. He asked in disbelief,
"Mom, this little girl isn't even an adult yet!"
"Don't worry. She's twenty-one. She's an adult!" Eleanor replied proudly.
"When was this picture taken? She looks fifteen." Alexander stared at the photo again.
"She's just good-looking. Don't be so anxious." Eleanor complained.
"..." Alexander was speechless.
This was his mother. She spared no effort.
