She only learned about what happened to Scarlett Sterling later, when her mother mentioned it.
That day, she visited her mother's house as usual.
She went back once a week, like clockwork.
When she didn't visit, her mother would stew something and send it over. Or she'd ask Victoria to deliver it. That way, Evie didn't have to run back and forth for no reason.
Evie was eating the soup her mother had made for her. She heard her mother say, "Evie, how are things going with the Sterlings lately?"
"The same, Mom. Why do you ask all of a sudden?" Evie looked at her mother.
"Nothing. I just think a big family like theirs must be complicated."
"Mom, you're overthinking it again. It's complicated if you think it is. It's simple if you don't. Anyway, I just talk to Alexander. It's not that hard." Evie smiled.
Amelia nodded. "You're lucky to have married Alexander!"
Evie laughed even brighter and nodded.
"I heard that Alexander's third sister is going to be sentenced to life in prison!" Amelia asked again.
"Life in prison? Why?" Evie asked, stunned.
"You didn't know?" Amelia was surprised.
"No. Alexander didn't tell me, and I didn't ask." Evie shook her head.
"Then pretend I didn't say anything!" Amelia said.
"Mom, don't stop halfway." Evie protested.
"I heard that Alexander's third sister embezzled a huge amount of company funds. Then she was charged with extortion, kidnapping, and blackmail. A lot of charges. The first trial sentenced her to life in prison." Amelia explained.
"Oh." Evie answered softly.
"Why are you so indifferent? When she was with the family, she lived such a good life. But she had to go after these crooked ways. Look at the result. She ended up in prison. I also heard that her husband pinned all the charges on her. He got off scot-free!"
"No way!" Evie looked at her mother in shock.
"That woman was stupid. She was used to counting money for someone else. They say she couldn't accept the verdict. She screamed hysterically in court. She said she was used. She said her husband was a monster! If she had known this would happen, why did she do it in the first place?" Amelia said with emotion.
"Hateful people always have something pitiful about them." Evie sighed.
"That's right!" Amelia nodded.
Evie lowered her head and continued drinking her soup. She thought about how Alexander had given Scarlett so many chances. But Scarlett would rather believe Nathan than Alexander.
Maybe in Scarlett's heart, she always thought she had no blood relation to Alexander. She thought Alexander would never truly be on her side.
Nathan was her husband. Legally, even though a spouse isn't blood-related, he was her first priority. So she was more willing to trust the man she slept next to.
If it were her, she would have the same psychology!
Under the same circumstances, she would rather believe Alexander. After all, he was her husband.
So the human heart was the most complicated thing. Most of the time, you never knew if the person closest to you would become the most terrifying one.
Evie stayed at her mother's house until dusk.
Alexander would leave work early tonight. She was planning to pick him up. She didn't want him to run back and forth. Besides, they hadn't had dinner together in a while. She would let him come straight home after work. She would go back early and they would have dinner together.
When Evie returned to Sterling Manor, Lily was stewing soup for her.
Evie felt like she was being over-nourished. Whether she was at her mother's house or here, there were always endless nutritious meals. But she had to eat as much as she could.
Lily had also fried two kinds of dishes that Alexander liked. Evie went upstairs first to take a bath and change clothes.
Since she had to wait for Alexander to come back for dinner, Evie sat in the living room on the second floor. She knitted a scarf while waiting for him.
This wasn't the first time she had knitted a scarf. But it was so ugly that she had to unravel it and start over. This time, it looked a little better.
Hearing movement downstairs, Evie put the knitting needles into the basket. She set it aside and went downstairs.
Alexander was handing his coat and briefcase to Lily.
"You're back!" Evie greeted Alexander with a smile.
"I wanted to surprise you, but I didn't expect you to come downstairs first!" Alexander finished speaking and walked over to Evie. He held out a bouquet of roses.
"Where did you get that?" Evie asked happily, taking the flowers.
"I saw you holding your jacket in one hand and your briefcase in the other. You weren't holding any flowers at all!"
"I can't tell you. It wasn't easy for me to learn!" Alexander answered mysteriously.
Evie couldn't help but laugh.
He was going to do magic!
After smelling the flowers, they smelled wonderful. Evie turned to Alexander and said, "Go upstairs and take a bath first. We can eat later."
"Okay!" Alexander answered. He lowered his head and kissed Evie's forehead. Then he went upstairs to take a bath.
At that moment, Lily found a vase. Evie handed the flowers to her and asked her to put them on the living room table on the second floor.
That way, she could see them from her bedroom or from upstairs.
Evie went into the kitchen to make some dessert.
When Lily had arranged the flowers, she came downstairs. She saw Evie busy in front of the counter. She quickly walked over and said, "Young lady, just tell me what you want to do."
"It's okay. I'll just make some dessert." Evie turned her head and smiled.
"I'll make the dessert for you, young lady!"
"Lily, you don't have to be so nervous. I won't have any problem making some dessert. Besides, I haven't cooked in a while. I really want to make something myself. Just think of it as me taking a break." Evie comforted Lily.
"Then if you get tired, young lady, just tell me. I'll take over." Lily had to compromise.
"Okay!" Evie nodded.
Lily started to clean the pot, ready to stir-fry the vegetables.
All the dishes were ready, except for the fried vegetables. Since the fourth young master was back, she would stir-fry the vegetables, serve them on the table, and set the dishes. Then the fourth young master and the young lady could have dinner.
Alexander came downstairs after taking a bath. Evie had finished making the dessert, so they could eat it later.
Alexander walked into the kitchen and hugged Evie. He asked, "What good thing did you make for me?"
"Don't you see the big table outside?" Evie asked with a smile.
"What about this one you prepared?" Alexander asked.
"Dessert!"
"It seems I haven't eaten your dessert in a long time!" Alexander sighed.
"I don't even have a chance to cook now! I only managed to make this dessert tonight because I fought Lily for it!" Evie laughed.
