This was the first time Alexander Sterling told Evelyn about his family. It was also the first time Evelyn realized many things weren't as simple as she thought.
To be precise, she hadn't even considered them problems before. It was the first time she started to reflect on herself. She wondered if there were many places where she hadn't done enough.
Monday mornings were always a bit busier than usual. The problems that piled up over the weekend had to be solved on Monday. Evelyn was also told to do more things temporarily. She was so busy she barely had time to use the bathroom.
Evelyn finally took a moment to go to the restroom. When she came back, a large bunch of daisies sat on her desk.
"Whose flowers are these?" Evelyn asked. Whose else could they be? They were on her desk for now.
"Yours, just delivered by the front desk. Evelyn has a suitor!" Chloe Parker said with a smile.
"Mine? How is that possible!" Evelyn hesitated before answering. She picked up the bouquet to look at it.
"They're yours. There should be a card. Just look for it," Ella Baker echoed with a smile.
Evelyn didn't find a card. She thought it couldn't be the flowers Alexander ordered! But there was no one else besides him.
After smelling the flowers for a long time, Evelyn placed the bouquet on the cabinet beside her. Otherwise, with such a big bunch on her desk, she wouldn't be able to work.
"Evelyn, who sent them?" Chloe Parker asked.
"No card. I don't know!" Evelyn said with a smile.
"So it's a mysterious admirer," Chloe Parker said with a grin.
Evelyn smiled awkwardly. She didn't explain anything. She sat down, ready to work.
After a moment, she took out her phone from her bag. She sent a text message to Alexander: "I like the flowers. Thank you, my husband!"
After sending the message, Evelyn started working. Before long, her desk phone rang.
When she picked it up, she heard Alexander's voice on the other end. "I didn't send the flowers!"
"Ah?" Evelyn replied, stunned. "Then who did?"
"That's a question for Mrs. Sterling to answer. Go home tonight and have a good think!"
"Ah?" Evelyn was speechless.
"Go on. People will think I married a deaf-mute wife!"
"Oh, okay!" Evelyn answered and hung up.
She turned to look at the bouquet. Alexander didn't send them. Who could it be? It couldn't have been delivered to the wrong person!
So Evelyn called the front desk again. They confirmed it was for her. Then the front desk said a card was on the table. They hadn't seen it just now, so they would send it to her later.
Evelyn thanked the front desk and hung up. Maybe it was a joke from Charlotte! Evelyn couldn't help laughing at the thought.
She put down the receiver and started working. Anyway, she would know when she saw the card. She could read the words in Charlotte's handwriting.
She was busy until lunchtime. She received a call from Emily Hart, asking her to have lunch together. Evelyn agreed, finished the work at hand, and went downstairs.
She stopped by the front desk to get that card. It was a delicate maple leaf card. There were three words on the card: "Courier."
There were only two letters on the card: MC. At first glance, Evelyn thought it said WC. Then she realized MC didn't mean "aunt"? She couldn't help shivering. How did this guy get such a strange name! But the handwriting was very beautiful.
Evelyn took the card with a puzzled face. She walked into the elevator, went upstairs, and went to the staff restaurant to have lunch with Emily.
After walking out of the elevator, Emily saw her. She came over, took her hand, and asked, "Why are you so slow?"
"I went to the front desk to get something!" Evelyn answered.
The two of them went to the order window to line up. Evelyn was still thinking about who MC was on that card.
"Evelyn, Evelyn—"
"Huh?" Evelyn looked up at Emily, dazed.
"What are you thinking about? I called you and you didn't respond!" Emily complained.
"I'll tell you later!" Evelyn said mysteriously.
Emily glanced at her and didn't ask further. After they got their food, they found a seat in the corner and sat down.
"What's the matter? So mysterious?" Emily asked.
"I received a bunch of daisies this morning. Then there was a card with the words 'Courier' and two letters, MC. Do you think there's anyone we know named MC?"
"Isn't MC the great aunt?" Emily blurted out.
Evelyn covered her mouth with a smile, then nodded. "I thought it said WC at first!"
"Who would take such a strange name?" Emily asked curiously.
"I think it should be the initials of a name. Just like I'm EV, and you're EH!"
"So you're EH!" Emily said with a laugh.
"I'm serious. Is there anyone we know whose initials are MC?"
"Let me think!" Emily said, scooping a sweet and sour fillet into her mouth, chewing and thinking.
After a moment, she suddenly said, "Isn't the first letter of Liam Brooks MC?"
Evelyn couldn't help rolling her eyes. "Do you think Liam Brooks would send me flowers?"
"Yeah, Liam already has a girlfriend!" Emily muttered.
Liam Brooks was a classmate in their class. But he already had a girlfriend, and they had a good relationship.
"Besides Liam, who else has M and C in their name?" Emily muttered while eating.
"Maya Hart! Yes, the two letters in front of Maya are exactly MC!" Emily suddenly cried out.
Evelyn quickly motioned for her to keep her voice down. Then she said, "Is Maya Hart a girl?"
Maya Hart wasn't a classmate in their class. She was a girl from the English Department who lived next door to their dormitory.
"Oh, forget it!" Emily said with a smile.
Evelyn couldn't help rolling her eyes again.
"Except for those two, I really can't think of anyone else's name with the letters MC!"
"Forget it. Maybe someone played a prank on me!" Evelyn shrugged.
"Evelyn, I think you'd better be careful. Maybe it's a pervert! According to the suspense novel I read recently, it might contain information we haven't cracked yet. This person might have bad intentions toward you. Sending flowers is only the first step. There might be other actions in the future. You'd better be careful!" Emily warned.
Evelyn's heart skipped a beat. She looked at Emily. "Don't scare me, okay?"
"You don't read novels, but you've seen Hong Kong movies. Don't the police solve cases by finding clues through strange patterns or letters?" Emily said seriously.
Evelyn looked at Emily and thought what she said seemed reasonable!
"What should I do next?"
"Isn't that nonsense? Of course, you should pay attention to personal safety. If nothing's wrong, don't run around. You'd better have some self-defense items on you!"
"Oh!" Evelyn answered.
What did she mean, don't run around if nothing's wrong? She was so busy she didn't even have time to go to the bathroom now. She couldn't run around unless she sleepwalked!
But Emily also said it was no bad thing to be careful.
