“Aren’t I with you right now?” Evie said, laughing through her tears.
“Focus on one thing at a time. You can’t do two things at once. Just focus on me!” Alexander scolded.
Evie looked at him with a smile.
“Fine. I’ll just stay here with you like this, doing nothing.”
“We could do something else,” Alexander said, leaning close to Evie and kissing her lips.
Evie wanted to laugh, but the laughter was soon swallowed by Alexander’s kiss.
Later that day, Victoria came to take care of her sister. She stayed for a long time. She also brought company documents, planning to work overtime whenever she had a free moment.
“Sis, I’ve never seen you work this hard before!” Evie said, laughing.
“I have no choice. I was hoping you’d inherit Dad’s business so I could just be a lazy boss.
Who knew you’d get married before you even graduated from university? Now I have to help Dad with everything, like some desperate workaholic!” Victoria sighed, putting on a pitiful expression.
“Sis, it’s a shame you didn’t become an actress!” Evie said with a grin.
Victoria rolled her eyes.
“Don’t rub salt in the wound!”
Evie suddenly remembered that her sister had really wanted to be an actress back in the day. She had even used connections to land a role that wasn’t even a supporting part.
It was the kind of character that got a little more screen time than an extra.
But the makeup was so thick that Evie almost thought it was someone else. She had watched that episode several times and still didn’t recognize her sister.
Victoria had to reluctantly point at a woman on screen and say, “That’s me.”
Evie laughed every time she thought about it.
Later, Victoria got another chance to play the third female lead. But she was told she had to play by the rules. That made her so angry she beat someone up. Their father had to pull a lot of strings and spend a lot of money to settle the matter.
In short, her sister’s dream was shattered. Now she focused entirely on taking over the family business.
“Sis, work hard. Maybe one day you’ll become a symbol of a strong, independent woman!” Evie comforted her.
“Forget the strong woman thing. I’d rather find a man who loves me, have a husband and kids. That’s more realistic.” Victoria rubbed her temples as she answered.
“Why not a man you love?” Evie asked with a smile.
“All the men I loved are dead. Where am I supposed to find one I love?” Victoria rolled her eyes and replied angrily.
“Sis, are you still angry about Aiden?” Evie asked cautiously.
“We broke up eight hundred years ago. Why would I still be angry?” Victoria said. “Don’t keep talking about boring stuff. Focus on your pregnancy! Forget it, let’s go for a walk. Your house always feels so stuffy to me.”
“That’s because you have things on your mind. Nothing looks good to you!” Evie retorted.
As soon as she said it, her sister glared at her again.
“Do you want to go for a walk? If you do, I’ll go with you!” Victoria asked.
“Wait for me to change. You said I look like I’m in pain at home. We’d better walk!” Evie laughed.
“It’s not that you look in pain. I just feel the atmosphere in your house doesn’t suit you. Change into something more comfortable!” Victoria replied.
Evie shook her head, laughing. She went upstairs to change. As she walked out of the bedroom, she heard the phone ring.
She picked up the cordless phone.
“Hello—”
“It’s me.” Alexander’s voice came from the other end.
“Alexander, I was just about to go shopping with my sister. How do you have time to call me?” Evie asked with a smile.
“Just finished work. Taking a moment to check on the little piglet at home.”
“Ha ha, you don’t need to check on me today. My sister came to keep me company.”
“Take your time. Don’t come home too late. Actually, forget it. I’ll pick you up after work.”
“No need. My sister will drop me off. You don’t know what time you’ll finish work! Don’t worry about me. I’m with my sister. She’ll take care of me!” Evie said.
“Okay. Take your time. See you tonight.”
“See you tonight.”
After hanging up with Alexander, Evie went downstairs.
“How long does it take to change clothes? You’re as slow as hatching an egg!” Victoria said impatiently.
“No, I just answered a phone call. It was Alexander. It delayed me a bit.” Evie took her sister’s arm and explained.
“Checking up on you?”
“No. He just finished work and called me when he had a free moment.” Evie explained.
Then she turned toward the kitchen and called out.
“Lily, I’m going out for a walk. After you’re done, go home and rest.”
“Be careful, ma’am.” Lily came out of the kitchen and greeted Victoria.
“I’ll be careful. Don’t worry. We’re leaving. Bye!” Evie said, and walked out of Sterling Manor with her sister.
“How can your maid be so young and pretty?” Victoria muttered after they had walked away.
“Yes. My maids are young, pretty, hardworking, and responsible!” Evie said triumphantly.
“You’d better be careful with someone like that. You never know when she might steal your husband.”
“Sis, you’re overthinking it. Lily has worked for our family for years. If there was anything wrong, it would have come out long ago. She wouldn’t wait until now. Besides, she’s not that kind of person!” Evie replied with a smile.
“Haven’t you heard the saying? Don’t harm others, but don’t be defenseless either.”
If she had to be on guard like her sister said, she’d be exhausted.
Alexander was born with a face that attracted attention. If she had to be on guard everywhere, she’d have to lock him up for twenty-four hours.
So the key to an affair was the man himself. If his heart was good, he wouldn’t be tempted.
But if he had other ideas from the start, it would be useless for her to take precautions anyway!
Victoria didn’t take Evie to the mall. On one hand, she thought the air in the mall was bad and there were too many people. On the other hand, they didn’t have anything special to buy. It was better to go to a farm not far away.
“Sis, where are we going?” Evie asked when she saw they were heading out of the city.
“Taking you to a place with good air and a nice environment.”
“Oh.” Evie nodded. She figured her sister would arrange everything, so she just followed.
When they reached their destination, Evie turned her head and asked curiously.
“Sis, where is this?”
“A friend of mine opened it. Following the principle of not letting good fortune flow to strangers, I’m bringing you here to look around.” Victoria said with a smile.
“Sis, you’re so thoughtful!” Evie said, holding Victoria’s arm.
“Wait. You’ll pay the entrance fee.”
“Huh? Isn’t it your friend? Why do we still need to pay?”
“Didn’t you hear me say not letting good fortune flow to strangers? You have to spend money when you go out anyway. Why not spend it here and increase my friend’s income?”
Evie was amused by Victoria’s nonsense and asked.
“Sis, do you have shares in this place too?”
