Chapter 89

Evelyn stared at Alexander’s retreating back, trying to figure out what he meant.

She realized her IQ and his were on completely different levels.

Even basic communication felt like a puzzle.

Every time he said something, she had to analyze it for hidden meanings.

Was there a subtext?

A trap?

She needed to be absolutely sure she understood him correctly.

Sighing, she thought to herself, being Mrs. Sterling is exhausting!

While Alexander showered, Evelyn went to wash the rice and start the porridge.

Then she went to take her own shower.

When she finished washing and changed clothes, she walked out of the bedroom.

She saw Alexander cooking vegetables in the kitchen.

Standing in front of the stove, his tall figure looked striking.

It was almost sexy.

Except for on TV, Evelyn had never seen a man cook.

Her own father never even stepped foot in the kitchen.

So seeing Alexander cook felt novel and pleasant.

Alexander looked at her. “What are you doing standing there like a statue?”

“Nothing!” Evelyn shook her head, embarrassed, and walked into the kitchen.

“Where’s our vinegar?” Alexander asked.

“Our vinegar?” Evelyn was stunned by those words.

Our—

Our vinegar!

It sounded so intimate!

“Didn’t you buy it?” Alexander turned to look at her.

“Yes, I did. I think I left it on the dining table last time with the soy sauce,” Evelyn replied, snapping back to reality. She turned to get the vinegar.

As she picked up the bottle, she muttered to herself, “Our vinegar!”

Then she blushed, feeling silly.

She turned around and handed the bottle to Alexander.

That morning, Evelyn had a great appetite. She ate two bowls of porridge and finished all the dishes.

Anyone watching would think she hadn’t eaten dinner last night.

Alexander asked if she wanted him to make her a sandwich.

Evelyn shook her head. “I’m full!”

Alexander nodded and got up from the table.

Evelyn started clearing the dishes.

It was Sunday, no classes. She could take her time.

Alexander came out of the bedroom, changed into a suit, ready to go out.

“Do you have to work today?” Evelyn asked, surprised.

“I need to handle some things at the company. What are your plans?” Alexander looked down at her.

“Just review. I have two more exams next week,” Evelyn answered honestly.

“Then come to the company with me,” Alexander said, turning and walking into the study.

Evelyn stared at his back, not reacting.

After a moment, she slowly answered, “Oh!”

Then she went into the bedroom to grab her bag and textbooks.

She wondered what she was supposed to do at the company while he worked overtime.

Evelyn followed Alexander out of the apartment and downstairs.

“Alexander, what am I going to do at the company?” she asked curiously.

“Won’t you get bored alone in the apartment?” he glanced at her.

“Not really. I can read!” Evelyn smiled.

“You can review at the company in the morning. In the afternoon, we’ll go out for a walk.”

“But you have to work. Won’t I disturb you?”

“I’m not working today.”

“Oh!” Evelyn answered after a long pause.

Then Alexander drove to the company and went upstairs.

The main office area was quiet.

Evelyn thought, if only she could work here someday.

The next second, she quickly dismissed the idea. This was Alexander’s territory.

Alexander led Evelyn directly into his office.

Evelyn looked around. His office was spacious and had a huge LED screen, but nothing else special.

“What would you like to drink?” Alexander took off his jacket and hung it on the rack.

“Just water is fine,” Evelyn said, looking around.

“Can you make coffee?” Alexander asked again.

“No. Do you want some?” Evelyn shook her head.

Alexander went back to his seat. “I’ll have Assistant Miller teach you later.”

“Please teach me. Once I learn, I can make it for you,” Evelyn smiled.

Alexander looked at her, not directly responding. He seemed to be considering the idea.

Finally, he got up and walked over.

“Let’s go.”

Evelyn put down her schoolbag and followed Alexander out of the office to the break room.

In the break room, Alexander taught Evelyn how to use the coffee machine to brew a pot.

Evelyn studied hard.

Her eyes fell on his fingers, and she soon got distracted.

A man’s charm was often in the details. Like a pair of slender fingers and nimble hands.

Evelyn looked at Alexander’s hand and thought he could be a hand model.

“Evelyn—”

“Huh?” Evelyn snapped back.

“Do you always daydream in class?” Alexander looked at her.

“What do you mean?” Evelyn blinked.

“Getting distracted.”

“No, I’m serious in class!”

“What did I just say?”

“...” Evelyn was embarrassed.

She had been staring at his hand and hadn’t paid attention to what he said.

Alexander looked at her innocent expression.

Finally, he sighed. “I’m really defeated by you.”

Alexander poured half a cup and handed it to her. “Taste it. What do you think?”

“It smells good!” Evelyn said contentedly, inhaling the coffee aroma.

Alexander nodded.

Evelyn blew on it and took a sip. The next second, she frowned and groaned. “It’s so bitter—”

“You’ll get used to it. If it’s still too bitter, there’s sugar and cream in the cupboard. Add it yourself,” Alexander said, raising an eyebrow. He poured a cup and walked out of the break room.

Evelyn shook her head almost reflexively, still reeling from the bitter taste.

She couldn’t understand why Alexander liked drinking such bitter stuff. It was like drinking herbal medicine.

Everyone’s tastes were different, she guessed.

Evelyn took out the sugar and cream from the cupboard. She put the cream back and only added sugar.

After that bitter taste, she wanted to fill it with sugar.

Finally, she walked out of the break room with half a cup of coffee that had five cubes of sugar in it.

Alexander was already busy working.

Evelyn put the coffee on the coffee table and took out her textbook to review.

After reviewing for a while, she remembered the coffee. She picked it up and took a tiny sip.

Remembering the bitterness, she only took a small sip.

Her face still scrunched up.

What was this? It was bitter, sweet, and strange.

She couldn’t spit it out. She forced herself to swallow and quickly put the coffee back on the table.

It wasn’t a taste she liked.

Evelyn stuck out her tongue, trying to get rid of the weird taste. She glanced at Alexander.

He seemed to be looking at her.

She turned her head and met his eyes. His gaze was on her, his face expressionless.

Evelyn was embarrassed. She quickly pulled her tongue back in and giggled nervously.

Then she lowered her head, picked up her book, and pretended to be serious.

The next second, she realized she was holding the book upside down.

She quickly turned it right, her face turning red.

Alas, she had lost all her dignity.
