Chapter 99

Thinking Alexander would definitely contact his driver, the only thing she could do was call Grace Miller.

“I’m on leave these two days. Mr. Sterling hasn’t contacted me,” Grace said on the other end.

“I’m sorry. I know you’re off, but I still bothered you,” Evie apologized.

“It’s fine. Did Mr. Sterling forget his phone?”

“Maybe. It’s okay. He’ll call back when he sees the missed calls. Enjoy your break. I won’t disturb you.”

“Alright. Congratulations on your marriage to Mr. Sterling. I wish you a son soon!”

“Thank you,” Evie replied, forcing a smile.

A son soon? That was impossible.

Alexander was rumored to be gay. How could she have a child unless she cheated?

She got nothing useful from Grace. There was still no news from Ethan either. Evie grew worried.

She decided to check the apartment. Maybe Alexander had gone back there to rest.

She changed clothes, grabbed her small bag, told her mother, and headed out.

“Evie, where are you going? The wedding is tomorrow. Don’t run around,” Amelia said.

“Mom, I’ll be out for a bit. I’ll be back soon,” Evie replied while putting on her shoes.

She waved at her mother and left.

At Alexander’s apartment, he wasn’t there.

Evie felt a little down. It was normal for him not to be there, right?

Ethan couldn’t reach Alexander’s cell. He would think of the company and the apartment. He would naturally call the landline.

Since no one was found, it only meant Alexander wasn’t there.

Coming here was completely unnecessary.

Evie sighed, lowered her head, walked out of the apartment, locked the door, and left.

She took out her phone and called Alexander again.

It rang, but no one answered.

Evie didn’t know if he didn’t have his phone or just couldn’t answer.

Right now, aside from feeling uneasy, she didn’t know what to do.

Her mother called again, telling her to come home. There were still things to discuss. William had promised. Evie hung up and walked toward the bus stop.

She got on the bus home and sat by the window. She leaned her head against the glass, lost in thought.

The bus stopped at a red light. Evie turned to look outside.

When she looked back, she froze. She turned her head sharply. Across the street, in front of a western restaurant, she saw a familiar figure. Alexander!

Evie stood up from her seat.

She rushed to the door, but couldn’t get off. The bus hadn’t reached the stop yet. She could only wait anxiously.

The bus passed the intersection and stopped at the next platform.

Evie got off and ran straight back.

From a distance, she saw Alexander get into a car. Owen Clarke got in with him.

The car drove away from the restaurant and disappeared from sight.

Evie stopped, panting. Her heart felt like it would jump out of her throat.

After a moment, she had to go back. She thought her behavior was ridiculous.

It was good to see Alexander was fine. Why did she get off the bus and run over?

Her phone rang. Evie quickened her pace toward the platform, thinking it must be her mother again.

She took the phone from her bag and answered without looking. “I’m on my way. I’m almost home!”

There was a moment of silence. Then the person on the other end asked, “Where are you?”

Evie was stunned for a long time. Then she realized it was Alexander’s voice. She looked at the phone. It was his call.

“I… I’m outside. I’m heading back.”

“What’s the matter? I left my phone in the car to charge and forgot to take it,” Alexander explained.

“Nothing. It’s just that Ethan was looking for you,” Evie replied.

She couldn’t say she was worried about him and ran out to find him. Only to see him with his… well, with Owen.

“I see. Where are you? I’ll send someone to pick you up.”

“No, no. I’m almost home,” Evie said, looking up at the platform ahead.

“Alright. Take care. See you tomorrow.”

“See you tomorrow,” Evie answered.

She was about to hang up when she heard Owen’s voice on the other end. “It’s really enviable…”

Then there was silence. Alexander hung up.

Evie held her phone, her mind blank. Her heart felt blocked.

She suddenly understood why she had rushed off the bus so hastily.

It turned out that seeing Alexander and Owen together made her feel uncomfortable subconsciously.

Evie looked up at the sky, forced a smile, and comforted herself.

They were a couple, weren’t they?

When Evie got home, her mother called her over and told her things to pay attention to at tomorrow’s wedding.

She also told her to rest early tonight. Tomorrow would be a busy day. She would be very tired.

Evie didn’t really listen to her mother’s explanations. But her mother patiently repeated them again and again.

She was so busy that after dinner, her mother told her to go upstairs and rest.

Evie didn’t refuse. She obediently went upstairs.

Her mother was still busy. Several relatives were at home. She needed to entertain them.

After a long bath, Evie walked out of the bathroom. She saw her sister Victoria sitting at her desk, looking at her textbook.

“Sister,” Evie called.

“You’re getting married tomorrow,” Victoria said, looking up at her.

“I’ve been married for a while now, haven’t I?” Evie said with a smile while drying her hair.

“Yes, legally, you’re Mrs. Sterling. Tomorrow is just a make-up wedding. But according to common customs, tomorrow is the day you truly leave home. At the wedding ceremony, people will really acknowledge you as Mrs. Sterling,” Victoria said, resting her chin on her hand.

“It doesn’t matter if others don’t acknowledge it,” Evie replied with a smile.

Anyway, she and Alexander were just a couple in name. She didn’t care about worldly views.

“Well, you’re Mrs. Sterling now. You were married off by the family. Even though they sold you for ten million at the beginning… you married Alexander. But anyway, as long as you’re married, you’re Mrs. Sterling. When you go to take care of his family, you can’t be so weak at home. You’ll be bullied. At home, I can help you. I can’t do anything for you at his place,” Victoria explained.

“Sister, why do you make it sound like I’m walking into a den of wolves?” Evie said, half laughing, half crying.

Besides, at home, only her sister would bully her.

Her father was too busy to take care of her. Her mother was too busy to take care of her.

It was Victoria who took care of her the most. And of course, she was also the one who bullied her the most.

But Evie knew her sister was only angry because she was too stupid.

“Haven’t you heard the saying? A rich family is as deep as the sea. Besides, the Sterling family is more complicated than ours. Anyway, you must listen to me. Don’t be a pushover. Do you hear me?” Victoria threatened.

“I know,” Evie nodded with a smile. But her heart felt sour and astringent. She was reluctant to get married, to leave this family, to leave her parents and sister.
