Married into a wealthy family. A husband who loves her. A happy home. A smooth career. An excellent academic record. Life couldn't be more perfect.
When Evelyn heard those comments, she felt uneasy.
Sometimes, something that seems too perfect isn't necessarily a good thing.
As the old saying goes, misfortune hides within good fortune, and good fortune hides within misfortune.
But for Evelyn now, life was truly good.
Alexander was busy and often traveled for work. But he still tried to spend time with her. The relationship between Alexander and her family was a bit complicated. At least they got along well.
If she complained any more, she would be unreasonable.
It was late September, autumn. Evelyn saw Grace again.
She was accompanying her mother to the hospital for a checkup when she ran into her.
Even though she almost didn't recognize her. Grace had lost so much weight.
"Grace, how did you lose so much weight?" Evelyn asked in surprise.
"I haven't been feeling well lately. My appetite is poor, so I've lost some weight," Grace said with a smile. She looked up at the obstetrics and gynecology sign and asked, "Are you pregnant? Congratulations!"
"Oh, no. I'm accompanying my mother for a checkup. She hasn't been feeling well lately," Evelyn explained awkwardly. "Have you seen the doctor?"
"I've finished my examination. The report will be out in two days."
"Then go accompany your aunt quickly. I won't disturb you. Let's have tea together another day!" Grace waved her hand and replied.
"Okay! Take care of yourself!" Evelyn nodded.
"Thank you! Goodbye!" Grace said and walked away.
Amelia came out of the examination room. She looked at Grace's back and asked, "Your friend?"
"Yes," Evelyn answered. She didn't tell her mother specifically about the relationship between Grace and Alexander. There was no need to mention it. "Mom, what did the doctor say?"
"He asked me to do a color Doppler ultrasound first. If there's no problem, it'll be fine," Amelia said.
"Let's go get it checked quickly!" Evelyn held her mother's arm.
"I need to make an appointment first. I'll come back next week for the examination."
"Can't we get it checked right away?" Evelyn asked.
"There are too many people. Do you think it's that easy to get an appointment?"
"I'll call Alexander!" Evelyn said, reaching for her phone in her bag.
"Forget it. It's not an emergency. Alexander is so busy. Don't bother him," Amelia held her hand and stopped her.
"Mom, I'm worried about your health," Evelyn explained.
"The doctor just asked me to get a color Doppler ultrasound. He didn't say I have any disease. He just wants me to have the ultrasound."
"Oh," Evelyn felt relieved.
They submitted the appointment form to the color Doppler desk. After making an appointment for next week, Evelyn went home with her mother first.
Back home, Amelia wanted to cook something for Evelyn.
"Mom, don't bother. I'll cook whatever you want to eat," Evelyn said, guiding her mother to sit down.
"I'm afraid you'll go hungry," Amelia said with a sigh.
"I'm a grown woman. I won't starve myself. If you're feeling unwell, don't push yourself. Rest," Evelyn advised.
"It's okay to be busy. I'm just afraid I can't do it," Amelia sighed.
"Mom, you're talking nonsense again."
"Okay, okay, I'll stop. I'd like some noodle paste. You can cook it."
"Okay, rest first. Don't run off to do anything else. I'll cook the noodle paste."
"What else can I do?" Amelia sighed again.
Evelyn looked at her mother for a long time. She didn't say anything more. She got up and went into the kitchen to cook some noodle paste for her mother.
Her mother's stomach had been uncomfortable lately. Her appetite was poor. She couldn't eat much.
It was rare that she wanted to eat noodle paste now.
Then Evelyn remembered seeing Grace in the hospital just now. She wondered if Grace had some disease. How did she get so thin?
And she didn't know if she should tell Alexander about it.
Evelyn suddenly felt conflicted.
After cooking the noodle paste, Evelyn accompanied her mother to finish eating. She brewed a pot of flower tea for her. Then, under her mother's urging, she went back to Sterling Manor.
When Alexander came back in the evening, he asked about his mother-in-law's examination results.
Evelyn said the doctor didn't say anything. He just issued a color Doppler ultrasound form. She would go for the examination next week.
"It's better to get it checked. I'll feel more at ease," Alexander said.
"Yes, it's good if there's nothing wrong," Evelyn echoed.
"What's wrong? Worried about your mother-in-law?" Alexander saw that Evelyn's mood was a bit low and asked.
"Nothing," Evelyn shook her head. She didn't know if she should tell Alexander about seeing Grace in the hospital today.
"Is there something you want to tell me?" Alexander asked again.
"When I accompanied my mother to the hospital for a checkup today, I ran into Grace. She's lost a lot of weight," Evelyn said.
"And then?" Alexander asked calmly.
"It seems she just finished some examination. She said she would get the report in two days."
"What does this have to do with us?" Alexander looked directly at Evelyn and continued to ask.
"It has nothing to do with us. I'm just telling you."
"We can't take care of other people's affairs. If there's nothing else, let's take a bath first. You smell like sweat."
"Do I?" Evelyn lowered her head and sniffed herself. "I'll take a bath first."
So she went into the bedroom and took a bath first.
After the color Doppler ultrasound examination, Amelia had a small uterine fibroid. It was below the level requiring surgery. She would just need to come back for regular checkups.
Evelyn felt relieved. Although there was a problem, at least it wasn't very serious.
"Mom, let the babysitter handle the housework from now on. Don't tire yourself out. You need to rest and relax," Evelyn explained.
"How did you become more long-winded than your mother?" Amelia replied.
"I'm just worried you'll push yourself too hard and not take care of your health."
"I'm afraid of death. How could I not take care of myself? You can rest assured. But it's you. Why haven't you gotten pregnant yet? Do you want to go to the hospital for a checkup? Medicine is so advanced now. If there's any problem, we can treat it symptomatically."
"Mom, you don't need to worry about me. My body is fine. It's just that the fate with the baby hasn't arrived yet. I just told you to relax, and now you're worrying again," Evelyn said.
"Forget it. You don't like to hear it," Amelia sighed.
Nowadays, young people didn't like to listen to the elderly.
She might as well pray more, pray for Evelyn, and hope she would get pregnant soon.
The Sterling family was now looking forward to Evelyn contributing to the family. But Evelyn and Alexander had been married for over half a year, and there was still no news. It was strange that they weren't anxious.
