"Mom, you're playing mahjong!" Evelyn answered awkwardly.
"Well, I play every now and then..." Amelia Vance replied while shuffling tiles.
"Mom, I'm divorced from Alexander now!"
"Oh, so you're divorced. So what..."
"Mom, you're not mad!" Evelyn couldn't believe her ears.
"Of course I'm mad. You're already divorced." Her mother snapped back without missing a beat.
Evelyn hadn't expected her mother to be so open-minded this time. She felt a sudden rush of excitement.
"Thank you, Mom. You're the best. I'll move back home tomorrow!"
"Not tomorrow. I need to pick an auspicious day first. Then you can move back!" Her mother answered from the other end of the line.
Evelyn's face went blank.
She got divorced and now wanted to move back to her parents' house. Her mother told her to wait for a lucky day.
What kind of nonsense was this?
But she had no choice but to agree. As they said, when you live under someone else's roof, you have to bow your head.
Evelyn had no other option.
After hanging up, she sat on the sofa, staring into space.
Once she moved out of here, she would have nothing to do with the Sterling family or Alexander anymore.
Thinking about the time she spent living here, it was all just self-deception.
But people were like that. To start a new life, you had to let go.
Just like she didn't want to live a life full of suspicion anymore. She had to release her feelings for Alexander.
Evelyn finally sighed. She went into the bedroom to take a shower and went to bed early.
When she came out of the bathroom, she saw Alexander sitting on the sofa. A bottle of red wine and two goblets sat on the small table.
"Let's celebrate. We're getting divorced!" Alexander looked at Evelyn and explained.
"There's nothing to celebrate!" Evelyn replied coldly.
"You got what you wanted. Isn't that the best reason to celebrate?" Alexander said with a smile. "I'm kidding. Even if we can't be husband and wife, we can still be friends, right?
We haven't had a drink and a chat like this in a long time."
Evelyn said nothing. She walked over and sat down beside Alexander.
"Evelyn, take good care of yourself from now on." Alexander poured two glasses of red wine and handed one to her.
"You take care of yourself too. Don't always be so busy that you forget to eat. And don't drink too much at business dinners." Evelyn took the glass and said.
In the end, there were some people she just couldn't stop worrying about.
"Well, I'll have to take care of myself now that you won't be around to do it anymore!" Alexander replied.
"... " Evelyn didn't answer for a long time.
Alexander clinked his glass with hers.
"I'll finish mine. You can drink at your own pace."
"Let's both drink at our own pace." Evelyn responded, then took a small sip of the red wine.
Her heart felt a little heavy.
"Evelyn, do you remember the first time we met?" Alexander put down his glass, picked up the bottle, and poured himself another.
"I remember!" Evelyn answered quietly.
"Tell me. What were you thinking back then?"
"I was treating a dead horse as if it were still alive!" Evelyn answered honestly.
Alexander burst out laughing.
"Was I really that bad in your eyes? Oh, I almost forgot. You thought I was some old, ugly gay guy."
"That was just a misunderstanding!" Evelyn replied awkwardly.
"So what did you actually think when you saw me?"
"That day, I wasn't wearing my glasses. I couldn't see clearly. I just thought you were very tall, and..."
"And what?" Alexander asked.
"And your hands were big and warm."
Alexander smiled.
"My impression of you back then was...
Was this little girl really my wife?
I felt a little guilty. You looked so small!"
"I was twenty years old back then!" Evelyn emphasized.
"I know. But you looked like a teenager in that photo!" Alexander replied.
"What photo?" Evelyn asked, confused.
"Mom showed me your picture. After I saw it, I agreed to the marriage."
"I don't know which photo that is. I rarely take pictures!"
"That photo must have been taken earlier. You looked very young!"
"Since I looked so young in the photo, why did you agree to such a marriage?" Evelyn asked.
"Maybe I have a thing for younger girls!" Alexander laughed at himself.
Evelyn looked at Alexander. She didn't know how to respond.
"Before, I didn't really believe in fate. I believed that if I wanted something, I had to fight for it. Now I believe in it.
Otherwise, think about it. There are so many girls more beautiful than you. How did I end up falling for you?
And I hadn't even seen you in person. I just agreed to marry you directly!" Alexander continued.
"Yes, fate is strange.
If my family hadn't almost gone bankrupt, I don't think any of this would have happened to me!" Evelyn followed up.
"I almost forgot. You still owe me ten million!" Alexander said, as if he had just remembered.
"I already paid it back with the house!" Evelyn said quickly.
"What house? When?" Alexander looked confused.
"Six months ago. I told you I gave you a check!"
"Oh, where did I put that money? I forgot to have the finance department record it. I'll make it up to you tomorrow!" Alexander muttered to himself.
"No, no. That money is yours!"
"Isn't all my money yours now? What does the divorce agreement say? After the divorce, all of the man's personal property belongs to the woman. It's like I'm leaving the house empty-handed. That ten million is your property." Alexander replied seriously.
"I don't actually need that money!" Evelyn said quietly, taking another sip of wine.
"It doesn't matter if you don't need it. Just keep it. With that money, you won't have to worry about finding a better husband in the future!"
"If the other person is only interested in my money, what's the point of such a marriage? I'd rather be alone and at peace." Evelyn shrugged and responded indifferently.
"See, we're having such a good time right now. And you're about to divorce me. I think it'll be hard for you to find a man more interesting than me in the future." Alexander continued.
Evelyn looked up at Alexander and couldn't help but laugh.
"Don't be so conceited, okay?"
"It's not conceit. It's the truth. Evelyn, be honest. Can you find a better, more handsome, and more lovable man than me in the future?" Alexander looked at Evelyn and asked.
Evelyn met his gaze. After a moment, she replied, "You're very good. Really. I'm not likely to find a better man than you in the future."
"In that case, why get divorced?" Alexander asked again.
"Maybe it's just not meant to be!" Evelyn lowered her head and answered softly.
