“College students can get married as long as they’re old enough, right?” Amelia continued.
“Yes. Why are you asking this all of a sudden, Mom?” William asked, confused.
Amelia winked at Victoria.
Victoria sat up straight, unwilling to play the bad cop again.
“Evie, here’s the thing,” she said.
“Someone is willing to give ten million dollars to help Dad’s company get through this.”
“But there’s one condition.”
She hated being the one to say this every time.
“What condition?” Evie asked eagerly.
Such a generous person existed!
The world was still beautiful!
“Our two families are going to form a marriage alliance,” Victoria answered.
“Marriage?” Evie heard the word and immediately thought of the romance novels Emily had been reading lately. She burst out laughing. “Don’t tell me they want you to marry their young master or something, so they’ll help Dad out.”
“You’re right. But it’s not me who’s getting married. It’s you.”
“They’ll use the money as a dowry to save Dad’s company,” Victoria explained.
“Why me?” Evie’s eyes went wide with shock.
She hadn’t even had her first boyfriend yet. How could she jump straight to marriage?
It felt like skipping kindergarten and going straight to university.
That was insane!
“Or do you think they’d want me?” Victoria stared at Evie.
“I didn’t even graduate from a decent university.”
“Would anyone like me?”
“Besides, I already have a fiancé. Are you going to make me a bigamist?” Victoria asked.
“Sister, since when did you have a fiancé?” Evie asked, delighted.
She had only been away from home for half a month. Her family was going bankrupt, and her sister had a fiancé?
It wasn’t that she couldn’t keep up. The world was changing too fast!
“Last time you had your midterms, I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to distract you,” Victoria lied through her teeth.
The real issue wasn’t that. Evie just didn’t want to believe it.
“Sister, that’s really kind of you. But an engagement is such a big deal—” Evie said seriously.
“When I get married, I’ll let you know. Don’t worry.” Victoria resisted the urge to roll her eyes. “Right now, we’re talking about you. Don’t change the subject!”
“Oh, what about me?” Evie had completely forgotten the main topic after hearing about her sister’s engagement.
“Our two families are going to form a marriage alliance. You have to marry into their family. Then they’ll give ten million to help Dad’s company through this crisis.” Victoria repeated the story impatiently.
“But I haven’t even met him. How can I marry him?” Evie finally remembered the point of the discussion.
This wasn’t ancient times, where you didn’t know what your spouse looked like until your wedding day.
And it was all happening so suddenly!
She didn’t understand what was going on!
“Evie, if you agree, Dad will arrange it,” William said gently.
“The Sterling family is a big family.”
“When you marry into it, you’ll be their daughter-in-law.”
“They won’t treat you badly. It’s a good arrangement.”
“Dad, if I don’t marry him, they won’t help us, right?” Evie asked hesitantly.
“If you don’t marry him, our family will go bankrupt,” Victoria answered bluntly.
“But I haven’t even had my first love!” Evie muttered after a long silence.
The shock was so great that she was completely confused.
