"Liam, you've lost your mind. My uncle's shoulder is hurt, but the ambulance will be here soon. He's not going to die."
Captain Reed came downstairs just in time to witness the scene. He couldn't help but want to stop it immediately.
"No one is coming. I owe Emma this. None of you are allowed to investigate after this is over, understand?"
There was no room for doubt in Liam Williams' voice, but his deep eyes remained fixed on Emma Johnson. Emma's hands trembled violently. In an instant, she tried to pull her hands back, but Liam caught them firmly, refusing to let her escape.
"Emma, if this bullet can make you forgive me, then even if it costs me my life, it's worth it."
Liam seemed to see straight into Emma's heart. Emma's eyes were still red, tears streaming down her face. By now, her father had been carried to the ambulance.
She couldn't say a word, but her eyes avoided Liam's gaze. The man's eyes hurt her, and the suffering in her heart tormented her.
Suddenly, she felt Liam tighten his grip on her hand for a moment, and almost instinctively, she jerked her arm.
But it couldn't stop the sound of the gunshot. The bullet ultimately missed his heart. Liam's chest was hit, and Emma's gun fell to the floor. She stared at Liam, who was now kneeling on the ground. His face seemed to have lost all color in an instant, but his eyes were still fixed on Emma.
Emma watched as his chest began to stain with bright red, like flowers blooming in hell—enchanting, yet cruel.
She saw Liam's pale lips move as if he wanted to say something, but she couldn't hear a thing. She watched as a few police officers carried him into the ambulance.
Captain Reed looked at Emma, standing there in a daze. He wanted to say something to her, but seeing her face, he couldn't bear to say another word. So, with a deep sigh, he left.
Emma sat down on the floor, her chest burning painfully. Tears fell like beads of beans onto the ground, her lips curling into a bitter smile.
Even if Liam had shot himself in the chest, the fact remained that he had hurt her father. Between them, there was no going back.
James Johnson was eventually saved, but Liam's condition was even more critical. He narrowly escaped death, but he didn't actually lose his life.
It wasn't until the next day that Amelia White learned Liam was in a coma. But by then, Liam had already woken up and was lying in bed, giving instructions to Christopher Martin.
"Brother, what happened to you? Who could have hurt you this badly?"
Amelia's tears fell like rain, streaming down her face. If it weren't for the terrible look on Liam's face, she would have jumped on him without a second thought.
"I'm fine now. Don't tell the old man."
Liam comforted Amelia with a faint smile.
"No, I haven't. But it won't be long before he finds out."
Amelia said through her tears.
"Keep it quiet as long as you can."
After that, Liam seemed a bit tired. Amelia and Christopher left the ward. As soon as they stepped out, Amelia immediately asked Christopher what had happened. Christopher knew Liam wouldn't want anyone else to know, so even though he knew the details from the police, he didn't intend to tell Amelia.
Amelia glared at him angrily. Did he think she wouldn't find out just because he wouldn't tell her?
Soon, Captain Reed came to see Liam. Amelia knew Captain Reed wouldn't tell her either, so she asked one of the nearby police officers. The officer didn't know about the conflict between Amelia and Emma, so he told Amelia everything that had happened the night before.
After hearing the story, Amelia's eyes seemed to blaze with fire. Her heart kept cursing that bitch.
Before the officer could react, Amelia stormed off like a gust of wind. Christopher and Captain Reed were in the middle of a conversation and didn't realize what had happened until they saw Amelia leave. They couldn't help but ask the officer what he had said to her.
The officer scratched the back of his head and repeated what he had just told Amelia. Their faces immediately changed.
"How could you be so careless?"
Captain Reed scolded the officer angrily, but the officer was confused. He had no idea what he had done wrong.
Christopher and Captain Reed exchanged glances, guessing where Amelia was headed. Without another word, they hurried after her.
At that moment, Emma and her mother were feeding her father porridge in his ward. James Johnson's shoulder was injured, but fortunately, it wasn't a critical area. The doctor said that after a few months, his arm would be able to move normally again.
This brought great relief to Emma and her mother. James sighed as he thought about what had happened the night before.
"Well, I never thought something like this would happen to me in my lifetime. Daughter, it seems someone doesn't want you to be happy." James then said he suspected Liam had been set up as well, and there was no way to recognize the situation at the time. Emma didn't seem surprised by her father's defense of Liam. She sighed, unsure of what to feel.
But her resentment toward Liam had never faded.
"Emma Johnson, come out here!"
"Miss, this is a hospital ward. Please keep your voice down."
Amelia's angry voice and a nurse's劝阻 came from outside. Emma heard Amelia's arrogant shout and couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. She calmed her parents, asking them to stay in the ward, then got up and left.
"Is our daughter going to be okay?"
James asked uneasily.
"Don't worry. Our daughter has handled several people before. There's no way she'll suffer. Miss Amelia needs to learn a lesson. Our daughter is no longer her sister-in-law, so there's no need to let her get away with it."
Emma's mother continued feeding her father porridge as if nothing had happened. James stopped asking and drank the porridge specially made for him by his wife.
Emma walked out of the ward and saw Amelia, who was being stopped by the nurse. At that moment, Amelia's eyes were bloodshot. The moment she saw Emma, a cold light flashed in her eyes, as if she wished she could tear Emma apart. Her gaze was dark and fierce.
"This is a hospital. You're supposed to be a proper young lady, but you're shouting like a shrew. I'm truly impressed."
Emma's eyes were cold, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
