Chapter 143

"It's just love!" Nathan said flatly.

Scarlett looked at him. "Yes, people get married first, then fall in love. By the way, how's your project going?"

"No progress." Nathan answered impatiently.

"No progress? Then figure it out fast. I want to ask Mom to transfer us to the South America branch after you make some achievements here. We're being held back. There's no future for us."

Nathan glanced at Scarlett but said nothing. He just nodded.

After breakfast, Alexander went to the company. Evie spent the morning with Eleanor. In the afternoon, with nothing else to do, she went back to her mother's place.

She returned home before it got dark.

Her mother had urged her to come back early. Otherwise, Alexander would come home from work and not see her. That wouldn't be good. After all, they were newlyweds. And Alexander worked so hard. She should go back early and prepare dinner. Her mother went on and on about it.

Evie couldn't argue with her mother, so she had to leave early.

Evie and her sister-in-law prepared dinner together. In the end, it was just the three of them.

Everyone else either didn't come home to eat or was working overtime at the company.

Alexander came back a little late.

Evie was sitting on the sofa, reading while waiting for him. She almost fell asleep.

Half-asleep, Evie woke up when she heard someone coming up the stairs. She turned her head and saw Alexander walking up.

"You're back!" Evie ran over excitedly. The next second, she saw the bruise on the corner of Alexander's mouth and was startled. "What happened?"

"Nothing." Alexander replied calmly.

"No, your eye and your mouth are hurt!" Evie reached out to touch the bruise, but Alexander pulled her hand down.

"I bumped into something. It's nothing." Alexander said, pulling Evie back to the sofa to sit down.

"I'll get the first-aid kit. How did you bump into yourself like this? It must hurt so much!" Evie muttered as she walked toward the stairs.

Alexander sat on the sofa, expressionless.

After a long time, Evie still hadn't come upstairs.

Alexander called out, "Evie—"

"I'm in the kitchen. I'll boil an egg and come right up." Evie answered from downstairs.

After Evie boiled the egg, she came upstairs with the first-aid kit. Alexander wasn't in the living room.

Evie entered the bedroom and was relieved to hear the sound of water coming from the bathroom.

The next second, she was startled. She went to the bathroom door and knocked. "Alexander, don't touch the water if you're injured!"

There was no response. The sound of the water stopped.

Evie wondered if Alexander had heard her. Then the bathroom door opened.

For a long moment, Evie looked up and saw the water dripping from him.

"Why didn't you dry yourself? You'll catch a cold." Evie said. She quickly put the first-aid kit and the egg on the sofa and went into the bathroom to get a towel.

After coming out, she helped Alexander dry his hair. She carefully avoided the injured corner of his eye and mouth.

After drying it halfway, she went into the dressing room to get his robe.

She made Alexander put on the robe. Then Evie took out the gauze from the first-aid kit, carefully wrapped the egg, and told Alexander to apply it to the bruised area.

Then she started looking at the bottles. She didn't know which one was the bruise ointment.

Alexander was applying the egg while watching Evie, who was nervous and talking to herself.

"Evie, I'm fine." Alexander had to reassure her.

"You're injured. How could you bump into something? Was there so much going on at the company today that you couldn't tell left from right?" Evie finally found the bruise ointment. She breathed a sigh of relief, looked up at Alexander, and said.

"It's just a little bruise." Alexander said.

"This side is swollen. You can't be so careless in the future!" Evie said painfully.

Alexander stared at Evie. Then he lowered his head and kissed her on the forehead.

Evie froze. She stared blankly at Alexander.

"Evie, you really are my angel." Alexander smiled and pinched Evie's nose.

"And you're still my husband!" Evie blurted out.

The next second, she felt that this kind of answer seemed a bit wrong.

But right now, she didn't care that much. "Anyway, you have to be more careful in the future. It's amazing that a grown man can walk and bump into something!"

Evie didn't say anything more. She took a cotton swab and gently helped Alexander apply the ointment. Her expression was as if she was working on a great project.

After applying the ointment, Evie asked Alexander, "Are you hungry? I'll cook you a bowl of noodles."

"Okay. Add more poached eggs." Alexander responded.

Evie nodded. She cleaned up and went downstairs with the first-aid kit.

She put the first-aid kit in the cupboard and went into the kitchen to cook noodles.

Evie sat at the dining table, watching Alexander eat noodles.

She still couldn't figure out how he had hit his face.

The only thing she could think of was that while he was walking, he was still reading documents or something. Then he ran into a lamppost?

The thought of that picture was funny.

And it was so incongruous with Alexander's usual cold and aloof posture.

She shook her head. She thought this possibility was too low.

Another possibility was that Alexander was walking, thinking about things, and then bumped into a wall.

Well, it seemed like that would hit the forehead, not the corner of the eye and mouth!

Evie imagined all the possible situations in her mind.

As a result, she scared herself into a sweat.

"Evie—"

"Huh?" Evie looked up in surprise.

"What's wrong? You've been shaking your head the whole time."

"I was just thinking—actually, I wasn't thinking about anything. Are the noodles good?"

"Your bowl is almost cold." Alexander said with a mix of tears and laughter.

"Oh!" Evie noticed that there was a bowl of noodles in front of her. She had forgotten about it.

She lowered her head and began to eat the noodles. She threw away those random thoughts and guesses in her mind.

After eating the noodles, Alexander consciously went to wash the dishes.

Evie still followed him. She just stood beside him, bored.

"What did you do at home today?"

"I stayed with Mom in the morning. I went back to my mother's house in the afternoon."

"Why didn't you call me? I would have picked you up."

"No, my father asked the driver to take me back." Evie answered.

Alexander nodded and said nothing.

Because Alexander started working on the third day of the new year, Evie found something to do by herself.

Alexander asked her if she wanted to go to the company together. But Evie refused. She said she wanted to read some books during this period. School was about to start.

So Evie stayed at home and read. In the afternoon, she went to the supermarket and bought some fruits.

She thought Alexander had been getting angry lately. She would buy some fruit to let him eat more. It would add some water and reduce his anger.

When she came out of the supermarket, she met Owen.

She almost didn't recognize Owen.

If it wasn't for him not only wearing sunglasses but also a mask, which made her feel strange and made her can't help looking at him more, she wouldn't have recognized him.

"Owen!" Evie was surprised. She walked around to the front of Owen and called him.

Owen couldn't help but cry out—
