For almost two weeks, Alexander Sterling hadn't come to Richmond Villa.
Even William Vance, who usually didn't pay much attention to things, took the initiative to ask.
"What's Alexander been up to lately? I haven't seen him around!"
"I don't know," Evelyn replied awkwardly.
She really didn't know.
Although Alexander still called her every day and watched the baby through video, he never came to the villa.
Sometimes she wanted to ask how he was doing, but then she remembered they were about to get divorced, and she couldn't bring herself to say anything.
"No matter how close you are to divorce, he's still your husband, the baby's father. You should care a little more," William sighed.
"Dad, I know," Evelyn answered.
After returning upstairs, Evelyn still called Lily Thompson first.
"Lily—"
"Mrs. Sterling! Mrs. Sterling, when are you coming back? I miss you so much!" Lily said excitedly on the other end of the phone.
"I'm a bit busy right now."
"I heard you and Mr. Sterling are getting divorced. Is that true?"
"Yes," Evelyn answered quietly.
"Why? You and Mr. Sterling are so well matched and have such a good relationship. Why do you want a divorce?"
"There are many reasons. I can't explain them in just a few words.
How is Mr. Sterling doing?" Evelyn hesitated for a long time before asking.
"Mrs. Sterling, I don't know if I should tell you the truth."
"What's wrong?" Evelyn's heart tightened.
"Mr. Sterling caught a bad cold when he came back from his last business trip. He's been running a fever on and off, and he's still not well.
He told me not to let you know.
I've wanted to call you, but I didn't dare," Lily said, her voice choked.
"Is Alexander at the company or at home now?"
"Mr. Sterling insisted on going to work this morning! Mrs. Sterling, would you like to go see him and persuade him?" Lily asked.
"I'll handle it," Evelyn said.
After talking to Lily on the phone, Evelyn called Alexander's personal doctor to learn about his condition.
Then she changed her clothes and went downstairs with her bag, ready to go to Sterling Group.
"Mom, please take care of the baby for me. I'm going to the company," Evelyn said to her mother.
"What are you going to the company for?" Amelia asked, puzzled.
"I'm going to Sterling Group to see Alexander. He hasn't been feeling well lately," Evelyn explained.
"What's wrong?" Amelia asked anxiously.
"He caught a bad cold. He still has a fever. I'm going to see him."
"Then go quickly. Don't worry about the baby. I'll take care of him with your sister-in-law."
"Okay," Evelyn nodded, went to see her baby, and then left.
She hadn't been to Sterling Group in a long time. After getting out of the car, Evelyn walked into the lobby, feeling a little strange.
"Good morning, Mrs. Sterling!"
Evelyn froze for a moment and looked up to see the two front desk receptionists smiling at her.
"Good morning," Evelyn replied awkwardly. "I'm here to see Alexander."
"This way, Mrs. Sterling," the front desk gestured toward the elevator.
Evelyn nodded and walked in the direction of the elevator.
Before she resigned, she used to meet them at work, and sometimes they would chat and gossip.
But since she resigned, she had rarely come to the company.
On one hand, it was because she was pregnant. On the other hand, it was because of her relationship with Alexander, which made her feel uncomfortable.
Evelyn went upstairs and walked toward Alexander's office. She passed the secretary's office first.
"Evelyn!" Chloe Parker saw Evelyn and was stunned for a moment before calling out in surprise.
"Hello, Chloe," Evelyn greeted.
"Good morning, Mrs. Sterling!" Chloe replied with a smile.
"Evelyn is here!" The other secretaries looked up and saw Evelyn, greeting her one after another.
"I have something to do. I'm here to see Alexander," Evelyn explained.
"Mr. Sterling is in his office."
"You're busy. I won't disturb you. We'll chat another day," Evelyn smiled and nodded.
"Okay."
Evelyn left the secretary's room and went to Alexander's office.
"Evelyn looks even better after giving birth," Chloe said in a low voice.
"I think she's more beautiful and elegant too."
"Is that the legendary wife of the chairman?"
"Yes, yes, you haven't seen her before. She's pretty and young."
"I've only heard of her. Today is the first time I've seen her. She's really young and beautiful."
"She used to be in our secretary's office! Let me tell you, work hard in the secretary's office, and you'll have a bright future!"
In the secretary's room, they kept their voices down, gossiping among themselves.
Evelyn went to Alexander's office and knocked on the door.
There was no response.
Evelyn gently pushed the door open and heard a violent cough inside.
It sounded like he was coughing his lungs out.
"Come in," Alexander said after stopping his cough.
Evelyn went in.
Alexander was stunned when he saw Evelyn. After a moment, he came back to his senses and asked.
"Why are you here?"
"I came to see you," Evelyn stared at Alexander and answered.
"Sit down," Alexander said, avoiding Evelyn's gaze awkwardly. Then he put on a mask and got up to come over.
After Alexander approached, Evelyn almost reflexively reached out and touched his forehead. It was a bit frightening.
"You still have a fever, and you insisted on going to work," Evelyn said angrily.
"I'll take care of it. I'll go back later."
"Don't lie to me! You didn't take it seriously. You didn't see a doctor!"
Alexander looked at Evelyn and didn't speak.
Evelyn pursed her lips and continued after a while.
"Even if we get divorced, I will still care about you.
I don't want you to ruin your health for work.
Without your health, what's the point of earning so much money?"
"Evelyn, I don't care about my health.
I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to know and worry.
I didn't come to see the baby during this time because I was afraid of infecting him," Alexander explained.
"That's why I insisted on divorce.
Because you're too self-righteous. You always think from your own perspective about what's best for me and the baby.
You never consider my feelings. You never think about whether it's what I really need.
You're always so subjective and self-confident. On the surface, it seems like you've given a lot, but in reality, it's not what the baby and I want at all.
Did you hear me? It's not what the baby and I want and need!" Evelyn yelled, losing control.
"I'm sorry," Alexander hugged Evelyn and apologized.
"I don't want to hear that again. You've said it many times!" Evelyn shook her head, her voice choked.
