“That’s excellent,” Alexander said.
“I’ll take care of it.” Grace Miller noted it down and would handle the details later.
“You just got back from your trip, right? Get some rest early. Take care of yourself,” Evelyn said, feeling a bit awkward.
After hanging up, she couldn’t help wondering why Alexander insisted on a honeymoon.
She didn’t want to go anywhere. She felt sorry for him.
Maybe he really wanted to take someone else on a honeymoon. He just had to bring her along to keep up appearances.
After the call, Evelyn sat at her desk, lost in thought.
If she really got married, she’d be a real married woman from now on.
Well, it wasn’t exactly real. But she’d still be a married woman.
Sigh. Before she even graduated from university, she was marrying someone else. It wasn’t that she couldn’t understand it. It was just that the world was changing too fast.
A knock on the door made her turn around. She saw her mother. “Mom—”
“Are you busy?” Amelia Vance rarely spoke to Evelyn so politely.
“No, Mom. Come in and sit down.” Evelyn got up and walked over, taking her mother’s hand.
“I don’t have anything special to do. I just wanted to talk to you.”
“Okay, Mom. Sit down.” Evelyn walked to the bed and sat down.
Amelia’s mood was complicated and uneasy. She had been neglecting her youngest daughter.
After all, Evelyn had always been so good. She had been conscientious about her studies since she was a child. She never needed any worry at all.
Gradually, Amelia sometimes even forgot she still had this youngest daughter.
In the blink of an eye, her little girl was getting married. Time flew by so fast. She hadn’t had time to accompany her daughter through her growth.
“Evelyn, once you’re married, you’ll be an adult,” Amelia said, looking at her with emotion.
Evelyn blushed and nodded.
“Is Alexander good to you?”
“Very good.” Evelyn smiled and nodded.
Alexander was truly very kind to her. She had always been happy about that.
“That’s good. That’s good.” Amelia said those two words in a row, as if she was talking to Evelyn, or to herself.
After a moment, she couldn’t hold back her emotions anymore. She hugged Evelyn and cried, apologizing, “Evelyn, it’s Mom and Dad who are at fault!”
Evelyn was flustered by her mother’s outburst. While comforting her, she asked, “Mom, what’s wrong with you?”
“If it weren’t for your father, you wouldn’t have to marry like this. You could have dated Alexander for a while. It should have been your decision!” Amelia said, choking up.
“Mom, I thought something terrible had happened! Alexander is wonderful. Marrying him is a good thing for me!” Evelyn finally felt relieved.
Her mother’s sudden outburst had really scared her to death.
The last time Mom lost two million in gambling was terrifying enough.
“Do you really think so?” Amelia looked up at Evelyn and asked.
“Yes. Alexander is truly wonderful!” Evelyn said with a smile.
“Oh, then your father and I can rest easy.” Amelia immediately stopped crying, as if her tears were from a faucet. When it was turned off, it stopped. “Evelyn, let me tell you, marrying Alexander is a blessing for you! Think about how many people would break their heads to get this chance. Forget marrying him, it’s not even easy to meet him, blah blah blah…”
After several minutes, Amelia finally stopped.
Evelyn looked at her mother and said, “Mom, I know. I’m very lucky. I’m very happy to marry Alexander. So you and Dad don’t have to worry about me!”
“If you’re happy, your father and I can rest assured.” Amelia nodded.
Finally, Amelia left Evelyn’s bedroom, feeling at ease.
Evelyn thought about what her mother had just said. She couldn’t help but laugh and shake her head.
In the end, her parents still minded that she was marrying Alexander this way. They always felt sorry for her.
She was much calmer now than she had been at first.
After all, Alexander had nothing to be picky about, except for the rumors about him. On the contrary, she was the one who had married up.
Oh, right. There was one more thing that made Evelyn a little overwhelmed. That was Alexander’s occasional change in demeanor. He didn’t show his affection in front of outsiders. It was like he was a different person.
Evelyn thought about it and still couldn’t help but laugh.
Besides those things, Alexander was truly wonderful.
In the days before the wedding, Evelyn stayed at home almost the entire time.
Guests came and went in an endless stream. Relatives and friends visited from time to time.
Besides entertaining guests, Evelyn confirmed the wedding details. Other than that, she stayed in her bedroom reading a book or chatting with Emily Hart.
Emily’s favorite topics these days were Evelyn and Ethan Sterling. No matter what Evelyn said, that she and Ethan were not lovers at all, Emily was determined not to listen and didn’t believe it.
Evelyn finally had to say—
If I were really a couple with him, it would be the end of the world!
Unexpectedly, Emily replied to her—
The end of the world is long past. December 12, 2012, remember?
Evelyn suddenly felt like she couldn’t communicate with Emily at all. She had to let her imagination run wild.
After listening to Emily’s gossip, Stella Moore became very curious about Ethan. She wanted to take another train from her hometown and come back to see how handsome Ethan really was.
Later, Evelyn went downstairs and came back to find hundreds of conversations in their dormitory group. She was defeated by Emily and Stella.
Evelyn replied—
Just came downstairs!
Then Emily sent—
Evelyn, what have you been busy with lately? You seem busier than when you were in class.
Evelyn didn’t know how to reply to Emily for a moment. She couldn’t tell her she was busy preparing to get married.
In two days, she would marry Alexander.
If this were true, she wasn’t curious at all. Emily and Stella would kill her from their hometown and hand her over to the authorities on the spot.
Because she hadn’t told them about her marriage.
They had once agreed that whoever got married first would be the other’s bridesmaid.
But now she hadn’t asked them to be bridesmaids, and she was hiding the fact that she was getting married soon.
So if they found out, it was no surprise they would accuse and pursue her.
The afternoon before the wedding, Evelyn received a call from Ethan Sterling. He asked if his uncle was with her.
Evelyn was puzzled. “No, we haven’t seen each other these days. What’s wrong?”
“Nothing serious. Grandma wants to find my uncle, but no one answers the phone. I wondered if he was with you,” Ethan replied.
“He didn’t come here. Did you try contacting the company?”
“He wasn’t at the company. He went out in the afternoon. It’s okay. I’ll call again and ask.”
“Okay. I’ll ask here too. If I hear anything, I’ll contact you.”
“Okay.” Ethan answered and hung up.
Evelyn called Alexander, but no one answered.
