Since leaving the office, Liam Williams had been holed up on the top floor of Pinnacle Corporation, in his private suite, listening in on the conversation between Emma Johnson and Elijah Clark.
He heard Emma fall silent for a long moment. What's this? Is the woman starting to doubt his character too?
Liam grabbed a cigarette from the box on his desk, lit it, and tossed the lighter carelessly onto the polished surface. He continued to eavesdrop.
Seeing she wasn't speaking, Elijah pressed on. "Emma, do you have feelings for him? And does he treat you well?"
"What? You mean Liam Williams?" Emma's heart tightened. How was she supposed to answer that?
Did she like him? She knew very well that when she married Liam, there were no feelings between them.
Now, things weren't so bad when they got along. She hated his overbearing nature, but when he was gentle, she couldn't refuse him.
"No, it's not good or bad. I can't really describe how I feel, but life has to go on." Emma replied lightly.
Liam clenched his jaw. Just making do?
The rage inside the man nearly burned the building down. He tightened his fists. What the hell is wrong with her?
Just the day before yesterday, in front of his father, hadn't she said she liked him?
What was happening now?
Couldn't she open her mouth in front of Elijah?
Did Emma have some special feelings for Elijah Clark?
The more he thought about it, the more irritated Liam became. He reached up and loosened the tie around his neck.
"You're still the Emma I remember—gentle and lovely. I haven't seen you in so long. I've missed you terribly." When Elijah said this, his eyes were full of tenderness.
Emma barely managed a smile, but a bitter feeling slowly spread in her heart.
She nodded mischievously. "I see you're still smooth-talking. Let's order and eat, okay? Elijah, I've missed you too. Welcome back! This meal is on me, so eat up."
Liam slammed his fist on the desk. What?
She missed him too?
Damn it!
Emma must think he's been too gentle with her lately.
Is this something a married woman should say?
With a dark expression, Liam raised his hand and swept the laptop and documents off the desk.
No, he had to go get that girl Emma home right now.
Otherwise, who knows what would happen next between them.
With that thought, he immediately picked up his phone and dialed the driver. "Matthew, get the car ready."
"Sir, I've been waiting for you downstairs." Matthew's tired voice came through.
He was a dedicated man. If the boss didn't leave, he didn't dare clock out. Even though all the employees of Pinnacle Corporation had gone home, he still had to sit in the car and wait for the boss's call at any time.
Liam pursed his lips, grabbed his phone, and put it in his pocket. He stood up, buttoned his coat, and headed for the elevator.
In the car, he remained silent the whole time.
Matthew had tried to chat with him this morning, but the young master had threatened him sourly to speak less in the future.
Now, seeing Liam's grim face, Matthew wondered, Did the young lady upset her husband again?
Matthew nervously swallowed his saliva and asked in a low voice, "Sir, shall we go straight home?"
Liam paused, his brows deeply furrowed, his face almost frozen. He quickly dialed a number. As soon as it connected, he demanded, "Where are you?"
The cold tone rang in Emma's ear.
Emma glanced at Elijah. Hearing that voice, she had a bad feeling. She replied cautiously, "I'm at The Waterfront, about to eat. Have you eaten?"
Emma wanted to say something else, but she only heard the sound of the line going dead.
That was it?
What the hell was Liam doing?
Was his arrogant streak acting up again?
Feeling frustrated, she put down her phone, her expression souring.
Elijah noticed she was distracted. He put a piece of meat in her bowl, hesitated for a long time, but didn't say anything.
Just then, the door to the private room was pushed open, and in walked the radiant and proud Mia Lewis.
Seeing Emma, she immediately got angry. "You wench! How dare you come here to eat without telling me? Are you trying to sneak around?"
As she finished speaking, she caught a glimpse of the man beside Emma.
Mia was instantly stunned. Since becoming the boss of The Waterfront, she had seen all kinds of handsome men—young idols, sophisticated types, charming older men. But someone as handsome as Elijah, with a hint of rebellion, was a first for Mia.
Why is my heart beating so fast?
Like a deer bumping. Is this legendary love at first sight?
Mia covered her chest, her eyes fixed on Elijah.
Elijah noticed her staring at him for five seconds. He casually raised his eyes, slightly tilted the corner of his mouth, and gave her a gentlemanly nod.
Mia suddenly felt a light in front of her eyes. She turned to look at Emma with joy. "I don't even want to talk about you anymore. The news of your marriage has caused a storm in the city. And now you dare to come to my place for a secret meeting with fresh meat? Aren't you afraid your wise and brave husband will find out and tear you apart?"
"Mia, can't you wish me well? Don't forget, I'm your biggest VIP customer here..." Emma said, pretending to be offended.
"Fine, you can introduce this handsome guy to me, and then you can eat here for free for the rest of your life." Mia sat down next to Emma and whispered in her ear.
"Haha... No way. The beauty you want is out of reach." Emma teased her on purpose.
Mia wasn't angry. Instead, she looked at Elijah across the table and turned on the charm. "Hello, my name is Mia Lewis. I'm Emma's good friend and the boss here."
Elijah is done for now. She's got her sights set on him.
Elijah could see the close relationship between her and Emma at a glance. He took a business card from his pocket and handed it to Mia with a smile. "Mia? That's a very special name. This is my card. Take care of it."
Emma put a large piece of meat in her mouth and didn't speak. She just watched like a spectator.
"Oh my god, are you a doctor at the city hospital at such a young age? Elijah Clark?" Mia exclaimed, holding the business card. Then she reached out and poked Emma, continuing to whisper, "You have such good resources, why didn't you introduce him to me? I've given you so many free meals for nothing. Don't you know the saying, 'Don't let good things go to outsiders'?"
Emma almost spat out the meat in her mouth. She patted her chest and whispered back, "You're an ungrateful wolf. After reading so many books, don't you know the saying, 'A rabbit doesn't eat the grass near its own nest'?"
