Chapter 402

Evelyn ate the pastries Alexander had bought.

They were sweet and delicious. She had craved them for a long time, but they hadn't been easy to get.

After a few bites, though, the taste no longer seemed special.

People were often like that. The harder something was to obtain, the more they wanted it.

When the day of satisfaction finally came, they might realize it was nothing much.

But before that, they could never be content.

Evelyn glanced at Alexander. He was quietly staring at her.

For once, she didn't look away. She met his gaze.

As a husband, he seemed flawless. He was good to her. He gave her a luxurious life. As long as she was willing, she could do whatever she wanted. She never had to worry about money.

This life seemed perfect. If she complained, she would be ungrateful.

But she still wanted to escape.

Even if she just closed one eye, her life would be beautiful and enviable.

She couldn't stand the anxiety, the restlessness with nowhere to go, the suspicion that something would go wrong at any second.

Forbearance wasn't a virtue. It was just temporary restraint. When it built up enough, it would explode like atomic energy.

She didn't want to become a bitter couple with Alexander one day.

Alexander wasn't her. He couldn't understand her feelings, just as she couldn't understand his thoughts.

Because she loved him, she cared. The more she cared, the more she wanted all of him. She couldn't stand even spiritual infidelity.

Many people didn't think spiritual infidelity was cheating. For her, it was just as unacceptable as physical cheating.

She couldn't accept being put in such an awkward position.

Put yourself in her shoes. One day, when you were sleeping next to the person closest to you, they were thinking about someone else. That person seemed to be between you, impossible to overcome. And you seemed to be the obstacle between them. That was the worst part.

Logically, she knew Alexander wouldn't actually do anything to apologize to her. But that didn't mean she had to accept his lack of emotional commitment.

So the problem between them had nothing to do with anyone else from the start. It was just between them. Alexander couldn't really let go of the past, and she couldn't stand him like that. So they were doomed.

Evelyn lowered her eyes. Most of the time, she just had to endure it for a while. But why should she endure it? Because of Alexander? Or was this the only way they could stay together?

But if Alexander loved her, how could he bear to put her in such an embarrassing position?

Alexander came over and took her hand.

"Evelyn, don't think too much. Let's take it slow."

Evelyn looked up and gave a faint smile. She didn't say anything. She picked up her spoon and continued eating her dessert.

She wanted to lie to herself and say she wasn't thinking about anything. But in the end, she couldn't.

The baby finally didn't have to stay in the incubator anymore.

When Evelyn held the baby, something settled in her heart. She felt like she was no longer drifting. She felt stable.

She looked down at the baby in her arms. He was asleep, but the corners of his mouth were slightly pouted, just like Alexander's habit. It was very cute.

Evelyn wanted to kiss him, but she was afraid of waking him up. She had also heard that you shouldn't kiss babies often, that it wasn't good for them. So she held back.

"His eyes are like yours."

Alexander's voice came from beside her.

Evelyn turned her head, looked at Alexander, and nodded with a smile.

"He's cute."

"Just like you," Alexander replied with a smile.

Evelyn smiled for a moment, then avoided Alexander's gaze and continued looking at the baby, as if she couldn't get enough of him.

In the afternoon, the baby went home first. The postpartum caregiver would take care of him.

On one hand, it wasn't good for the baby to stay in the hospital because there were a lot of germs. On the other hand, they were afraid it would affect Evelyn's rest.

After all, a newborn's schedule was different from an adult's. When he was hungry, or when his diaper was wet, or when he was unhappy, he could only express himself by crying.

So Mrs. Sterling let the caregiver take the baby home first.

Although Evelyn was reluctant, she didn't object. Her mother-in-law was only thinking about the baby's well-being.

Fortunately, Evelyn recovered well after the surgery. A few days later, she was finally discharged.

Because she couldn't wait to see her baby, Evelyn left the hospital the night before and went home to take care of her family. The next day, she asked someone to come and handle the discharge procedures.

After living in the hospital for a while, Evelyn felt a little strange when she first got home.

It might have something to do with the change in weather. The scenery at home had also changed, so Evelyn felt a little different.

The young lady had returned to Sterling Manor. Lily was very happy. She was busy cooking dinner for the young lady. She came out to look from time to time, as if to confirm that the excitement wasn't her imagination.

Evelyn was holding the baby and feeding him. Because she hadn't done it before, she looked a bit clumsy, but she was studying hard.

When the baby was full, he smiled at Evelyn. Evelyn got excited and looked up.

"Baby, you're smiling at me!"

The next second, she met Alexander's gaze. Alexander replied with a smile.

"The baby likes you."

"Isn't that obvious? I gave birth to him!" Evelyn answered proudly. Because she was in a good mood, she ignored everything else.

When the baby was full, he wanted to sleep. Alexander asked the caregiver to take the baby to the nursery. Then he told Evelyn, "You should go lie down too. Don't sit for too long."

"I'm almost rusty," Evelyn complained.

"Just hold on for a month or two. It won't be so hard after that," Alexander coaxed.

Evelyn looked at Alexander. In the end, she compromised and went upstairs to lie down.

She pushed open the door to the master bedroom and went in. She remembered that day, when she was here, and then Nathan called. Later, she had slipped and fallen.

Her heart ached. Even after so many days, she could still feel the pain from that moment.

Evelyn lowered her eyelids and forced herself not to think about that day.

She walked towards the bathroom. She took a shower before resting.

Evelyn had just finished her bath and came out of the dressing room in her pajamas. She saw Alexander sitting on the sofa. He seemed to be thinking about something, a little lost in thought.

He didn't even react when she came out.

"Alexander?" Evelyn called softly.

"Huh?" Alexander snapped back to reality. He stood up and came over.
