Then Evelyn started hoping for a one percent chance of error. She rushed to the hospital for a blood test. The results were unsurprisingly the same. She was really pregnant.
Evelyn walked out of the outpatient building dejectedly. She heard someone call her name. She looked up and saw Alexander hurrying over.
Evelyn was stunned for a long moment before asking, “Alexander, why are you here?”
“What’s wrong with you? Are you sick?” Alexander grabbed her arm. He looked her up and down with concern.
“I’m not sick!” Evelyn replied, a little confused. Aside from the nausea and vomiting, she felt fine.
“Then why are you at the hospital?” Alexander stared at her intently.
“How did you know I was at the hospital?” Evelyn asked, puzzled.
“I called home. Yulan said you went to the hospital. You weren’t answering your phone.” Alexander explained.
“Oh, I forgot my phone. Let’s go home first. We can talk there.” Evelyn finished speaking and pulled Alexander to leave.
She was afraid to tell him the truth right there. If he fainted in public, it would be so embarrassing.
“What’s going on?” Alexander asked.
“I’m not sick. I’m fine. Don’t worry.” Evelyn turned to look at him.
“Oh, you came to see a patient?” Alexander felt relieved.
“Did you drive yourself?” Evelyn asked, changing the subject.
“Yes.” Alexander nodded.
“You’d better come back with me. Let the driver take your car.” Evelyn pulled him toward her car.
Alexander looked confused. “Where did I park my car?”
Evelyn rolled her eyes.
Later, they found out Alexander had parked his car right outside the hospital entrance. He hadn’t even taken the keys out. His car got a ticket and was towed away.
Well, now he really had to go back with Evelyn. No more driving for him.
After they got home, Evelyn pulled Alexander straight upstairs. Alexander’s heart started pounding again.
“Do you have something important to tell me?” He asked.
“Yes.” Evelyn nodded.
Alexander’s eyes widened. His breathing became shallow.
“It’s not what you think. I’m just pregnant again.” Evelyn said, a little annoyed.
Alexander was stunned for a moment. Then he asked, “You’re pregnant again?”
“Yes.” Evelyn looked at him, feeling a bit down.
The next second, Alexander fainted.
Evelyn gasped in surprise. “Alexander! Alexander!”
Later, this became a running joke. Everyone said Alexander fainted when he heard his wife was pregnant again.
At first, Alexander tried to explain. But later, he just gave up. Anyway, everyone was happy.
The truth was, Alexander felt relieved when he heard Evelyn was pregnant. He had been terrified she had some incurable disease. Then he realized she would have to go through another pregnancy. He got nervous all over again.
The shock of relief and then anxiety was too much for his heart. He just passed out.
Alexander worried for the next nine months. Finally, Evelyn gave birth to their third child. It was a daughter.
This time, Alexander insisted on getting a vasectomy. Even if the chance of pregnancy was only one in a thousand, with their luck, they would win that lottery again. So he got it done, once and for all.
After their daughter was born, the two boys became an afterthought. Alexander always held his daughter. He never wanted to let her go.
Sometimes Evelyn wanted to nurse the baby. Alexander was reluctant to hand her over. Sometimes Evelyn would lose her temper. Then Alexander would reluctantly give the baby to her.
After the daughter was born, Alexander started taking his eldest and youngest sons to work.
Why? To teach them business early, of course. So he could retire early.
One was in second grade. The other was just in kindergarten. Was it too early?
It didn’t matter. They could cultivate good thinking habits and an indomitable spirit of hard work. That was Alexander’s best excuse as a father.
Evan and Oliver, the two boys, had such a funny father. But somehow, they didn’t grow up with split personalities.
“Dad, my sister is so cute!” Evan said, teasing his baby sister.
“She’s cuter than you.” Alexander nodded and smiled.
He held his daughter proudly. Look, I have such a lovely daughter. Do you?
“Dad, is Mom cuter, or is my sister cuter?” Evan looked up at his father innocently.
“Of course, Mom is more beautiful. Your sister is more lovely.” Alexander glanced at his eldest son.
Damn, he was so young and already trying to set me up.
“Dad, I want to hold my sister!” Evan reached out his hands.
“Sure. Did you finish your homework today?” Alexander asked.
“Yes!” Evan replied with a smile.
“Piano, painting, recitation, and all the company information I gave you yesterday?”
“All done!” Evan nodded proudly.
“Oh, then go help your mother cook.” Alexander finally said.
“Mom is taking a nap.” Evan replied.
“Oh, then you should take a nap too.”
“I want to hold my sister!”
“If you take a nap, I’ll let you hold her.” Alexander compromised.
He thought, his eldest son was still too busy to remember what he wanted.
Evan, who still didn’t know his father’s cunning side, agreed to take a nap. After he woke up, he forgot all about holding his sister.
After a good afternoon nap, Evelyn came out of the bedroom. She heard the conversation between father and son. She shook her head silently and walked over.
“Is it fun bullying your son all day?” She asked.
“How is it fun?” Alexander laughed. The next second, he realized his wife was talking to him. He quickly changed his tune. “I wasn’t bullying your son!”
Evelyn gave him a look. “My son isn’t your son?”
“I’m all yours. Of course, my son is yours.” Alexander replied with a smile.
She hadn’t seen this side of him in a while.
Looking at their sleeping daughter, she said, “Don’t hold her all the time. If she’s asleep, just put her in the crib.”
“Let me hold her a little longer.”
“Put her to bed, or you’ll sleep on the sofa tonight. You choose.” Evelyn finished and went downstairs.
Alexander chose to put his daughter in the nursery crib without any principles. He still wanted to hold her longer. But compared to the torture of sleeping on the sofa, he had to give up.
Then he told the nanny to watch the baby carefully. The nanny smiled and nodded. She was clearly used to the young master’s nervousness about his daughter.
Alexander left the nursery and went downstairs to find his wife. Evelyn wasn’t downstairs. The maid said the young lady had just gone out.
Alexander followed her out of Sterling Manor. He saw Evelyn standing in front of the lotus pond. Her skirt swayed slightly. She looked like a spirit who had just transformed from the lotus pond.
“Evelyn.” Alexander walked over and called her name.
Evelyn turned her head and gave him a gentle smile. Alexander’s heart melted.
He put his arm around her shoulder. They stood side by side in front of the lotus pond. They enjoyed the emerald green lotus leaves and the carp swimming in the water. He felt that life was complete.
The sun was shining. The years were quiet.
