"Evelyn, you might not be able to hear what I'm saying, and you might not want to believe it.
But don't shut me out just because of that.
I won't deny that I once had a deep connection with Grace, and I won't deny that I struggled to let her go for a while.
Like you said, I was too proud to handle losing.
If I hadn't met you, I'd probably still be stuck in the past.
But since I've been with you, I find myself happy without even realizing it. Sometimes I get distracted at work, thinking about your funny expressions and your smile.
If I have to say who occupies my heart now, it's only you.
You affect my emotions.
These past few days have felt like years to me. No matter how hard I used to work, life just went on. But now, I feel a deep sadness.
We had no emotional foundation when we got married, but we've gotten along so well since then. You have feelings for me too.
So why can't you believe that I have feelings for you, maybe even deeper ones?
I'm not asking you to trust me right away. But don't push me away completely.
Give me a chance. Let me grow old with you, slowly. Okay?"
Alexander held Evelyn close, his voice full of emotion.
Evelyn bit her lip. She didn't dare turn around or respond. She was afraid that if she did, her emotions would spill out.
She was a mess right now. Her heart was softening, but she couldn't just give in because of one reason.
"The truth is, I need you. I can't live without you," Alexander whispered in her ear.
His voice was low, like a gentle breeze rustling the willows. It swayed softly, stirring Evelyn's heart and creating ripples.
"Alexander, I—" Evelyn started to say something.
"Evelyn, don't leave me," Alexander interrupted her words. He kissed her lips, stopping her from saying anything that sounded like rejection.
Early in the morning, the first ray of sunlight streamed into the bedroom. Evelyn was half-awake, but she could already feel Alexander's warmth behind her.
His hand rested on her waist, as if he was afraid to hold her too tightly, but also afraid she would leave. So he didn't wrap his arm around her completely.
Evelyn turned her head and looked at Alexander. He was frowning slightly, even in his sleep. Seeing this, Evelyn couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy.
She wondered if his frown was because of their problems or because of his third sister. But even while asleep, he couldn't relax.
Evelyn couldn't help but sigh.
Even though her sigh was very soft, Alexander woke up. He opened his eyes and looked at her.
Evelyn quickly looked away and pretended to be asleep. She didn't know how to face him.
When Alexander saw Evelyn, the corners of his mouth lifted involuntarily. He moved closer to her.
"It's too crowded," Evelyn protested.
"No, I think it's just right. Very comfortable," Alexander said lazily.
Evelyn rolled her eyes. She glanced at the time and said, "You should get up and go to work."
"It's rare to have a good sleep. I need to sleep a little longer to make up for all the insomnia lately," Alexander said, rubbing against Evelyn's back and getting even closer.
"I hate this. You're going to push me off the bed."
"Come closer," Alexander said, moving back a little. At the same time, he didn't forget to hold Evelyn.
"Be careful, the baby," Evelyn exclaimed.
"I'm being careful. It'll be fine," Alexander replied, still holding her tightly.
Evelyn couldn't help but reach out and pat his arm.
Alexander smiled and kissed the back of Evelyn's neck.
"Get up now," Evelyn said.
"Evelyn, don't move," Alexander said in a low voice.
Evelyn froze. She really didn't dare to move. She was afraid of reigniting the passion from last night.
Alexander only kissed the back of her neck and her earlobe, then lightly touched her curves. He didn't do anything more.
It wasn't that he wasn't tempted. But Evelyn was pregnant. Even though they had been intimate last night, he had to restrain himself as much as possible.
Alexander finally let her go after holding her for a long time. He explained, "You sleep a little longer. I'll have Lily bring you breakfast later. I'm going to work now."
"Okay," Evelyn replied softly.
Alexander lowered his head and kissed Evelyn on the cheek. Then he got up and went into the bathroom to wash up.
Evelyn opened her eyes after Alexander entered the bathroom.
She felt a little melancholy. In the end, she was too soft-hearted. She couldn't resist Alexander's charm. Last night, she had let the wolf into the house. No, she had shared the bed with him again.
What Alexander said last night touched her heart. She couldn't deny that she felt something.
Alexander was really good to her. They had been getting along so well. If none of this had happened, she might have lived a carefree life with him.
But life wasn't that smooth. Grace's appearance had stirred up their once peaceful relationship and life.
She had also started to face her own feelings and marriage.
Everyone wants their feelings and marriage to be one and the same. But when reality isn't perfect, you have to calm down and think about a better way to handle the relationship.
Even though she was introverted, lazy, and peaceful, she had a cleanliness habit when it came to feelings. She might not be his first, but she had to be his only one. She couldn't settle for less. If Alexander had someone else's shadow in his heart, she would rather not have him at all.
It wasn't that it didn't hurt. But a short pain was better than a long one.
So what she said to Alexander before wasn't impulsive. It was her true feelings. She hadn't hidden them.
But what Alexander said last night moved her. She still chose to believe and accept him.
"Alexander, don't let me down," Evelyn whispered to herself.
It wasn't so much giving Alexander a chance as it was taking a risk. She was risking her life's happiness and marriage, all for the chance that lovers would end up together.
Alexander came out of the bathroom. Evelyn had fallen asleep, but there was a tear in the corner of her eye.
Alexander didn't want to wake her up, but he couldn't help kissing that tear away.
Then he heard Evelyn say, "Alexander, don't let me down."
Alexander quietly looked at her sleeping face and slowly replied, "No. You are the one I want to protect for my whole life."
Evelyn was already asleep and didn't hear his response. But it didn't matter. He could prove it with his whole life. After all, a lifetime, whether long or short, had decades of time. That was enough.
