“Huh? What kind of relationship is that?” Stella asked, confused. The next second, Emily pulled her sleeve and pointed ahead.
Evelyn was so embarrassed she couldn’t answer Stella’s question. Her ears were burning red, like they might bleed.
But by then, they had already walked over. Alexander deliberately stopped in front of Evelyn. He lowered his head and explained, “Assistant Miller is nearby. I’ll have her take you back to school later.”
“Oh, thank you!” Evelyn replied with a silly smile. Inside, her heart was thundering. A storm was raging.
Alexander must have done that on purpose! This was terrible. Just terrible!
“Alexander, is she your sister?” the beautiful woman beside him asked curiously.
“No. She’s a classmate of my cousin’s friend,” Alexander replied, glancing at Evelyn.
“Hello, Brother Alexander! Hello, everyone!” Evelyn forced herself to greet them. She kept thinking about what she had just said to Emily and Stella. Alexander must have heard every word.
“Hello!” the beauty said with a smile.
“Thank you, Brother Alexander!” Evelyn continued.
“You’re welcome. We’ll be going now.”
“Okay, Brother Alexander, take care. Miss, take care. Everyone, take care!” Evelyn said, smiling like a waitress.
After they left, Emily immediately put her arm around Evelyn’s shoulder. “Evelyn, when did you meet such a handsome guy?”
“Not long ago. I went to a party with some elementary school kids,” Evelyn explained awkwardly.
“No wonder you turned down Jackson from the business department!” Stella sighed. Evelyn broke out in a cold sweat.
What did that have to do with anything?
“Evelyn, what does your Brother Alexander do?” Emily asked.
“His family runs a company,” Evelyn replied. The Sterling family probably owned it, right?
“Is he married?” Emily pressed on.
“...Yes.” And his wife was her!
“Alas, it’s over. I was going to say you could work harder, but it’s no use. There’s no hope,” Emily patted Evelyn’s shoulder to comfort her.
The three of them went downstairs and walked out of the restaurant. Assistant Miller’s car had just arrived.
She got out and was about to greet Evelyn. Evelyn quickly stepped forward and said, “Assistant Miller, please!” As she spoke, she kept winking.
She was terrified Assistant Miller would say something like— Hello, Mrs. Sterling! If she did, Evelyn would faint on the spot.
Assistant Miller saw Evelyn’s expression and almost laughed. “You’re welcome, Evelyn.”
Evelyn breathed a sigh of relief. She took Assistant Miller’s hand and introduced her, “These are my classmates, Emily and Stella! Emily, Stella, this is Assistant Miller. She’s an all-around beautiful assistant!”
“Hello, Assistant Miller!” Emily and Stella said in unison.
“Hello. I’m flattered. Get in the car. I’ll take you back to school,” Assistant Miller replied with a smile.
Once they were in the car, everyone chatted warmly with Assistant Miller. “Assistant Miller, how many years have you been working?” “Is it hard being an assistant? Would it be suitable for us to find an assistant job after graduation?” “Are there any professional requirements?” ...
They had a ton of questions, like a hundred thousand whys.
“I think we’d need a few more years to do your job. You can do everything now. We just graduated, and we can’t do anything,” Evelyn said. She thought being Alexander’s assistant was very demanding. Even being a life assistant was tough.
Like Assistant Miller, she had to know everything and do everything. She was like a generalist, always on call. Just like now, she had to come to the restaurant to pick them up. It wasn’t a job just anyone could do well.
“Evelyn is right. We just graduated and can’t do anything,” Stella muttered.
“I started from the most basic level too. My first job was a clerk. It was basically like doing chores. You have to see more, learn more, and do more. Then you’ll get better and better,” Assistant Miller replied with a smile.
“After graduation, it’s better for us to look for jobs from the ground up.” “What’s your major?” “Finance.” “You can apply for an internship at our group company. The company recruits a batch of employees every year. You can keep an eye on it.” “Sister Miller, which company do you work for?” “Sterling Group.” “Sterling! It’s so hard to get in!” Stella sighed.
Sterling Group was the dream company for all finance students. The ones who got in were basically the cream of the crop. And many times, starting from the bottom was even harder.
“Give it a try. Maybe you’ll get in,” Assistant Miller said, smiling at Evelyn through the rearview mirror.
Evelyn was embarrassed for a long time. She really didn’t want to intern at Sterling Group. It was totally unprofessional.
But that would mean working under Alexander! She’d rather run as far away as possible!
On Evelyn’s first day at work, Alexander had told her, “If the salary is right, you can keep doing it. If it’s not, you’d better go home and stay idle.”
“Five thousand! My sister’s salary isn’t even five thousand now!” Evelyn had exclaimed in surprise. “Is it that low?”
“No, but I should be practical. Besides, I’m still an intern. Intern salaries are even lower.”
“Sterling doesn’t have low salaries. Only incompetent people,” Alexander had replied. “Do you know how much my salary is?” Evelyn had asked, looking at him. “I don’t know.” “Aren’t you the boss of Sterling?” she had asked in dismay. “If the boss is in charge of all the interns’ salaries, he wouldn’t have time to do business.”
Evelyn had felt that Alexander’s words made sense, so she nodded.
When she reported to the personnel department, she first asked about her salary. “Four thousand,” the person in charge had replied with a smile. “Can I get two hundred more?” Evelyn had blurted out.
The person in charge had laughed immediately. “Once the salary is set, it can’t be changed! However, we have a three-hundred lunch allowance every month. That adds up to more than five thousand!”
After returning to the dormitory, the theme of the evening lie-down meeting was inseparable from Sterling Group and Alexander. Evelyn was embarrassed and didn’t want to talk about it. Every time she tried to change the subject, they pulled it back.
“Evelyn, it’s a pity your Brother Alexander is married. Otherwise, you could stage a love story between a domineering CEO and a Toby girl!” “Why am I a Toby girl?” Evelyn blurted out. “Don’t you want to be an elite, strong woman who counterattacks the overbearing president?” Emily rolled her eyes. “I can strive to be a white-collar beauty!” “Fight for a few more years, but it won’t work anyway. Your Brother Alexander is married!” Evelyn immediately broke out in a cold sweat. That was like saying nothing at all.
