"The song I sang was really beautiful!" Alexander Sterling said softly.
"Thank you! Would Mr. Sterling like to have a candlelit dinner with Mrs. Sterling now?" Evelyn asked with a smile.
"It would be my honor, Mrs. Sterling!" Alexander replied, taking her hand and leading her toward the dining room.
Candles flickered on the table.
Evelyn had prepared dinner. It wasn't Western food. It was Chinese. But every dish was Alexander's favorite.
Alexander pulled out her chair. Once she sat, he took his seat.
"Last time I was on a business trip, I told Mr. Hudson my wife was an amazing cook," he said. "I wasn't exaggerating at all!"
Evelyn laughed. "Try it first. If it's good, I'll cook a feast when Mr. and Mrs. Hudson visit us."
"Now I regret it. I don't want them coming over to eat your cooking!" Alexander replied, sounding almost childish.
Evelyn laughed even harder. "Then I'll just cook something worse when they come!"
Alexander looked at her. His face was full of smiles. His eyes were full of tenderness.
"Mr. Sterling, please start. I learned to cook two new dishes. You're the first to taste them," Evelyn said, picking up her chopsticks.
"I'm so happy!" Alexander responded.
How could he not see? These two dishes were Iris Hart's specialties. They were his favorites before.
Iris was gone. Now Evelyn cooked them for him.
Alexander ate the food Evelyn had made. His heart felt a little sad. Then it felt warm. It was a strange, complicated feeling.
"Evelyn, I'm so lucky to have married you," Alexander said, raising his wine glass.
"I'm honored to have met you too, Mr. Sterling!" Evelyn raised her juice glass. She clinked it against his and smiled.
"No matter how good I am, it's because of you," Alexander replied.
Evelyn laughed. "I'll take that compliment!"
She finished her juice.
Alexander drank his wine too.
That night, Evelyn showed Alexander what true romance really meant.
It wasn't about standing in the rain. It wasn't about doing something dramatic.
It was about trying to fulfill the other person's real needs.
Alexander lacked a sense of security. Evelyn used her actions to make him understand. The most romantic thing was growing old together. When they were too old to go anywhere, they would sit on a rocking chair and sway slowly.
She also wanted him to understand that marriage needed two people to work together. As long as husband and wife were united, no storm could tear them apart. Nothing could separate them except death.
Later, Alexander went to inspect a branch office. As he passed a store, he heard music playing inside. He stopped immediately.
The people following him thought something was wrong. They exchanged confused glances.
Then Alexander asked, "What's the name of this song?"
Everyone looked at each other. A timid new employee finally replied, "The Queen of Home."
Alexander found the song's name. He looked up the lyrics. Then he truly understood the song Evelyn had played and sung that day.
She used this song to tell him something. She would always be his good wife. She would be the queen of his home.
Alexander returned to Sterling Manor from his business trip. Evelyn was arranging a bunch of roses she had just cut from the garden.
She was over eight months pregnant. Her face and belly looked rounder. But her body hadn't gained much weight.
Even from behind, you could barely tell she was pregnant.
Alexander walked over and wrapped his arms around her waist.
Evelyn froze for a moment. Then she laughed the next second. "You're back!"
She didn't even need to turn around to know who it was.
"Yeah," Alexander said, resting his head on her shoulder.
"I thought you were coming back tomorrow!" Evelyn said, placing some roses into a vase.
"I finished early, so I came back," Alexander replied.
The truth was, after hearing that song, he wanted to come home immediately.
In the end, he held himself back. He finished his work. Then he rushed back without stopping.
"You haven't slept well these days, have you? Go take a bath and rest. I'll make dinner."
"No, I'll make dinner," Alexander replied.
"Aren't you tired?"
"No. I want to sing you a song," Alexander said, hugging her.
"Oh? Sing it then!" Evelyn laughed.
She wondered what medicine he had taken wrong on his trip.
Alexander hummed the tune in her ear.
Evelyn smiled at first. She didn't know what he was singing. She couldn't understand a word. But then she recognized the melody. She froze.
After Alexander finished humming, Evelyn turned her head. Tears filled her eyes.
"Your pronunciation is so bad. I couldn't tell what it was!" Evelyn said, her voice choked.
"I'll sing it better next time. Evelyn, I know this song now," Alexander said, staring into her eyes.
"I wish I didn't know it. You're a terrible singer!" Evelyn finished speaking and bit her lip.
Alexander smiled. He kissed her eyes. Then he kissed her lips.
"No one is more important than you. Making you happy is the goal of my life."
That was what Alexander said to Evelyn. It was also his response to the song she had sung.
Later, after his bath, Alexander went downstairs to cook dinner.
Evelyn helped him pick the vegetables.
They talked and laughed. The food almost burned.
Lily Thompson didn't dare disturb them. She went to play with the young master instead.
It was a moment that made single people feel left out.
That night, Alexander accompanied Evelyn for a walk in the garden.
Evelyn felt her waist was a little sore. She told Alexander she didn't want to walk today.
Alexander asked if she was uncomfortable.
She said her waist was just a little sore. Nothing to worry about.
Alexander helped her back to Sterling Manor first.
In the middle of the night, Evelyn couldn't bear the soreness anymore. Her stomach started to ache. She realized she might be going into labor.
So she woke Alexander up. "Alexander, I think I'm having the baby."
"Huh?" Alexander had just woken up. He was still confused. He froze for a moment. Then he jumped up.
He called an ambulance. He called his parents to tell them. He called Lily Thompson to bring the maternity bag.
Evelyn lay on the bed. She endured the abdominal pain. She watched Alexander do all these things in an orderly way.
After Alexander made the calls, he grabbed clothes from the dressing room. He helped her put them on. Then he carried her downstairs.
Only Evelyn knew how nervous Alexander was. His forehead was sweating. His face was pale.
"Alexander, I'll be fine," Evelyn comforted him.
"I know," Alexander said, looking down at her.
Evelyn smiled at him. But tears still fell from her eyes.
"If it hurts, scream," Alexander said, looking down at her.
Evelyn nodded. But she didn't make a sound. She felt Alexander was more nervous than she was. He held her hand so tightly it hurt.
