To be perfectly honest, he only discovered the president's divorce from the news reports. Even as his personal assistant, privy to secrets others wouldn't dream of, he knew the president was still fighting the divorce tooth and nail. No matter how many divorce papers his wife sent over, he tore every single one of them up in the end.
If he had to pinpoint a cause, he suspected it all started when the president's mother-in-law came to see him that time. Christopher Martin couldn't help but sigh. No one had ever imagined the president's wife was truly innocent. When he had dealings with her, he found her to be gentle-tempered and completely without airs. She was far more pleasant than Miss Isabella. Back then, he already felt she had nothing to do with those criminals.
Eventually, it was confirmed—she really was clean. But even though her innocence was proven, it had already destroyed the marriage between the president and her.
When you thought about it, it was probably just too much to bear.
Who could tolerate their partner approaching them with some hidden agenda? Even if the purpose behind it was to fight crime. No matter how noble the reason, how awe-inspiring the justice, deception was still deception. And hurt was still hurt.
So these days, Christopher always felt immense pressure whenever he faced the president. As if one wrong move would make the president lose his temper. And then he'd be the one to suffer.
But so far, the president really hadn't lashed out. It was just that his face was gloomy every day, and his aura was so oppressive that no employee dared to speak above a whisper.
"Go and take a good look. Find out who in the world leaked this matter."
Liam Williams's voice was calm, unaffected by the company's stock price. It was because these reports weren't true. Even if he had divorced Emma Johnson, there was still the possibility of remarriage. He just wanted to give himself and Emma a fresh start. Their divorce was a secret and wouldn't be announced for another two years.
Back then, Liam didn't believe he couldn't make Emma return to him.
So he never wanted their divorce to be made public. Externally, he still made others believe Emma was his wife.
But these scandals gave him a headache, especially the ones exposing Emma's connection to international crime. That was the most intolerable thing for him.
The thought of the public misunderstanding Emma made Liam furious. He wished he could dig three feet into the ground and drag the culprit out.
"Don't worry, sir. These media outlets aren't very well-known. If there's no backing behind them, they wouldn't have the guts to break this story. Within a day, I'll find out who's pulling the strings."
Christopher was very confident about this. After all, he had handled countless big and small matters for Liam. So it was only natural he had this ability. His words weren't an exaggeration. Liam nodded to him reassuringly, then left the company shortly after Christopher departed.
By this time, it was getting dark. He drove alone to an unfamiliar street. Soon, he arrived at a neighborhood, and before long, he spotted a woman in a white down jacket carrying a bag of groceries into the community.
For a moment, Liam wanted to open the car door and get out. But the thought of the resentful look in her eyes when she saw him made him retreat.
He thought, let's wait a while longer, until her resentment isn't so strong. Then he would approach her again. Not like the first time, when they met in a hurry and got their marriage certificate in a rush.
Watching the woman finally disappear into the community, Liam let out a deep sigh. His eyes were full of longing. But right now, he knew the time to approach her was far from ripe. No matter how much he loved the woman living alone in such a small apartment.
Emma Johnson opened the door to her apartment and stepped inside, taking off her white down jacket. The chill hadn't completely left her body, and she had forgotten to wear gloves. So while carrying the bag all the way home, her hands had turned icy cold. She couldn't help but breathe warm air into her palms, which eased the numbness a little.
She thought back to earlier, when she was shopping at the supermarket and ran into two reporters. She had almost been caught by them for an interview. Emma shuddered for a moment. It seemed that whenever she went out now, she would have to wear a mask.
After all, there had been so many scandals in the past two days. Their photos kept appearing in those gossip media outlets. No wonder more and more people recognized her. But fortunately, her parents had called her and comforted her, telling her not to be afraid of anything. Everything would pass.
That made Emma feel a little more at ease. Otherwise, if her parents were too worried, she would have to go and comfort them instead.
Although her mother had offered to let her move back home immediately, Emma had refused right away. This apartment was close to the Little Italy branch. It was only a ten-minute walk to the store, which was very convenient. Besides, she didn't have a car now, so she would have to take a taxi every day. It just wasn't worth it.
Emma was no longer a rich man's wife. Even though she wasn't short of money now, she couldn't just spend it carelessly. So her mother thought it over, looked at how well she was recovering, and agreed.
Actually, it wasn't that Emma didn't want to go back. It was that she suffered from insomnia almost every night. She couldn't sleep. She was even thinking of waiting until the scandal died down, then going to the hospital to have a check-up and ask for some sleeping pills. If her mother found out, she would be very worried.
Although coming back here every day, looking at the small but still empty room, Emma still wasn't quite used to it.
But she would get used to it one day.
Those pains would eventually form a scab in her heart. Even though they would leave a scar in the end. But it wouldn't be that deep.
Just like when Isabella Miller stole her fiancé. Back then, she was so miserable. But in the end, she got over it. Even when she heard the news of Noah Taylor's death, she was just stunned.
In fact, time never really heals wounds. All it can do is make you care less.
So Emma believed that one day, she wouldn't care so much about Liam Williams anymore. Or about the past when he hurt her.
She didn't know that just outside her apartment, a Land Rover was parked outside the community. Even though it was dark, it had been there for quite some time. It stayed until midnight, when she turned off the lights in her apartment and forced herself to sleep. Only then did the car finally slowly drive away from the busy street.
