Honestly, even on Alexander’s side, she couldn’t believe nothing had happened. She couldn’t just forgive her third sister. After all, Scarlett had once tried to kill Alexander. Back then, she hadn’t cared about family at all. Now she regretted it. But it seemed too late to fix things.
“Audrey, I know Scarlett made an unforgivable mistake. Don’t even mention Mom and Alexander. Even I am furious. I can’t forgive her.”
“She had a good life. But she had to listen to Nathan’s lies. She wanted things that never belonged to her. She stopped at nothing. Now, she’s landed herself in prison. Locking her up for a few years to teach her a lesson is only right.”
“So no matter what decisions Mom and Alexander make, I support them. Scarlett brought this on herself.”
“But no matter what, Scarlett is still my sister. Knowing she’s about to die… honestly, it makes me very sad,” Isabelle replied slowly.
“Second sister, I understand how you feel. After all, blood is thicker than water. It’s impossible to be completely indifferent.”
“If only my third sister had shown a little bit of old affection. Maybe things wouldn’t have come to this today.”
“Second sister, you should know. Third sister once tried to have me kidnapped. She wanted to control Alexander through me. She didn’t succeed in the end, but she tried.”
“So I can’t say anything for my third sister. The only thing I can do is not kick her while she’s down,” Evelyn responded calmly.
“Scarlett really tried to have you kidnapped?” Isabelle asked, shocked.
“Second sister, you were the one who warned me to be careful recently. I barely escaped that disaster. Looking back, I still need to thank you!”
“I didn’t know if Scarlett would actually do it. I was just worried.”
“I never expected Scarlett to be so crazy.”
“Someone like that doesn’t deserve sympathy or pity.”
“Evelyn, just pretend I never said what I just said. I didn’t know Scarlett could be so cruel,” Isabelle replied helplessly.
“I don’t remember anything you just said, second sister,” Evelyn said with a light smile.
Isabelle looked at Evelyn. After a moment, she nodded.
“Evelyn, you’re a generous person. I won’t say anything more.”
“Scarlett’s current situation is entirely her own fault. She doesn’t deserve anyone’s sympathy. I won’t help her anymore from now on.”
“Don’t worry about it anymore. Take good care of yourself. When the time comes, you’ll have a healthy baby boy. Our family will be even livelier,” Isabelle said.
“Thank you, second sister!” Evelyn replied.
After chatting with Evelyn for a while, Isabelle walked toward her home. She couldn’t help but let out a deep sigh.
She had advised Scarlett more than once. Don’t be greedy. Don’t covet things that don’t belong to you. Even if the information she got was true. Even if Alexander really wasn’t a blood relative. As long as Mom and Alexander were willing, the evidence was just worthless paper. She was no match for Mom and Alexander. Don’t throw an egg at a stone.
But Scarlett had been blinded by greed. And Nathan had been whispering in her ear the whole time. She couldn’t listen to anyone.
During the trial, Scarlett learned that Nathan had blamed everything on her. The person she trusted most had become the one who stabbed her in the back. On top of that, the first verdict came down. It completely broke her.
Isabelle went to see her. Scarlett screamed at the top of her lungs. She begged Isabelle to plead with Mom and Alexander. She said she knew she was wrong now. She would never dare to scheme again. She said it was all Nathan’s fault.
“If only you had known this from the start!” Isabelle said, glaring at Scarlett with frustration.
“Second sister, I was wrong. I was wrong. I was tricked by that bastard Nathan. He encouraged me to do all of this. He gave me the information. Second sister, believe me. I really didn’t mean to—” Scarlett begged, tears streaming down her face.
Isabelle walked out of the detention center. The glare of the sun blinded her. In a daze, she remembered when she was very young. She and Scarlett were curled up in a corner of a wall, afraid of strangers. Then a pair of hands reached out over their heads. A gentle voice sounded.
“Come back with me. I will be your mother from now on.”
Isabelle pulled her gaze back. She lowered her head. Her eyes were dark.
In truth, she had always known. She and Scarlett were adopted by their mother. She used to call their father “uncle,” not “father.” Only Scarlett always called him “father.”
So when she grew up, she understood. She and Scarlett were not the family’s biological children. They were adopted.
That was why she advised Scarlett more than once. Don’t be greedy. What they had now was a happiness many people could only dream of. They should know how to be content. Cherish happiness. Be grateful.
But clearly, she had failed as an older sister. Instead of guiding Scarlett onto the right path, she had watched her go astray.
So Scarlett’s current situation was, to some extent, her fault. She hadn’t taught her well. When Scarlett got together with Nathan, she should have opposed it to the very end.
But Scarlett’s words—
“Why can you marry the person you love, but I can’t?”
—had left her speechless.
Back then, out of vanity, she didn’t want to admit that she and James were just husband and wife in name only. In the end, she had let Scarlett be with Nathan.
If she had strongly opposed it from the beginning, maybe things wouldn’t have ended like this.
Thinking about it now only added to her regret.
After all, time couldn’t turn back. There was no regret medicine in the world.
Scarlett had lost her way. She had let herself fall into the abyss. Even if Isabelle wanted to save her, she couldn’t.
Isabelle let out a deep sigh.
Now, facing her mother and Alexander, she felt guilty. Even if she sometimes wanted to plead for Scarlett, she couldn’t say a word.
Today, she met Evelyn. She finally gathered the courage to mention Scarlett. She just never expected that Scarlett had tried to have someone kidnap Evelyn.
Hearing that, she was too ashamed to plead for Scarlett.
Scarlett had really dug a hole and buried herself.
How had her once beautiful and excellent sister become so vicious!
Evelyn watched her second sister’s back. It seemed a bit stooped and shaky. In the end, she had aged and withered for her third sister’s sake.
But second sister had always cared deeply for her sister. She had run around for her affairs. Meanwhile, third sister had never once thought about second sister’s feelings. She had done everything completely on her own. It was truly a pity.
Lily Thompson saw the two young ladies leave. Only then did she walk back to her mistress’s side.
