She had originally planned to visit her sister-in-law.
But after hearing Lily’s words, she felt her second sister had something to say.
Her third sister wasn’t home.
Evie thought Alexander must be hiding something from her.
Maybe he didn’t tell her because he was afraid she’d worry.
She decided to go back to Sterling Manor first.
She would find a chance to ask Alexander tonight.
Then she would visit her sister-in-law tomorrow.
“Lily, do you have a boyfriend?” Evie asked with a smile.
Lily’s face turned bright red.
She stammered for a long time without saying a word.
It was completely unlike her usual confident self.
“It’s nothing to be shy about. Men marry, women marry. Look at me, I’m only twenty and I’m already married!” Evie said cheerfully.
“That’s because you’re lucky, ma’am. How many men are as good as Mr. Sterling?” Grace replied.
“If Alexander hears you praise him like that, he’ll be too happy to sleep.”
“Mr. Sterling only wants to hear praise from you, ma’am. I’m just stating the facts!” Lily answered.
“Lily, you’re so good with words!”
“No, I’m just telling the truth.” Lily replied, embarrassed.
“I’m not teasing you. Really, what kind of man do you like? I can help you keep an eye out!”
“Ma’am, I don’t want to get married yet!” Lily muttered.
“If you don’t want to get married, you can still date first. Or you can take your time getting to know someone. After all, it’s a lifelong matter. Rushing isn’t good.” Evie sighed.
She had married Alexander in a hurry.
Although she was lucky to have met him, she still had some regrets.
If she and Alexander had fallen in love first, gotten to know each other, and then married when their relationship was stable, maybe she would have been more at ease when facing many things.
But that was just human nature.
When things were bad, you wanted them better. When they were good, you wanted them perfect.
But in this world, nothing was perfect.
“Ma’am, you know these things require fate. When I meet the right person, we’ll naturally be together.” Lily replied with a smile.
“That’s true. Good luck to you!” Evie nodded.
“Thank you, ma’am!” Lily answered, blushing.
Lily didn’t want to say more, so Evie didn’t ask further.
After all, it was a personal question. She couldn’t pry too much.
Back at Sterling Manor, Lily brought Evie some stewed soup.
After finishing the soup, Evie rested and continued knitting her scarf.
Alexander came back very late.
He smelled of alcohol.
After apologizing to Evie, he went into the bedroom to take a shower.
Evie tidied up the wool balls and knitting needles.
Then she went downstairs to make Alexander a cup of hangover tea.
“Did you drink a lot today?” Evie asked with concern as Alexander came out of the shower.
“Not really. I just accidentally spilled wine on my clothes. The smell is a bit strong!” Alexander explained.
“Social events always require drinking. Just don’t drink too much. Take care of your health. I made you some hangover tea!” Evie said.
What Alexander said was what he said.
If he wanted to tell her, he would naturally do so.
If he didn’t want to, she wouldn’t ask.
“Thank you, wife. No one cares about me more than you do!” Alexander smiled and drank the hangover tea.
Then he asked Evie how she felt today.
Was the baby behaving well?
“Everything is fine!” Evie said.
“You look a little bigger today.” Alexander looked at her slightly swollen belly.
“I can’t tell!” Evie looked down at her abdomen and muttered.
“Of course you can’t notice the changes in yourself.” Alexander replied with a smile.
“But you go out in the morning, and we’re together every day. How can you see it?”
“It’s been more than twelve hours since I left this morning. It’s normal to see changes. It shows I pay more attention!”
Evie couldn’t help but laugh.
Even when he was being unreasonable, Alexander could make it sound reasonable.
“I went for a walk today. I met my second sister and went to her house for a while.” Evie looked at Alexander and continued.
“Is that so?” Alexander replied calmly.
“She wasn’t working. She was on vacation at home.”
“I was thinking about taking a few days off to take you out for some relaxation.” Alexander raised his eyes and looked at Evie.
“I’m pregnant now. Where would I go? It’s better to stay home!” Evie glanced at him.
She wanted to go out too.
But it was better to stay home at this time.
“Don’t you want to go to Misty Isle? Mother Iris was very happy to know you’re pregnant!” Alexander played with a strand of Evie’s hair and asked.
“Yes, but I can’t handle the back-and-forth travel now.” Evie met Alexander’s gaze. “Okay, we’ll go after the baby is born.”
“Alexander, is there something wrong at home?” Evie asked.
Even though Alexander had naturally changed the subject just now, she hadn’t forgotten.
She had wanted to ask him from the beginning.
She wouldn’t be so easily distracted.
“What do you mean?” Alexander asked.
“Did my second sister and third sister have a conflict with Mother?” Evie hesitated.
“Who told you that?” Alexander replied calmly.
“Never mind who said it. Just tell me what’s going on. I don’t know anything!”
“It’s a trivial matter.”
“What trivial matter?”
“It’s all about the family division. Some people want a bigger share. Some people think it’s unfair. Naturally, problems arise.” Alexander responded.
“Oh. Who thinks it’s unfair? Third sister?” Evie blurted out.
“Yes.” Alexander didn’t hide it anymore. He nodded. “Third sister got some personal information from somewhere. She says I’m not Father’s biological child. In other words, I’m not qualified to inherit the Sterling family property.”
“What?” Evie stared at Alexander in shock.
How could this be more dramatic than a soap opera?
“Don’t be so surprised. Don’t get excited. Think about the baby!” Alexander smiled to calm her down.
“I know. Just tell me quickly!” Evie was anxious.
“That means your husband might become a pauper. I might have nothing to do with the Sterling family anymore.” Alexander continued.
“I don’t want to hear that. How can Third sister suddenly say you’re not Father’s child?” Evie asked in surprise.
“Because of the blood type. She said she and Second sister are both type O. Father is also type O. So it’s impossible for them to have a type AB child like me.” Alexander said lightly.
Evie stared at him blankly.
It took her a long time to finally say something.
“Type O blood can’t produce a type AB child!”
