Chapter 186

Evelyn arrived at Rose Garden Villa with a bag of fruit in her hand.

Isabella sat quietly on a wicker chair in the yard.

Her face was blank, lost in thought.

She didn’t even hear Evelyn enter the yard.

“Bella?”

Evelyn walked over and called out softly.

Isabella flinched, as if shocked.

She turned her head and saw Evelyn.

After a moment, a smile spread across her face. “Evie, you’re here!”

She turned toward the house. “Hattie, bring out a chair for Miss Evie!”

“Coming!” Hattie’s voice answered from inside.

“What brings you here so suddenly?” Isabella asked, her voice soft.

“I got off work early today. I passed the market and saw some fresh peaches, so I picked some up.” Evelyn lifted the bag and smiled.

“You don’t have to bring anything. Just coming to sit with me is enough.”

“It’s nothing special. I grabbed them on a whim.” Evelyn replied.

Hattie soon brought out a wicker chair and set it down for Evelyn.

“Thank you, Hattie!” Evelyn said, handing her the fruit bag.

“You’re welcome, Miss. I’ll make some tea!” Hattie took the bag with a smile and went back inside.

Evelyn sat down and started chatting with her sister-in-law.

“Hasn’t Gray finished work yet?” Isabella asked.

“He has a dinner party tonight. He’ll be home later.” Evelyn answered honestly.

“They’re always so busy with those parties.” Isabella sighed, almost to herself.

Evelyn changed the subject. “The moon looks so full tonight.”

“Today is the fourteenth. Tomorrow is the fifteenth.” Isabella smiled.

“I used to keep track of the days of the week. Now I just watch the date. I never pay attention to the lunar calendar anymore.” Evelyn laughed.

Back in school, she counted the days of the week, waiting for holidays and class schedules.

After her internship, she started counting the days of the month, waiting for payday.

She got her first salary, but it wasn’t hers to keep. She had to pay it back to Alexander.

Alexander glanced at the money and said, “Just deposit it into the card and give it to me.”

“How will I get my salary from now on?” Evelyn asked, confused.

“What do you need your salary for?”

“To spend, of course!”

“Isn’t the card I gave you enough?”

“It’s more than enough! I can’t even spend it all.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“But… I only need to pay you back twice!”

“When you’ve paid it off, ask me for a new card.” Alexander continued.

“Oh.” Evelyn replied.

Debt always made her feel insecure.

“Evie?”

“Huh?” Evelyn snapped back to reality and looked at her sister-in-law.

“What were you thinking about?” Isabella asked with a smile.

“Nothing. I have a bad habit of daydreaming.” Evelyn replied, embarrassed.

“People who daydream are smart people.”

“Really?” Evelyn looked at her sister-in-law in surprise.

“Yes. It gives their brains a better rest.”

“Ha ha, you’re teasing me! Everyone says I’m stupid. Gray always calls me an idiot!” Evelyn laughed.

“You’re not stupid. You just don’t like wasting time on meaningless things.” Isabella smiled.

Evelyn felt a little shy under her sister-in-law’s gaze.

She stayed and talked with Isabella for a long time before heading back to Sterling Manor.

The braised fish head with gastrodia was ready.

But Alexander still hadn’t come home.

Evelyn sat on the sofa on the first floor, flipping through a business English book, waiting for him.

Her phone rang.

She picked it up and saw it was Emily calling.

She answered. “Em, thinking of me all of a sudden?”

“Evie, please come help me! I’ve had an accident!” Emily was crying on the other end.

Evelyn’s heart dropped. “Where are you? What happened?”

Emily sobbed and told her.

Evelyn said she would come right away and told Emily to stay calm.

After hanging up, she called the driver.

She needed to go to the hospital.

Before Emily called her, the person who hit her had already called 911. The ambulance had taken Emily straight to the hospital.

Evelyn went directly to the hospital and found Emily in the emergency room.

A doctor was examining her.

“Em!” Evelyn walked over.

Emily turned her head and saw Evelyn. She burst into tears.

The doctor had to calm her down before he could continue the exam.

Luckily, after the check-up, nothing was seriously wrong except for the injury on her leg.

But the cut was deep and needed stitches.

When Emily heard she needed stitches, she cried so loud it could have lifted the roof.

“We’ll use anesthesia. It won’t hurt.” The doctor explained.

“It still hurts even with anesthesia!” Emily sobbed.

“Em, don’t be so nervous. Let’s get the wound treated first. If it leaves a scar, you won’t be able to wear short skirts!” Evelyn advised.

Emily froze and stared at Evelyn.

The doctor turned his head and looked at Evelyn, thinking she knew how to handle the patient.

Emily calmed down. She went to pay the fee first, and soon the stitching began.

Evelyn stood outside waiting.

Her phone rang.

She quickly pulled it out of her bag and answered.

“Where are you?”

“I’m at the hospital.”

“What happened?” Alexander’s voice dropped.

“I’m fine. It’s Emily. She was hit by a car and hurt her leg. She’s getting stitches now.”

“Which hospital?”

Evelyn told him, then added, “The driver brought me here. Don’t worry. I’ll come home when I’m done.”

“Be careful.” Alexander instructed.

“Okay. Thank you, husband.” Evelyn couldn’t help saying.

“Mm.” Alexander replied and hung up.

After the stitches, Emily came out of the operating room and was taken to a ward.

Emily looked around the room and asked, “Evie, did you book this VIP ward for me? How much is it per night? If the guy who hit me doesn’t pay, I’ll be broke!”

“I didn’t book the ward. Maybe the hospital arranged it. Don’t worry, I’ll ask.” Evelyn comforted her.

A nurse came in with an IV drip. Evelyn asked the nurse first.

The nurse said she wasn’t sure and told Evelyn to check at the front desk.

Evelyn went to the front desk and found out that someone had already booked a VIP ward for them and asked them to take good care of them. The hospital director had even called to check on them.

Evelyn was stunned. Who was so generous and had so much influence?

The next second, she thought it might be Alexander.

So she called him and found out he had arranged everything.

“Thank you, husband.” Evelyn said sincerely.

“Come back early when you’re done. Your friend is being taken care of. Don’t cause trouble over there.” Alexander said, as if he hadn’t heard her thanks, his voice deep.

“Okay!” Evelyn replied with a smile.
