"I'll take you back now."
Liam felt the woman in his arms growing warm, her clothes damp from the rain. He feared she might catch a fever. Worried that Emma's condition would worsen if this continued, he quickly carried her away from there.
Emma tried to open her eyes, but the harder she tried, the more her head throbbed. She finally slipped completely into darkness, as if she heard a familiar voice calling her name with burning intensity, but she couldn't be certain.
Elijah thought that if Liam weren't holding Emma, he would teach Liam a lesson. Even though he knew Liam was capable, he loved Emma deeply.
"Emma has been in trouble one after another since she's been with you. Liam, if you're her husband, don't let her fall into danger again."
Liam carefully placed Emma on the bed, while Elijah stared at him with clenched fists.
But Liam paid him no attention. His eyes were fixed on Emma, though his words were directed at Christopher.
"Christopher, please step out. I need to change Emma's clothes."
When Elijah heard Liam say this, his eyes turned as cold as ice. But as soon as his gaze fell on the bed and Emma's closed eyes, even if he was reluctant, he had to control his emotions. Without another word, he left the ward.
Right now, Emma's health was the top priority. If she didn't change out of her wet clothes in time, her condition would worsen.
For now, he could only wait until Liam had changed her clothes. He was the only doctor here, the only one who could see Emma. Liam had no choice.
"Mom, it hurts."
As Liam changed Emma's clothes, he heard her murmur this vaguely. He realized she might be delirious, starting to talk nonsense.
Thinking of this, Liam's eyes turned cold. If not for that crazy woman, Emma wouldn't be suffering like this.
He would never let this matter go.
After changing Emma's clothes, Liam let Elijah back in. After all, it would take some time for Dr. Moore to arrive, which would delay Emma's treatment. So even if he was reluctant, Liam still needed to entrust Emma to Elijah, who had the authority of a doctor.
Elijah took Emma's temperature. She had a high fever. Fortunately, Liam had prepared everything well during the autumn trip. First, he gave Emma some medicine. Then he called the hospital and asked someone to exchange the medicine bottle and send it over, so Emma's condition wouldn't worsen.
But he looked at the confused Emma, who was starting to fuss. At this point, Emma was unconscious, and getting her to take medicine was almost harder than reaching heaven.
"Give me the medicine."
Liam took the cold medicine from Elijah's hand. Before Elijah could react, he put the medicine in his mouth and took a sip of water. Then he bent down and pressed his lips against Emma's soft, bloodless lips, easily prying open her teeth and sending the medicine in.
Emma furrowed her brow, confused, trying to spit out the bitter pill. But how could Liam give her a chance? He kissed her, letting the bitter pill dissolve in their mouths. Finally, Emma swallowed the pill.
Elijah watched all this with pained eyes. This was the first time he had clearly seen such an intimate scene between Emma and Liam. It was just a matter of circumstances.
But he knew they usually did things like this. Otherwise, how could Liam kiss so naturally?
And Christopher caught the look of anguish on Elijah's face, thinking, Is it really okay for the boss to show his affection like this? I'm already a huge light bulb, and with Elijah here, I'm afraid the boss will hate me even more.
Liam's phone rang at that moment. He saw the caller ID and left the room.
"Brother Elijah, is Emma okay?"
Emilia's weak, worried voice came through the phone.
"She's fine. Don't worry."
Elijah didn't tell Emilia about Emma's high fever. After all, she had fainted before, and she was very weak now.
"Really? That's great. I'm relieved now."
"Get some rest."
"Okay, Brother Elijah."
When she hung up, Emilia's voice sounded much more relaxed.
Elijah put his phone back in his pocket, and then he saw Liam come out of the room. Their eyes met briefly in the air, and Christopher, who came out after them, felt the surrounding air turn cold, almost seeping into his bones.
Then they quickly ignored each other. Liam ordered someone to take Elijah to the guest room to rest, and to call him when the hospital sent the medicine box. Elijah could see that Liam was going to interrogate the woman. Although he wanted to go, he also knew Liam wouldn't agree to him coming along.
He could see that Liam also cared about Emma. He believed Liam could handle this matter well. So Elijah left for the time being.
"Sir, the woman has been detained in an empty guest room by Captain Reed's team. Knowing that you would personally interrogate her, Captain Reed didn't immediately take her back to the station."
Christopher followed Liam and reported to him.
Liam answered faintly, which was an acknowledgment. Soon they arrived at the room where the crazy woman was being held. When they opened the door, they saw the woman with her hands shackled, pressed down on a chair by two police officers. She stared at Liam crazily, as if she would lose control at any moment and pounce on him.
"Captain Reed, what have you found out?"
Liam's eyes were on the woman, but his words were directed at Captain Reed, who was standing nearby.
"It's clear. This woman came from the psychiatric ward of Brookhaven General Hospital. Since her husband was sentenced to death six months ago, and she miscarried her baby due to emotional distress, she has been suffering from intermittent mental illness. Sometimes she's lucid, sometimes confused, so her family sent her to the hospital for treatment."
Captain Reed told Liam the information he had gathered.
"How did a crazy woman get out of the hospital?"
Liam stared at the woman intently, momentarily suspecting Elijah. But he also knew that Elijah's concern for Emma was never fake. He would target Liam, but not Emma.
So this assumption was false.
