Chapter 392

Alexander Sterling stared at Evelyn’s eyes. The initial surprise in them slowly faded, replaced by confusion. Finally, her gaze dimmed, like a light going out. She lowered her eyelids and no longer looked at him.

“I’m tired. I want to sleep for a while,” Evelyn said to the nurse. “Please tell my husband when you leave. Ask him to go back and rest.”

“Of course,” the nurse replied with a smile. “Mrs. Sterling, your relationship with Mr. Sterling is truly enviable.”

Evelyn gave a faint smile. She didn’t deny it. She didn’t respond either.

In other people’s eyes, they were the perfect couple. Even Lily Thompson said the fourth young master had changed because of her.

She used to believe this was the best home.

Last night, the pain in her abdomen felt like cramps and bones being torn apart. Her chest felt like a giant rock was pressing down on her. She couldn’t breathe. For a moment, she almost felt like she was going to die.

She wanted to call an ambulance. But she didn’t dare hang up the phone. She was afraid that if Nathan Cole on the other end noticed something wrong, he would do something extreme to Alexander.

She held the phone. She listened while preparing to call Lily Thompson for help.

Then she heard Alexander’s voice on the other end. He stopped Nathan Cole. That single word pierced through Evelyn’s eardrum and struck her heart.

Evelyn was distracted. She didn’t notice her feet. She slipped and fell hard onto the ground. But at the moment of impact, she instinctively used her hands to support herself. She wanted to protect the baby in her belly.

Everything went black before her eyes. She couldn’t breathe. She heard Nathan Cole say—

“Didn’t you say she has nothing to do with you? Now that it’s over, why do you care so much!”

Then Alexander’s voice—

“What else do you have? Let’s finish it all at once!”

He still cared about Grace O’Sullivan. He would risk everything for her. Even his own safety.

She once asked Alexander, “If Grace and I fell into the water at the same time, who would you save first?”

Back then, she just wanted him to face his feelings through that question. But now she was truly faced with that choice.

Alexander was not by her side. He was by Grace’s side.

That was when Evelyn’s heart turned cold as ice before she fainted.

We always imagine many scenarios. We ask the people closest to us questions. But the answers under those assumptions are often edited. They only say what the other person most wants to hear. They don’t necessarily reflect their true thoughts.

Only in reality, the other person’s instinctive choice reveals their heart.

So when two people are together, don’t keep asking— Do you love me? Will you love me forever? Will you always be good to me?

These questions are meaningless. Instead of wasting energy on them, feel with your heart. Or enrich yourself.

If you bloom, the butterflies will come.

After the nurse finished her records, she left the ICU ward. She handed the records to the doctor on duty. She informed him that the patient was awake.

The doctor checked the data and treatment situation. He entered the ward to do a routine examination for Evelyn. He asked her if she felt any discomfort.

The nurse called the duty nurse. She asked her to inform Mr. Sterling about Mrs. Sterling.

After hearing the nurse’s message, Alexander thanked her. There was no expression on his face. But his eyes were heavy.

Through the window, he looked at Evelyn lying on the bed. He watched the doctor examining her.

At that moment, the nurse came over. She smiled apologetically at Alexander. She closed the curtain, blocking his view.

Alexander couldn’t see inside the ward anymore. He couldn’t see Evelyn. He pursed his lips slightly. He looked tired and defeated.

“Alexander, how is Evelyn?”

Hearing the voice beside him, Alexander didn’t turn around. He said faintly, “What are you doing here?”

“I’m sorry. I just found out Evelyn was hospitalized. Is she okay?” Grace O’Sullivan replied awkwardly.

“She’s fine. Thank you for your concern.”

“That’s good. Thank you for saving me yesterday.”

“Grace, please understand one thing,” Alexander replied coldly. “I showed up because it involved me. At the same time, I wanted to leave Nathan Cole one last chance. Not because the person he kidnapped was you.”

“I know,” Grace said softly. Her heart felt like ash.

“Please don’t appear in front of me again,” Alexander said finally.

Grace trembled. She stared at Alexander. Her lips parted slightly. She wanted to say something. But in the end, she said nothing. She just replied, “I’ll do as you wish. I hope Evelyn recovers soon.”

After she finished, she turned her head and looked at the ward. She couldn’t see anything. The curtain covered everything.

She didn’t know what Alexander was looking at. But it had nothing to do with her anymore.

Grace took one last look at Alexander’s profile. Then she turned and walked away from the ward.

She had returned home because she received a text message. It said Alexander was in trouble. So she rushed back as fast as she could.

At that moment, she was so confused. She barely had time to think. She bought the earliest flight and flew back to the country.

Unexpectedly, she fell into the other person’s trap. She became a pawn to threaten Alexander.

When Alexander appeared in front of her, she felt he still loved her. At that moment, she wasn’t even afraid of death.

But now, things were not what she wanted.

After Nathan Cole took the phone and said those words to the person on the other end, she realized— Nathan Cole’s goal wasn’t money. It was to destroy Alexander.

No matter who Alexander chose in the end, the other person would become a tool to destroy him.

She believed that if Alexander chose her at that moment, Nathan Cole wouldn’t let her go. Nathan Cole said he would make Alexander taste the pain of losing someone he loved.

At the same time, if Alexander chose her, Evelyn on the other end of the phone would be hurt hearing it. Alexander would face trouble from both sides.

But if Alexander chose Evelyn, she would be the safest. Evelyn would be comforted hearing Alexander’s words.

Maybe Nathan Cole would choose to die with Alexander. He would let Alexander’s beloved woman bear the next pain.

That was where Nathan Cole was fearless.

But she couldn’t understand why Nathan Cole finally gave up. Why he chose to kill himself.

Did he already know that Evelyn on the other end was in danger? Even if Alexander chose Evelyn, he might not be able to keep her?

There were no real answers to these questions. Because Nathan Cole was dead. He took those answers to hell.

What about her? Where did she come from? Where did she want to go back to?

When she came, she was alone. When she went back, she was also alone.
