Chapter 16

“Ah?” Evelyn stopped screaming and peered through her fingers.

“See? Pants!” Alexander pointed at the sign on the men’s restroom door.

Evelyn turned her head and spotted the men’s room sign. Her face flushed crimson. She clasped her hands together and muttered,

“I’m so sorry.”

Then she spun around, still red-faced, and fled the bathroom.

What a disaster. What a complete disaster.

Not only had she walked into the wrong restroom, but she’d also seen something she absolutely shouldn’t have. Would she get styes in her eyes now?

It was over.

This was her first meeting with Alexander Sterling.

Evelyn hadn’t even seen what Alexander looked like, but she’d already had a face-off with his… little brother.

Alexander hadn’t seen Evelyn’s face either, since she’d been covering it. He just thought the girl had a screw loose.

“Evelyn—”

Evelyn jolted as if electrocuted. She turned her head and saw Noah Grant walking toward her.

“Sorry, I forgot to check the box number earlier,” Evelyn explained awkwardly.

She was too embarrassed to admit she’d just barged into the wrong bathroom and seen something she shouldn’t have.

Now she was hiding here, wallowing in regret.

Noah looked at her and smiled. His thin lips parted as he said,

“You’re still as scatterbrained as ever. You haven’t changed a bit.”

That same day, Alexander had just stepped out of his office when he received a call from Eleanor Sterling.

“Mom, you’re looking for me?” Alexander asked gently.

“If I didn’t call, would you ever come home?” Eleanor’s voice was sharp on the other end of the line.

“Of course not. I just got off work and was planning to head back,” Alexander replied with a smile.

“Then come home quickly. I have something to discuss with you.”

“Mom, what is it?” Alexander rubbed his temples, already feeling a headache coming on.

“Just come back.”

“Alright,” Alexander had no choice but to agree.

He hung up, went downstairs, and drove away from the company.

His mother had already set him up on dozens of blind dates. He hadn’t been interested in any of the photos, let alone the actual meetings.

But his mother seemed to treat getting him married and having kids as her final mission.

This year, she’d even issued an ultimatum: if he didn’t get married, she would cut ties with him.

Eleanor had probably already heard that he’d turned down the last matchmaking attempt.

Now she was busy hunting for other candidates for him.

Just thinking about it gave him a headache.

Alexander drove back to Sterling Mansion.

The driver came to park his car. He got out, ducking slightly as he passed under the wisteria trellis.

He was nearly six-foot-three, and the trellis was only about six and a half feet high.

Some branches and vines hung almost right in front of his face.

Once inside, he saw his mother sitting in her usual spot in the living room.

She gave him a rare smile.

Alexander’s heart skipped a beat for no reason.

Shouldn’t she be furious right now?

Why did the old lady look so pleased?

“Good evening, Uncle Gray!” Ethan Sterling greeted Alexander, then gave his grandmother a clever look. “Grandma, I’m going upstairs to do my homework first.”

“Alright, come down for dinner later,” Eleanor replied kindly.

Alexander glanced at Ethan, wondering when the boy had become so conscientious.

“Mom,” Alexander called out as he sat down on the sofa.

“Get ready.

I’ve already prepared the lawyers.

Tomorrow, Evelyn will sign the prenuptial agreement, and you can register for marriage,” Eleanor explained.
