Elijah Clark was absolutely certain when he gave Emma Johnson his promise.
"Because if you can remember anything about that person, chances are nine out of ten that their memory has already returned."
Emma's hand, holding her chopsticks, tightened involuntarily. Then, regaining her composure, she looked at Elijah and nodded.
"I understand."
Elijah had expected Emma to ask him more questions, but she didn't pursue the topic any further. She said nothing about Liam Williams either, which secretly disappointed him. It seemed that in Emma's heart, there were some things she would never truly open up about.
After dinner, Emma drove Elijah back to the hospital. After saying goodbye to her at the entrance, Elijah turned around and saw Emilia Clark just coming out of the building.
"That car looks like it belongs to Emma. Elijah, did you just have dinner with her?"
Emilia asked curiously.
"Yeah. It's been a while since we last ate together."
Elijah replied with a smile.
"Oh, I almost could have asked Emma for a ride. Looks like I'll have to take a taxi home instead."
A look of regret crossed Emilia's face. Elijah walked her to the curb, watched her get into a cab, and then returned to the hospital.
Emma drove back to Sunrise Manor. By the time she arrived, Liam Williams and his family had already finished their meal.
"Sister-in-law, you're back. I thought you'd be out longer."
Amelia White greeted Emma with a sweet smile. But Emma sensed something else hidden behind that smile. Perhaps it was because of what she had confirmed with Elijah this evening that she could no longer look at Amelia with simple eyes.
"Yeah, I came back early. I'm a bit tired. I'm going upstairs."
Emma's voice was cold. Amelia was momentarily taken aback by her distant attitude. By the time she turned around, Emma had already disappeared up the stairs.
"Brother, is she okay?"
Amelia came back and looked at Liam with a puzzled expression. But she found him staring intently in the direction Emma had gone, his dark eyes deep and unreadable. He didn't even seem to hear her. Amelia couldn't help but purse her lips, a cold glint flashing in her eyes.
Emma didn't go to bed early that night. When Liam came out of his study, she was still half-sitting on the bed, waiting for him.
"Still awake at this hour?"
When Liam entered the bedroom, he saw the two bedside lamps were on. Emma had just put aside a fashion magazine. He didn't believe she was waiting for him, but he couldn't help asking.
"Liam, if I said I wanted to move back to my apartment, would you agree?"
Emma's clear eyes fixed on the handsome man before her. There was a light in her eyes that he couldn't quite understand.
"Why would you say that all of a sudden? Isn't Sunrise Manor comfortable enough?"
Liam's answer didn't surprise Emma, but it still disappointed her. She had wanted to tell him about her doubts, but she couldn't bring herself to say the words. She didn't know how to talk to him about it.
In Emma's heart, she was still an outsider in the Williams family. In a few months, her marriage to Liam would come to an end, but Amelia would always be his family. The emotional bond between them would naturally be deeper than what he shared with her. Even if she told him, what could Liam really do?
The answer was obvious. Liam wouldn't do anything to Amelia. He would probably just tell her to endure it. Even if he had scolded Amelia for her sake before, it was clear he regretted it this time.
Should she patiently pretend everything was fine until their one-year contract expired, or should she confront him? Emma wrestled with the question for a long time before reluctantly choosing the former.
Maybe she didn't have a choice at all.
The next morning, instead of getting into Liam's car, Emma drove her white BMW to the company. Watching the white car pull away, Liam unconsciously tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
His obsidian eyes grew even darker.
"Emma, if you had left the hospital a little later yesterday when you parted ways with Elijah, I could have caught a ride with you."
Emilia saw Emma step out of the elevator and said with a smile on her quiet face.
"Sure. I'll call you next time."
Emma smiled at Emilia, then opened the door to her office and went inside. Emilia then noticed Liam standing behind Emma. At that moment, the handsome man seemed to be radiating a cold, oppressive aura that made Emilia shiver involuntarily. She greeted him with a trembling voice. But Liam didn't even acknowledge her. He pushed the door open and walked straight in.
Seeing the cold, handsome profile of the man, a strange smile involuntarily curled at the corner of Emilia's lips.
"You went to see Elijah last night?"
Liam closed the door, his eyes fixed on Emma's back, his voice dark and sinister.
Emma paused for a moment, sighing silently to herself. From the moment Emilia had spoken, she had already guessed how Liam would react.
"Yes, I went to see him yesterday."
Emma admitted frankly. There was no point in lying. Liam would find out anyway if he wanted to.
A thick, dark cloud brewed in Liam's eyes. He stared at the woman's face, which looked as if nothing had happened. A flame burned in his chest, threatening to consume his insides.
"You know I don't like you going to him. Why do you always have to go against me?"
Liam's voice grew colder and colder. Emma looked at him thoughtfully before speaking slowly.
"Liam, you know Elijah has been my friend since we were kids. I can't just ignore him."
"Is that all?"
Liam sneered coldly. "Emma Johnson, do you think everyone else is a fool?"
Emma's eyes widened in surprise. She hadn't expected Liam to say something like that out of nowhere.
"What do you mean? Haven't I made myself clear before?"
"Whether you've made yourself clear or not, only you know that."
Liam's eyes were full of sarcasm, like a sharp sword suddenly stabbing into Emma's heart. The mockery in his gaze made her feel a deep, aching sadness.
"Emma, my patience has its limits. Don't think you can keep testing my boundaries. I don't care about your past, but right now, please remember that you are Mrs. Williams. As long as you are Mrs. Williams, you should do your duty, shouldn't you?"
