The nurse smiled and nodded.
Evelyn stared at Alexander with a hint of frustration, forgetting the pain from the dressing change.
The nurse quickly finished applying the medicine and wrapped the bandage again.
“Mrs. Sterling’s wound shows some minor bleeding today. We need to be careful. No sudden movements, especially around the abdomen. Don’t strain or pull the wound,” the nurse explained.
“Got it. I’ll be careful. Thank you,” Alexander replied.
The nurse smiled again and walked out of the ward with her supplies.
Back at the nurses’ station, she naturally started spreading the word about Mr. Sterling’s devotion to his wife.
“You know, some men are just different. How can they be so unlike each other?” one nurse said, resting her chin on her hand.
“Exactly. The key is, he’s rich, handsome, and gentle. How did Mrs. Sterling get so lucky? I wonder how many lifetimes it took to earn such a blessing!” another nurse chimed in.
“Ha ha, I’m so envious and jealous!”
“Busy as always! You’re all talking about Mr. and Mrs. Sterling again!” another nurse returned to the station with a smile.
“Yeah, ever since Mrs. Sterling was admitted, our station has been buzzing.”
“The thing is, we’re all starting to believe in love again!”
They gossiped away, but never stopped working. The station was just livelier than usual.
After the dressing change, Alexander passed the soup and continued feeding Evelyn.
Evelyn wanted to drink it herself, but Alexander said, “The nurse just told us to be careful with your wound.”
“Drinking soup isn’t a violent action!” Evelyn replied, annoyed.
“Evelyn, as long as we’re not divorced for a single day, I’m your husband. I have the responsibility to take care of you. Even if we do divorce later, you’re still the mother of my son. I still have the obligation to look after you,” Alexander said seriously.
“If we divorce, we’ll have nothing to do with each other!” Evelyn muttered.
“That still makes you my ex-wife. And an ex-wife is still a wife,” Alexander replied, lowering his head.
“…” Evelyn was speechless for a long time.
She was too lazy to argue with Alexander. After eating, she’d just rest as soon as possible.
After feeding Evelyn, Alexander went to fill a basin of warm water to help her wash her face and hands.
“I can do it myself!”
“Let me do it. You’re clumsy. You’ll pull the wound later!”
“Then let the nurse do it!” Evelyn had to give in.
“Evelyn, we’re not divorced yet!” Alexander stared at her.
“I know. Don’t keep saying that like it’s a catchphrase!” Evelyn replied, frustrated.
Alexander was both angry and amused.
“Stop fussing. Let me clean you up properly, and then you can rest early.”
“Are you going back to rest tonight?” Evelyn asked again.
“I’ll sleep here tonight.”
“You should go back and rest. There are nursing staff watching me.”
“Evelyn, don’t push me away,” Alexander said, looking directly at her.
Evelyn pursed her lips for a long time and said nothing more.
Finally, she simply lay down and pulled the quilt over her head to sleep.
But after a while, she felt the quilt being lifted.
“What!” Evelyn stared at Alexander.
“Don’t sleep with your head covered,” Alexander said.
“That’s how I like it. Don’t bother me!”
“I’ll get you a different quilt tomorrow. You can sleep however you want then, but not today.”
“I want to sleep like this tonight!” Evelyn deliberately argued with Alexander.
In truth, she didn’t really want to sleep that way. It wasn’t comfortable. She just didn’t want to see Alexander’s face right now.
She hadn’t expected Alexander to be so stubborn. He kept lifting her quilt, refusing to let her cover her head.
“Be good,” Alexander coaxed her. “I’ll change the quilt now.”
After that, he walked out of the ward and called Grace Miller to send a silk quilt to the hospital—anything but white.
It wasn’t long before Grace bought a new quilt.
But then the nurse said the quilt couldn’t be used without disinfection, and brought a hospital one instead.
“Do you have quilts in other colors?” Alexander asked.
“There’s a pink one. Do you want to switch?” the nurse asked.
“Please, we’ll take the pink one,” Alexander said.
The nurse walked out of the ward with the white quilt in her arms.
Evelyn looked at the quilt on her body and the one Alexander had asked Grace to buy. Suddenly, she wanted to laugh.
She finally understood why Alexander wouldn’t let her sleep with her head covered. The hospital quilt was white. When she slept under it, it looked a bit creepy. She hadn’t expected Alexander to be so superstitious!
Still, it seemed like she was determined to go against him today. Whatever he didn’t want her to do, she wanted to do.
The nurse didn’t need to put a pink cover on the bed. Maybe it was a new one.
Evelyn was covered with the new quilt, but she no longer felt like sleeping with her head covered.
Alexander turned off the main light, leaving only a desk lamp.
“I’ll be in the living room. Call me if you need anything,” Alexander explained.
“Okay.”
“If you need to go to the bathroom, just call me,” Alexander added.
“Okay,” Evelyn said again.
Alexander helped her tuck in the quilt and walked out of the ward.
Evelyn lay in bed for a long time, but she didn’t feel sleepy.
When you’ve been lying in bed all day, you don’t want to sleep. You just want to run.
Running was impossible. She could only lie there.
And now Alexander was working overtime in the living room, flipping through papers.
He didn’t really need to stay with her in the hospital. He knew the bed was uncomfortable, and it wasn’t convenient for him to work there.
But he didn’t seem to understand her. She told him to go back and rest, but he wouldn’t.
He went to work at the company during the day and came to the hospital at night to keep her company.
Alexander worked late into the night, then went to take a shower, changed his clothes, and entered the ward.
He walked over to Evelyn’s bed, checked if her quilt was still tucked in, and then went to the family bed and lay down.
“Alexander, why don’t you go home to sleep?” Evelyn, still awake, couldn’t help muttering.
“Because my wife is too scared to sleep alone,” Alexander replied calmly.
“I’m not that timid!” Evelyn retorted.
“Sleep. I’m here with you,” Alexander said, ignoring her words.
Evelyn pouted, looked away, and stared at the ceiling. After a while, she finally felt sleepy and drifted off.
Alexander didn’t tell Evelyn the truth.
During the time she first lived with him, she often woke up in the middle of the night. Sometimes she cried in her sleep.
And every time he held her, she would sleep like a child.
