Luckily, Grace brought her some books and craft supplies. She could read or do crafts to kill the time.
If she felt tired, she could go upstairs to rest.
Otherwise, she could watch TV or listen to music to relax. It didn't seem so boring anymore.
That afternoon, Evie took a nap and then sat on the sofa to watch a movie.
Halfway through, she got bored. She grabbed the remote to change the channel. When she flipped, she suddenly caught a glimpse of the porch of Sterling Group's building. It was swarming with reporters waiting for interviews.
Evie quickly switched back. The news broadcast was indeed about the Sterling family.
The headline at the bottom read: "Lillian Sterling Reveals Mystery of Sterling Family Lineage."
Then the host said a family member had told a newspaper that Alexander Sterling, the president of Sterling Group, was not a true Sterling. His background was a mystery.
Another commentator analyzed that if Alexander wasn't a Sterling, he might lose his inheritance rights. His position as president might not be secure. However, because his contributions to the company over the years were obvious to all, shareholders might still support him. But in the end, Eleanor Sterling held the most shares. Unless several major shareholders united.
Finally, the commentator said this could be another major shake-up after the unexpected death of the previous president, Thomas Sterling. They would have to wait and see where Sterling Group went next.
After watching the news, Evie was stunned for a long time. Then she snapped out of it.
It seemed Lillian was really going all out.
Evie picked up her phone to call Alexander and tell him what she saw. The next second, she hesitated. Alexander would have received the news before she did. Right now, he was probably busy dealing with it, trying to minimize the negative impact. If she called him now, she would only disturb him.
So Evie gave up the idea of calling Alexander. She went downstairs to find Grace.
"Grace, do you have today's newspaper? I want to read it," Evie asked.
"I didn't prepare any newspapers. Which one do you want? I'll buy it for you," Grace said.
"Forget it. I'm just bored. I wanted to browse to pass the time," Evie replied.
When she had lunch, she saw Grace holding a newspaper. Wasn't it today's?
Or had Grace purposely put it away so she wouldn't see it?
"Don't you like the books I brought?" Grace asked.
"No, I just feel bored and want to read the newspaper," Evie said.
"I'll buy some for you tomorrow," Grace replied.
"Okay, it's nothing. I'll go upstairs and rest first."
"I'll call you when dinner is ready."
"Okay," Evie answered and went upstairs.
Without newspapers, she could find out things in other ways.
After going upstairs, Evie picked up her phone. She realized it wasn't a smartphone at all. It couldn't access the internet.
And her own phone had been turned off. Nathan had explained before that she should try not to use her personal phone.
That meant she had no way to search for information online.
Evie had to put down her phone. She went to the next room to check.
That was Alexander's study. There must be a computer in there.
But the study door was locked.
Evie sighed and finally gave up the idea of going online.
Alexander didn't want her to worry too much. So she wouldn't worry about it.
Evie caressed her bulging belly. Right now, taking care of herself and the baby was the best way to let Alexander focus. Maybe that was the biggest support she could give him.
Over the next two days, Evie ate and slept whenever she could. She lived like a pig.
Alexander called her every night. They chatted for over ten minutes. He never mentioned those annoying things. He only asked how she was doing, how much she ate, and if the baby was behaving.
Evie cooperated and answered him. She didn't ask how things were going. She didn't mention the news she had seen.
Just as Grace said, Alexander would handle it.
So instead of worrying him and causing trouble, she should take good care of herself. She would act like she knew nothing. That way, Alexander could rest assured and focus on solving the problem.
That afternoon, Evie called home. Her mother, Amelia, answered.
"Mom, it's me," Evie said.
"Evie, where have you been? Why can't I get through on your phone? Do you want to scare me to death?" Amelia asked angrily when she heard her daughter's voice.
"Mom, I'm fine. There's some trouble at home recently. Alexander doesn't trust the situation, so he asked me to move out for a few days. Didn't he tell you and Dad?" Evie explained.
"Alexander called your father. But I just don't trust you," Amelia said.
"Mom, don't be prejudiced against Alexander," Evie said with a smile. Ever since the Grace O'Sullivan incident, her mother seemed to hold a grudge against Alexander.
"I'm not prejudiced. I just don't trust you," Amelia retorted.
"Mom, I'm fine. You can rest assured. After a while, I'll come back," Evie comforted her.
"Evie, your father told me not to tell you. He was afraid it would affect your mood. But I always think it's not that simple. So I think you should know about it."
"What's the matter, Mom? It's okay. Just tell me."
"I heard that Alexander is not a child of the Sterling family. He has no blood relation to them. Is it true?"
"Mom, the Sterling family had some trouble because of the division of property. Then someone slandered Alexander like this," Evie explained.
"I heard it was his third sister, Lillian, who said it. How could there be such a vicious woman? For the sake of money, she even said her own brother wasn't part of the family. It's true that everyone has their faults."
"Mom, let's not worry about other people. There will always be a result. Alexander was worried that I would be affected, so he asked me to move out for a while."
"Where are you living now?" Amelia asked uneasily.
"Mom, I'm safe now. You can rest assured. I just called to tell you, Dad, and Victoria not to worry about me. Also, you should be more careful during this time. Although you have nothing to do with the Sterling family, you should still pay attention," Evie explained.
"Don't worry. I don't go anywhere usually. Besides, their family property dispute has nothing to do with us," Amelia answered. Finally, she asked, "If Alexander really isn't a child of the Sterling family, does that mean he has nothing to do with them? And the Sterling family has no share for him?"
"Mom, don't worry about it. No matter whether Alexander is a child of the Sterling family or the president of Sterling Group, he is my husband. As long as he is fine, I don't care about anything else."
