“Not really. That’s exactly what Mom said,” Evelyn replied.

“That’s strange. Mom would never say that.” Alexander frowned. Then he let out a relieved sigh. “But she’s okay now. I was terrified last night.”

“Mom is getting older. Her body is breaking down. It’s natural for problems to show up.”

“I think we need to hire a nurse for her. It would be safer.”

“I tried that before. Mom said it wasn’t necessary. She said Chloe was enough to take care of her. Let’s see how she recovers this time. Then we’ll talk to her about it again,” Alexander said with a nod.

“Still, a nurse would give us peace of mind. If something unexpected happens, she’ll know what to do,” Evelyn muttered.

“You’re such a sweet little daughter-in-law in our family.”

“I’m serious!” Evelyn looked up at him.

“I’m serious too.” Alexander winked.

“Little daughter-in-law?” Evelyn chewed on the words. Then she looked up at him. “Does that mean there’s a big daughter-in-law?”

“Aren’t you Mom’s little daughter-in-law? Isn’t the big daughter-in-law the eldest sister-in-law?” Alexander pinched her nose.

Evelyn was speechless for a moment.

“I meant you!”

“I don’t know yet. It depends on how many sons you give me.”

“...” Evelyn was silent for a long time.

Winning an argument with Alexander was basically a dream.

Forget it. Taking a shower and going to sleep was more realistic.

Her mother-in-law was still in the hospital.

She would go see her early tomorrow morning.

Evelyn fell asleep the moment her head hit the pillow. She was exhausted. And knowing her mother-in-law’s condition had improved, she relaxed and drifted off easily.

When Evelyn and Alexander arrived at the hospital, her mother-in-law was awake. She was still in the ICU, but she looked much better.

The nurse told them that when they arrived, she could move her eyes to see them. Finally, when she couldn’t see them anymore, she moved her finger.

Alexander changed into sterile clothes and went in to see his mother.

Evelyn stayed outside and chatted with Audrey.

Audrey had watched over their mother last night.

“Second sister, I’ll take the night shift. You have to work. Watching Mom all night is too hard,” Evelyn said.

“It’s fine. Mom’s condition is better. I even dozed off a little last night,” Audrey said with a smile.

“You can’t sleep well here. I have more free time. I’ll come in the evening,” Evelyn insisted.

“Alright. Let’s listen to the doctor. If Mom’s condition is stable today, she can be moved out of the ICU tomorrow. Then there will be a family bed in the ward. You can rest there. It won’t be so tiring.”

“Okay. As long as Mom is fine, nothing else matters.” Evelyn nodded. “Second sister, if there’s nothing else, you should go home and rest.”

“It’s okay. I’ll wait for my brother to come out. Then I’ll go back.”

“Alright.”

Alexander came out soon.

“How is Mom feeling now?” Audrey asked.

“She just wants to leave the hospital. She says she can’t stay here,” Alexander replied.

“Mom, I’m joking. She just had surgery. How can she leave the hospital?” Audrey said.

“That’s just Mom’s nature. I tried to persuade her.

Evelyn, in another four hours, when visiting hours start, you can go in and chat with her.”

Now Evelyn was more popular with her mother-in-law than her own son.

“Okay,” Evelyn nodded.

“Besides wanting to be discharged, did Mom say anything else?” Audrey asked again.

“She said you and Scarlett worked hard these past two days,” Alexander said with a smile.

“Hard work? It’s what we should do.” Audrey paused, then replied.

“Second sister, there’s nothing else. You go home and rest. I need to go to the company soon. I’ll leave this to Evelyn.”

“Evelyn, I’m counting on you here,” Alexander said to her.

“Don’t worry. I’ll watch over Mom. You can go back,” Evelyn replied with a smile.

Alexander touched her head. Evelyn was sweating again.

They left together.

Evelyn sat on the chair and waited for four hours. Then she went in to see her mother-in-law.

Bored, she texted Charlie.

“Are you at work?”

Charlie had returned to China and was now working as a designer at a company.

Charlie was too lazy to type, so she called directly.

“You’re up so early today?” Evelyn answered the phone and asked with a smile.

“What? I didn’t go to bed until almost three in the morning. I’m still in bed now!” Charlie scratched her hair and said drowsily.

“Then why did you call me?”

“Who likes being woken up early in the morning by someone?” Charlie complained directly.

“I didn’t know you went to bed at three. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have texted you,” Evelyn said with a smile.

“What’s up with me?”

“Nothing. I was just bored and wanted to text you.”

“Evelyn, you’re too full! Hold on!

If you’re bored, find your husband to do something!”

“He has to work. He doesn’t have time.”

“Then let me sleep!”

“I didn’t mean to. I didn’t know you were still sleeping!”

“It’s strange. It’s not the weekend. How can you be bored?

Aren’t you usually so busy you don’t even have time to go to the bathroom?”

“I haven’t gone to work these past two days.”

“Why? Are you busy making people at home?”

“No. Anyway, you go to work just to pass the time. It’s not important.”

Evelyn was speechless. She had been working hard, trying to be the future star of Sterling Group. But Charlie made it sound worthless.

“I’m trying hard to be Sterling Group’s future star!”

“You might as well be Sterling Group’s future star!” Charlie poured cold water on her.

“Hmph. Different paths, don’t conspire! I won’t tell you. Go back to sleep!” Evelyn joked.

“Angry!” Charlie laughed.

“I can be angry!” Evelyn replied firmly.

“Alright. Come sleep with me!” Charlie said with a smile.

“No, I don’t have time. I’ll see you another day.”

“Okay.”

After talking to Charlie, Evelyn got up and walked to the window to check on her mother-in-law.

Her mother-in-law was still sleeping. The data on the bedside monitor was normal. So she went back to sit and continued to be bored.

Early in the morning, two secretaries in the secretary’s office were gossiping.

“Why hasn’t Evelyn come to work these past two days?”

“She asked Secretary Harper for leave. She said she had something to do.”

“I don’t know. But it’s possible.”

“If Evelyn really has it, won’t she come to work?”

“I don’t think so. She’ll at least take a long vacation for a few months.”

“Evelyn still has a long way to go. She has to work hard like us.”

“That’s true.”

The two secretaries gossiped one by one.
