Emma trudged back to her office, feeling the weight of the day on her shoulders. She glanced at her phone. 4:40 PM.
She should call Elijah. It was better to arrange things in advance.
She dialed his number.
The phone rang for a moment before connecting. Elijah had been sound asleep, but seeing Emma's name on the screen jolted him awake. "Emma, are you off work?"
"Yeah, I left early today. What's going on? Were you still sleeping?" She could hear the drowsiness in his voice.
"I just got back from overseas. The jet lag hasn't worn off yet. Give me five minutes, and I'll come pick you up." Elijah fought through his exhaustion, his voice soft.
"Don't rush. If you're tired, get some more rest." Emma could hear how worn out he sounded and didn't want to push him.
"It's fine. I'll be there soon. Talk to you in a bit." He hung up and immediately got up to take a shower, the fatigue slowly washing away.
Meanwhile, on the top floor of the Pinnacle Corporation building, Christopher Martin walked into Liam Williams's office and found him wearing earbuds.
Since when did the boss have this habit?
Listening to music during work hours?
And more importantly, who listens to music with a face that dark?
After a brief pause, Christopher composed himself and said calmly, "Sir, after you sign these three documents, you can head out. I think you've been overworking yourself. You should pick up your wife early and get some rest."
Liam slowly removed the earbuds. At Christopher's words, his expression turned even darker.
Pick up his wife?
His wife was currently on an intimate phone call with another man.
That's right. What Liam had in his ears wasn't music at all. It was a listening device.
Ever since Elijah Clark had reappeared, Liam had planned to install a bug and GPS tracker on Emma's phone. He wanted to know exactly where Elijah was and what they were talking about.
So last night, Liam had taken Emma's phone into the study.
To set up all these high-tech gadgets.
Now, he had finally gotten what he wanted.
He had waited a long time for the target to appear, and now he could clearly hear every word they said.
But just now, when he heard Emma speaking so gently to Elijah, his heart had skipped several painful beats.
And Christopher had to walk in at that exact moment, saying, "Pick up your wife early and get some rest." It was like pouring fuel on the fire.
As God was his witness, Christopher had no idea what was going on.
He just thought things were fine between them at noon. Now, what kind of mood was the boss in?
Who had the ability to make Liam Williams look so cold in such a short time?
Seeing that Liam wasn't going to acknowledge him, Christopher put down the documents and left the room.
Liam was in a terrible mood.
He wished he could drag Emma home right this second.
But reason told him he couldn't do that. If he did, he would never find out Elijah's true background and identity.
And until now, he still wasn't sure if Emma was involved in all of this.
Liam's fists clenched unconsciously until he felt a sharp pain in his palm.
At The Waterfront.
Emma had brought Elijah here for dinner.
She didn't know why, but lately, she had started to enjoy the food here. Maybe it was because Liam had praised it so much last time.
But this morning, Liam had said he would bring her food from here, and she hadn't even touched it.
In the private dining room, Elijah sat across from her, his eyes fixed on her. They were as clear as spring water, deep and bright, carrying a hint of something more.
"You're not being honest with me. You disappeared for years without a word. It was like you just vanished from the face of the earth." Emma spoke directly, a hint of reproach in her voice.
Every time she thought about how he had left without saying goodbye, she couldn't help but feel angry. He had no idea how long she had worried about him. At the very least, he could have left a message.
"Emma, I'm sorry. I wanted to tell you something, but my father's business in Italy suddenly changed. Our whole family rushed back overnight. I'm sorry for worrying you."
In truth, ten years ago, before Elijah left, the only person he had gone to see was Emma. But it seemed fate wasn't on their side. Emma had gone shopping with Olivia that day and hadn't come back until late. Elijah was put on a plane by his father's men.
Since then, he had been studying and working in Italy.
After three years apart, when Elijah finally had a chance to return home, the first person he wanted to see was Emma. But when he went to find her, full of hope, she was already with Noah.
When Elijah saw the smile on Emma's face from a distance, he hesitated for a long time. Then he got on a plane and left that same day.
Not disturbing her was the only thing he could do.
How could he tell her about all the things that had happened in the past?
Emma pouted. "Elijah, I'm just glad you're okay. I was worried something had happened to your family!"
Time really did fly.
When she had parted ways with Elijah, she was just a little girl. Now, she was a married woman.
Ten years could completely change a person's appearance.
At first glance, Elijah was no longer that little boy who used to follow her and Olivia around every day.
Now, Elijah was handsome, with a sunny smile that occasionally appeared. He was mature, with a touch of nobility and elegance.
"Well, as soon as I got back, I saw the reports about you. You're married?" Elijah asked hesitantly.
"Yeah, I got married in a flash." Emma said with a hint of self-mockery.
"Why didn't you take more time to think about it? You should have gotten to know his character, his personality, his temper. Emma, I'm really worried you'll get hurt."
Back on the top floor.
The fire in Liam's eyes was burning brighter and brighter.
What kind of person did Emma marry? And what was wrong with his character?
And what was wrong with his personality? Looking at the entire city, could she find a man more patient than him?
The answer, of course, was no.
Christopher, who was still in the room, thought to himself, "Sir, you're a little too narcissistic. You're the most irritable person I've ever met, with the worst personality."
He coughed and quickly left the room.
