Chapter 72

Emma Johnson's expression was unreadable. "Liam, I'm sorry... Did I wake you? I saw some blood on the bandage, so I wanted to change it for you..."

"It's fine. My wounds heal fast. There's no need to worry." Liam Williams raised his hand and stared at his right hand, which was wrapped up like a massive dumpling. His face instantly darkened.

Seriously?

How did Emma manage to do this?

Was it really necessary to make such a big deal out of a tiny scratch?

With a grim expression, Liam got up, dressed himself, and headed straight for the bathroom.

Emma had woken up early and was already done with her morning routine. She got up, pushed open the glass door, and stepped onto the balcony, taking a deep breath of the crisp morning air.

It was early autumn. The air was fresh and cool, and a gentle breeze made the morning feel incredibly pleasant.

Emma looked up at the sky. The weather was much better today—bright and sunny. White clouds dotted the horizon, making the blue sky look crystal clear. Everything was quiet and serene. In the blink of an eye, the entire city had officially entered late autumn.

Liam came out and saw her standing on the balcony, lost in thought. He grabbed a black coat from the wardrobe, paused for a moment, but ultimately decided not to call out to her. He went downstairs alone.

But as he walked, the words Emma had said last night echoed in his mind, making him feel unsettled.

He skipped breakfast and drove to the company by himself.

When Emma changed her clothes and came downstairs, only Old Matthew was waiting for her at the door. She found it a bit strange. "Uncle Matthew, where's Mr. Williams?"

"The young master said there was something urgent at the company. He asked me to drive you to work today. He left first..."

"Oh, I see." Emma stopped in her tracks. Was Liam angry for the first time?

Ever since she had said those words last night, Liam had seemed like a different person. He had become quieter, but now he was even more silent. When he looked at her this morning, his deep eyes made her feel as if the air around them had frozen solid.

And now he was acting like this again? Sigh... Men's minds...

Emma curled her lips and got into the car.

New York Fashion Magazine.

Even though there was a lot of work to do, Emma stayed in the office all day without accomplishing much. She just sat there, chin resting on her hand, staring blankly into space. The entire magazine was buzzing with activity, but her office felt like nothing was happening.

At one point, Ava came in with several plans for her to review. Emma glanced at them casually, wasn't very satisfied, and rejected them all. She simply wasn't in the mood to keep working.

Thinking about how she hadn't been home in a while, she asked Joshua Harris for half a day off and headed back to the Johnson family home.

When Sophia Johnson saw her daughter, she was overjoyed. But the first thing she said was, "Where's my son-in-law? Didn't he come back with you?"

Emma shot her a glare. "Mom, are you saying I can't come back to see you just because Liam isn't here? Besides, I only came back to pick up some things."

She took off her coat and went straight to her room, acting as if someone owed her a fortune.

But James Johnson was very happy. He had always doted on Emma since she was a child. That evening, he specially made a large table full of dishes.

Sure enough, being at home was better. At the Williams' house, there were people watching her every move, and there were too many rules. She always felt uncomfortable there.

Seeing her family eating together happily, she temporarily forgot about that infuriating man, Liam. Her mood improved.

However, she didn't dare to stay too long. After dinner, she grabbed a few thick coats and took a taxi back home.

Pinnacle Corporation, Top Floor.

Liam had all of Emma's information in his hands. He had read Elijah Clark's file over and over again, but he couldn't find any clues. He was getting a bit bored.

Seeing that it was almost time to leave work, he still sat in his seat, not wanting to go home.

Christopher Martin stood beside him, silent, quietly waiting for Liam's orders.

Whenever Christopher saw Liam like this, he knew that this was not the time to talk too much. Otherwise, he would inevitably face a lot of criticism.

Liam threw the materials onto the table and lazily rubbed his temples with his left hand. He was feeling a bit annoyed.

Just then, Liam's phone rang, breaking the dull atmosphere in the room.

Liam glanced at the display and pressed the answer button. "Colonel, we've arrived in Silverdale now. The organization says you can do whatever you want, just catch the fox." Alexander Wilson's loud voice came from the other end of the phone.

"Alright, find a place to stay first. I'll get in touch with you if anything comes up."

"Yes, Colonel."

After having dinner at home, Emma slowly made her way back to the Williams' residence. When she entered the door, she was surprised to find no one home.

After asking the servants, she found out that Liam hadn't returned yet. Henry Williams had gone to the hospital for a check-up and wasn't expected back until very late. As for Benjamin Williams, there was no need to even mention him.

Emma put her clothes on the living room sofa but didn't go upstairs directly. After thinking for a moment, she slowly took out her phone from her pocket and dialed Liam's number.

She waited for a long time before the call was picked up. "What's the matter?" Liam's cold voice sounded like he was in a bad mood.

"Have you eaten yet? Why aren't you coming home? I went back to my mother's house today. My mother said she wants to see you..." Emma didn't really know what she was saying. She didn't understand why she felt the need to call him.

"I'll go home later next week when you're free. I'm out with some friends right now. If you're sleepy, don't wait for me. Go to bed first."

"...Oh, okay." Emma thought she heard a woman's voice on the other end. Her heart sank. Was Liam going to one of those places?

Was he just like Benjamin? Did he enjoy living a lavish lifestyle? No, he didn't seem like that.

Olivia Davis had once said that men who had been soldiers had much stronger desires.

Thinking back, Liam and she had been together for almost a month, and nothing had happened between them.

No wonder... He had said she didn't have to wait for him and could go to bed early.

No way. Liam was still her husband. At the very least, they slept in the same bed every day. If he was really having sex with other women...

The more she thought about it, the more uncomfortable she felt. She couldn't sit still any longer.

So, she called again. Without waiting for Liam to speak, she took the lead and said, "Well, Liam... It's been a bit cold lately. I'm afraid you might get cold. Or... should I bring you a coat?"

As she spoke, Emma had already restrained herself. At this moment, she had to stay calm and composed. She couldn't let Liam see any cracks in her facade.
