Alexander Sterling was still in his office, working late.
His phone buzzed. It was Ethan.
He picked up.
“Uncle, it’s done. She gave up,” Ethan said, his voice full of triumph.
“Are you sure?” Alexander didn’t trust his nephew’s judgment.
“Of course. I described you as old, ugly, dirty, or maybe even gay.
If she agreed to that, she’s either crazy for money or just plain crazy.”
“What exactly did you say about me?” Alexander frowned.
“Nothing but nonsense. You asked me to handle it, and I did.
Now you have to keep your promise, Uncle.”
“I’ll have the secretary transfer the money tomorrow.”
“Thanks, Uncle. You’re the best.
Oh, and I’ll give you a little bonus.
That girl is pretty. She’s only twenty-one.
Sure you don’t want to think about it?” Ethan asked with a grin.
“If you like her, she’s yours.”
“Damn, I’m not worthy of that kind of blessing.”
“Ten thousand bucks.”
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I won’t curse anymore.” Ethan begged for mercy immediately.
“Anything else? Go home early. Don’t let Grandma worry.”
“Isn’t Grandma your mother too?”
“Ethan.”
“I know, I know. I’ll be home soon. Thanks, Uncle.”
Ethan hung up, satisfied.
He turned his phone camera to the front and took a selfie.
He almost threw up at his own reflection.
He had completely ruined his image just to get his uncle to pay for his trip around the sea.
It had taken him an entire afternoon to look this disgusting.
He needed to clean up fast, or he wouldn’t even be allowed inside the house.
If his uncle saw him like this, he’d get beaten for sure.
He had always been closest to his uncle, but he was also the most afraid of him.
To be honest, his uncle was only ten years older than him.
Just eight years old.
If his uncle weren’t so difficult, he would have thought they were a perfect match.
Evelyn arrived home.
Amelia rushed over, her voice eager.
“How did it go?”
“He didn’t come. His nephew did,” Evelyn said.
“What does that mean?” Amelia’s face fell with disappointment.
“He was already on a plane for a business trip. He sent his nephew instead.”
“Did you find out anything about him?”
“I did. He has some conditions.” Evelyn was honest.
Amelia’s heart sank.
“But I can accept them,” Evelyn added.
The Sterling family was forcing Mr. Sterling to get married because he was gay.
If that was true, her marriage to him would be nothing but a formality.
She would be a married woman, but at least it would help her family through this crisis.
After a while, Mr. Sterling would probably divorce her. After all, he liked men, not women. Then she would be free again.
So, if there was no other way, marrying into that family wasn’t the worst option.
“Really?” Amelia asked, disbelief in her voice.
“Yes. Tell Dad I agree to the marriage. Please take care of the family and help Dad get through this crisis as soon as possible.” Evelyn nodded.
“That’s wonderful, Evelyn. You are truly a good daughter.” Amelia’s voice was full of excitement.
“It’s fine. Mom, I’m going upstairs to rest.” Evelyn said.
