"It seems Dr. Clark is so consumed by his work that he neglects his personal life. Emma often tells me she's always seen you as a brother. Seeing that you have no one to look after you, it's only natural for her to care. It appears Dr. Clark should settle down and get married soon."
Liam Williams's eyes were icy, his words dripping with cold sarcasm.
Hearing Liam say "brother," Elijah Clark's gaze turned dark and frigid. After exchanging a few more words, Liam left Elijah's home. Once back in his car, a plan began to form in his mind.
He thought he needed to do something to calm the storm inside him. That guy Elijah couldn't be allowed to have things too easy.
Liam pretended nothing had happened and returned to the company, not telling Emma Johnson that he had also visited Elijah's place. And he knew Elijah wouldn't mention it to her either.
When he came home that evening, Liam told Emma about the idea he had in mind. He wasn't surprised to see the shock on her face, though a chill settled in his heart, and he sneered inwardly.
"You want to set Elijah up with a girlfriend?"
Emma stared at Liam in surprise, unable to understand why he would suddenly suggest such a thing.
"Yes. The daughter of my father's old army buddy just returned from overseas. She's a year younger than Elijah. But she's excellent in every way. And her family runs a hospital, so I think the conditions are a perfect match."
Liam laid out his plan, waiting to see how Emma would react.
"But Elijah won't agree, will he?"
Emma blurted out instinctively, then noticed the man's displeased expression. She quickly clarified, afraid he might misunderstand.
"Don't get me wrong. I just mean that my good friend Mia likes Elijah, and she's been pursuing him. If we introduce someone else to him, it would be really hard for Mia to accept."
"But after all this time, Elijah still isn't with her. That means he doesn't feel the same way about Mia. Didn't you tell me it's not easy for him being alone in this city? It would be better to introduce him to a girlfriend with good connections, which could also help his career."
Liam said this with an air of finality.
Although Emma thought Liam's reasoning made some sense, she couldn't just explain it to Mia. So she still felt it was inappropriate.
"Don't worry, I won't let your friend know you had a hand in this."
Liam's tone left no room for argument, making Emma feel awkward. But if she voiced her opposition outright, she was afraid Liam would overthink things. He was already too quick to misunderstand her relationship with Elijah.
In the end, she had to stay silent. But Liam had already anticipated her reaction. He knew Emma wouldn't agree to his arrangement. As for her good friend Mia, Liam saw it as nothing more than an excuse Emma used to put him off.
After saying this, Liam went to his study. Although Emma felt the blind date Liam had arranged wasn't a good idea, he had said she wouldn't interfere. She couldn't say anything more. As for Mia, she didn't know what Elijah really thought. It seemed she would have to sound him out when she visited him tomorrow.
If he truly liked Mia, she would have a reason to ask Liam to call off the arrangement. If Elijah really only saw Mia as a friend, then she wouldn't feel too guilty about Liam's plan.
After thinking it over for a while, she pushed the matter aside and busied herself with knitting a scarf again.
She had wanted to knit a sweater, but unfortunately, her skills were very limited. So she could only manage something simple like a scarf, and she wasn't even sure if he would appreciate it.
But at least it was a token of her affection. If he dared to show any dislike, Emma vowed she would never knit again in her life.
The little kitten, seeing that Emma had suddenly stopped playing with her and was sitting to one side knitting, came over to meow. It even raised its tiny paw to step on the wool beside the bed.
This time, Emma didn't indulge it as she usually did. Instead, she picked it up and set it on the floor, her delicate, beautiful face wearing a rare look of seriousness.
"No. This is very important wool. If you damage it with your claws, I won't forgive you."
The little kitten meowed pitifully, deeply hurt. It glared at the wool on the bed with its cat eyes, unwilling to admit defeat to a mere ball of yarn.
When Liam finished his work in the study late at night and returned to the bedroom, Emma had already put away her wool and was fast asleep in bed.
After getting into bed, Liam habitually pulled Emma into his arms. Breathing in her faint, delicate fragrance, his heart was a tangled mess of conflicting emotions.
Many times, just when he thought he truly had Emma, fate would throw him a curveball, forcing him to soberly realize that her heart had never really been his.
Even if he had her body, he had lost her heart. What was the point?
"Sister Wei, are you okay lately? You don't look so well."
In the tea room, Emilia Clark looked at Emma with concern and asked. Emma looked at her strangely, then touched her own face.
"I don't think I look that bad. Nothing's been going on lately."
"Well, that's good then."
The smile on Emilia's lips was a little forced. She had already told the president, so why hadn't he made a move yet? Didn't he care?
If that was the case, no matter what she did, it would be useless.
Was Emma's charm really that insignificant to that man?
Emilia watched Emma, who was sipping her tea, and fell into deep thought.
If that was the case, there was nothing more to be done. The president would abandon her one day. For now, though, it didn't seem likely to happen.
But Emma was now thinking about Elijah. She felt she had to find out at noon today whether he liked Mia or not. Normally speaking, Mia's conditions were excellent—she came from a good family and was beautiful. In the past, talent scouts were always handing her business cards, asking her to sign a contract. But Mia was only interested in food, so she only wanted to open restaurants.
She thought Mia's conditions were probably better than the daughter of Liam's father's army buddy.
Even if she wasn't the daughter of a hospital director, she was still undeniably a wealthy, beautiful woman.
Such conditions were truly hard to come by. If she were Elijah, she would be moved by Mia.
