“You kick a few times every night, and I wake up just as many times,” Evelyn said, staring into Alexander’s eyes. “Do you really think I can get a good night’s sleep?”
“Oh, don’t bother with me anymore. Just sleep with you. I’m cold anyway, so I’ll just cover myself,” Alexander replied.
“I seriously doubt what you just said. Looks like I’ll have to take care of both you and the little one from now on,” Evelyn sighed.
“Stop talking nonsense. I can take care of myself just fine,” Evelyn said with a smile.
Still, she couldn’t help but hold Alexander’s hand and lean her head on his shoulder.
Honestly, she had missed him so much.
Even though they had been together last night, it felt like days since they had really seen each other.
“By the way, how did you manage to come here in the afternoon?” Evelyn asked again.
“Didn’t I tell you I had nothing to do this afternoon?”
“It’s strange. If you’re not working overtime, I’d be shocked. How can you have nothing to do at work?” Evelyn seriously doubted his words.
“Well, you can see that I missed you and the baby, so I skipped work to come see you,” Alexander said solemnly.
Evelyn burst out laughing.
“I like that excuse. But don’t make a habit of it. You’d better go back to work.”
“It’s a beautiful day. Want to take a walk with me?” Alexander asked, looking out the window.
“Sure,” Evelyn said. “Wait for me to change.”
She finished speaking, got up, and walked toward the stairs.
Alexander followed.
“I’m going to change. Why are you following me?” Evelyn asked.
“To watch you change,” Alexander replied with a light smile.
“Pervert,” Evelyn said with a grin, but she didn’t stop him.
She let him follow her back to the bedroom.
Evelyn picked out a loose-fitting outfit and went into the bathroom to change.
When she came out, she saw Alexander standing by the window.
“The view out here isn’t any worse than the one from Sterling Manor,” she said with a smile.
“No, it’s quite charming,” Alexander said as he walked over.
“Ha, you’re just saying that because it’s a dump,” Evelyn laughed.
The view from her window was just the trees by the yard and the fence.
Alexander came up to Evelyn and naturally wrapped his arm around her waist, looking down at her.
“I feel like you’re different today.”
“Different how?” Alexander asked.
“I can’t put my finger on it. Just a little different,” Evelyn tilted her head and replied.
“Is that so?” Alexander smiled, then lowered his head to kiss her lips.
A thought crossed Evelyn’s mind. Alexander didn’t skip work just because he missed her.
Well, even though he was thinking about her and the baby, she didn’t take his words too seriously.
But she had missed him, that was true.
She wrapped her arms around his waist, closed her eyes, and responded to his kiss with all her heart.
Because she missed him, she craved closeness even more.
Alexander looked at Evelyn, an uncontrollable smile spreading across his face.
“Is it funny?” Evelyn asked, looking down at herself.
She had bought this outfit back in college.
At the time, baby-doll clothes were popular. When she went shopping with Emily, the counter was having a buy-one-get-one-free promotion. She and Emily each bought one.
But after they bought them, they never liked wearing them. It felt like they were wearing maternity clothes. So they had been sitting idle until now.
She never thought they would come in handy.
“No, it just makes you look very small,” Alexander said.
“I am very young,” Evelyn said, tilting her head.
Alexander looked at her with a smile but didn’t argue.
She really did look small, like a baby that needed to be taken care of.
It had nothing to do with age.
“By the way, isn’t today the day your family is splitting up?” Evelyn suddenly remembered and turned to Alexander.
“What do you mean ‘your family’? My family is your family,” Alexander corrected.
“Alright, I’m wrong. Today is the day our family is splitting up,” Evelyn corrected herself.
But saying it that way felt even more awkward.
“It’s not decided yet,” Alexander said.
“Why?” Evelyn asked curiously.
“Do you want them to split up?” Alexander looked at her and asked.
“No, it’s just that you said before that if your second and third sisters insisted on splitting, it would happen today. Did they change their minds?” Evelyn continued her gossip.
“They’re still thinking about it. I’m not really clear on the details,” Alexander had to brush it off.
“Splitting up a family isn’t a small matter. They really should think it over,” Evelyn nodded.
After Alexander and Evelyn returned from their walk, Amelia also came back from grocery shopping.
Since Alexander wanted to stay for dinner, Amelia bought more seafood.
At dinner, Evelyn wanted to eat crab, not shrimp. So she could only watch her mother wait on him, completely ignoring her own daughter.
Ah, Evelyn couldn’t help but swallow her saliva. Then she ate her nutritious meal with a sad face.
After she gave birth to the baby, she would eat whatever she wanted.
Evelyn silently comforted herself.
After dinner, Alexander answered a phone call and told Evelyn to rest early. He had to go out for a while and would be back later.
Evelyn told him to be careful and didn’t ask any more questions.
Since she couldn’t watch TV or play with her phone, Evelyn could only read books out of boredom.
Luckily, she had always loved reading and had bought a lot.
So if she wanted to read now, she could just grab one anytime without having to go out of her way to find it.
After reading for a while, she still couldn’t focus. Evelyn had to call Charlotte.
Charlotte didn’t pick up, so Evelyn had to give up.
Just as Evelyn was about to continue reading in a daze, her phone rang.
She thought it was Charlotte calling back, but when she picked up her phone, it was Emily.
“Emily—” Evelyn answered the phone.
“Evelyn, you quit!” Emily exclaimed in surprise on the other end.
“Yes, didn’t I tell you before that I was going to quit?” Evelyn said with a smile.
“I know! But didn’t you say you were going to work until the end of the month?” Emily asked.
“Originally, I was going to. But later, there wasn’t much to hand over, so the company approved it early. Starting today, I don’t have to go to work anymore,” Evelyn explained.
“That makes sense. It’s really inconvenient for you to go to work with a belly,” Emily responded.
“Yeah, I’m going to stay home and wait for the baby now.”
“You’re so lucky. You got married right after graduation, and now you’re a mother-to-be,” Emily said enviously.
“Don’t make fun of me. Who doesn’t want to work hard after graduation?” Evelyn sighed.
