Alexander Sterling stopped walking. He looked at Evelyn quietly.
Evelyn was stunned too. That sentence just slipped out. It didn’t even go through her brain.
Even she hadn’t expected to say it.
“Very good. If anyone asks you, answer exactly like that.” Alexander bent down and kissed her. Then he smiled.
Evelyn was completely embarrassed. She pulled the blanket up and covered her face. Her ears were burning hot.
Alexander reached out and turned off the light. He got into the bed. The next second, he pulled her into his arms. He lowered his head and gave her a gentle peck.
The night was very quiet. Only their heartbeats overlapped. Only their breaths tangled together.
From the moment she woke up until she left for work, Evelyn didn’t dare look at her phone.
She didn’t need to think about it. Even if they didn’t call, they would send messages asking what was going on.
She was like an ostrich. She refused to face reality.
She had spoken so confidently yesterday. But if they really asked her like that, she wouldn’t have the nerve to say, “Because we love each other.”
But Murphy’s Law told her one truth. The more afraid you are, the more things happen.
As soon as Evelyn got out of the car and walked toward Sterling Group’s building, she heard someone calling her.
She didn’t need to turn around. She knew it was Emily Hart’s voice.
Pretending not to hear was impossible. The voice was too close.
Sure enough, the moment Evelyn turned around, she saw Emily jogging over. Then Emily grabbed her arm.
It was like catching a thief. Like she was saying, “Where do you think you’re going?”
“Emily—” Evelyn said awkwardly.
“Long time no see!” Emily said with a smile.
“We just separated last night!” Evelyn smiled back.
“Yeah, we had a class reunion last night!” Emily replied seriously. Then she added, “Don’t you think you owe me an explanation about what happened last night?”
“What happened last night?” Evelyn asked instinctively.
“What do you think?” Emily asked with a grin.
Evelyn shrank back. She had a bad feeling.
“You know,” Emily said, still smiling, “if I spread this gossip around the company, what do you think would happen?”
“Alright, alright. You saw it. I… I’m married!”
“Huh? Really?” Emily stopped walking. She stared at Evelyn in shock.
She had discussed it with Stella all night. They had guessed at the answer. But hearing Evelyn admit it now was still hard to believe.
“I got married at the end of last year. I didn’t tell you because… I’m sorry!” Evelyn had to explain.
“Evelyn—” Emily said in a strange tone.
Evelyn felt goosebumps rise on her skin.
“I’m wrong, I’m wrong. I’ll treat you to dinner. Don’t be mad!”
“Do you think one meal can solve this? We were college classmates for four years! We were roommates! We slept in the same bed! We wore the same pair of pants—”
“We never wore the same pair of pants!” Evelyn corrected.
“It’s a metaphor! Don’t you understand?” Emily rolled her eyes at Evelyn.
“Okay, okay. We really were close!” Evelyn replied, her face full of embarrassment.
“If we were that close, how could you hide your marriage from me? Do you think you’re being too much, or are you just too sorry for me?”
Evelyn listened to Emily’s long string of complaints. Cold sweat broke out on her forehead.
Judging by Emily’s tone, she had become her mortal enemy.
“I didn’t mean to hide it from you. I was going to tell you after graduation!” Evelyn explained.
“After the graduation ceremony, maybe I’ll go back to my hometown!”
“You don’t want to stay here for work?”
“If I don’t sign the contract, what’s the point of staying?”
“Lady, lady! Watch your image!”
“Yeah, I’m a lady now. And you’re a married woman now!” Emily said triumphantly.
Evelyn was speechless.
“Evelyn, are you really married to Mr. Sterling?” Emily couldn’t help asking again.
Evelyn nodded awkwardly.
“Oh my God. Am I college classmates and roommates with the boss’s wife?”
“That doesn’t mean I can take shortcuts here. Alexander won’t let me use the back door!” Evelyn said, embarrassed.
“Come on. Am I the kind of person who needs a back door?” Emily scoffed.
“No, you’re not. You’re not!” Evelyn immediately flattered her.
“You’re the boss’s wife. Why are you still interning?”
“I’m no different from you. From the application to the interview to the internship now, it’s all the same. That’s also why my relationship with Alexander hasn’t been made public in the company yet!” Evelyn said, her head held high.
“I really don’t understand you rich people. You’re just bored!”
“It’s not about having money or not. It’s a matter of principle!”
“That’s true. If Mr. Sterling’s wife couldn’t even get an internship, he would lose face!” Emily nodded in agreement.
Evelyn was stunned. Emily sounded exactly like Alexander.
“How did you talk exactly like him?” Evelyn asked.
“Really?” Emily asked again when they reached the lower part of Sterling Group’s building. “How did you talk to Mrs. Sterling?”
“You’ve asked that so many times!” Evelyn said.
“I’m just so surprised. I can’t accept reality yet!”
“It’s not as complicated as you think. I just got married a little earlier!” Evelyn answered, touching her nose.
“It’s not surprising that you got married early. The problem is who you married! It’s Mr. Sterling!”
“He’s just a normal person. He doesn’t have three heads and six arms. There’s nothing special about him!” Evelyn replied, half laughing, half crying.
“Hmph. Handsome men are always looked down on. But at least he has money.”
Evelyn laughed. “Okay, okay. He’s the perfect man. Do you want to go to work today? In five minutes, we’ll both be late!” she reminded Emily.
“Huh? Let’s keep chatting at lunch. Let’s keep chatting at lunch. We’ll eat together at noon. Ha! I can’t be late. I have to wait for the contract to be signed smoothly! I’ll talk to you later!” Emily suddenly acted like she had been stepped on her tail. She let go of Evelyn and rushed straight into the lobby.
Evelyn watched Emily’s back and couldn’t help laughing.
Even though Emily was a little chubby, she ran like the wind.
When Evelyn got to the elevator, Emily was still waiting. The elevator was full, so Emily hadn’t squeezed in.
Suddenly, Emily looked at Evelyn with a sad face. “It’s all your fault!”
Evelyn could only meet Emily’s eyes innocently and smile apologetically.
Finally, just before work started, Evelyn got into the elevator. She went upstairs and pressed her fingerprint.
She put down her bag. She turned on the computer. Then she took her water cup to clean it and fill it with water.
When she returned to the secretarial office, she heard Chloe Parker and Ella Baker gossiping.
