In this world, only Emma Johnson could ever make him change his mind.
But when night fell and Emma wanted to take the kitten to bed, Liam Williams refused. The feeling of being ignored was unbearable. Besides, the soft moonlight on a snowy night was the perfect time for them to be alone. A cat would only be a nuisance.
So this time, President Liam didn't agree at all. He forced the cat out of the bedroom and handed it to a servant.
Emma listened to the kitten's reluctant meows and stared at Liam speechlessly.
"It's just a cat. Aren't I enough for you?"
"What do you think?"
A charming smile curled at the corner of Liam's lips. His eyes shimmered like clear light, intoxicating anyone who looked.
Emma felt her heart skip a beat. She couldn't help but think—this man. How was he any different from a child throwing a tantrum for candy?
After a few days in Silverdale, they flew back to City A.
Before boarding the plane, Emma couldn't help but notice Christopher Martin's unusual enthusiasm. He kept asking if she wanted coffee. Even though someone had already moved her luggage, he insisted on helping.
"Is your assistant okay? Has he been under some kind of stress lately?"
Watching Christopher, who was acting completely out of character, Emma asked Liam in confusion.
"Maybe."
Liam glanced at Christopher briefly, then returned his attention to the international financial news on his phone.
Emma was left wondering what had caused Christopher's sudden strange behavior.
When they returned to City A, she didn't stay home to rest. Instead, she started going back to work with Liam every day. Emilia Clark found Emma in the break room and asked her.
"Sister Wei, did you know Brother Elijah is sick?"
Emma was taken aback by Emilia's words.
"Is Elijah sick?"
"Yeah. I heard it from a nurse at the hospital yesterday afternoon. They said Brother Elijah caught a bad cold and is resting at home now."
"I just got back. I haven't had time to call him yet."
Thinking of Elijah alone at home, Emma left the break room to call him.
"Hello."
His voice on the phone sounded weak. Emma could tell his cold was serious.
"I heard from Emilia that you're sick. How are you? Is it bad?"
Emma asked.
"Not too bad."
Elijah barely said two words before he started coughing violently. Emma thought, This doesn't sound good. It's really serious.
After hanging up, Emma thought about Elijah being alone at home. She decided to visit him at noon. But she couldn't tell Liam the truth. Just as she was racking her brain for an excuse, it turned out Liam had a lunch meeting with a client. She didn't have to lie.
This time, Emma drove to Elijah's house. Alexander Wilson wasn't following her. He was in Italy, investigating the Black Feather's base there. He wouldn't be back for months.
Emma arrived at Elijah's home. She rang the doorbell, and it took a long time for the door to open. When it finally did, Elijah looked terrible. He was clearly very sick.
Otherwise, he wouldn't have taken so long to answer the door.
"Weiwei?"
Elijah looked surprised to see Emma at his door. He was both shocked and happy that she had come.
"I was worried, so I came to check on you."
Emma walked into Elijah's house, carrying two bags. One contained cold medicine she had bought from the pharmacy, and the other was full of various health foods.
Elijah looked at Emma, a warm feeling rising in his eyes. He knew that in Weiwei's heart, she still cared about him. Even though she was married and had become someone else's wife.
But the friendship they had built growing up was something no one could replace.
"It's just a cold. I'll be fine in a few days. It's nothing serious."
Elijah followed behind Emma as she placed the items on the coffee table in front of the sofa. He said with a smile.
Emma accidentally noticed a few empty instant noodle cups in the trash can. Her face immediately darkened.
"You know you're sick, and you're still eating this junk food? You don't take your body seriously at all."
Hearing Emma's scolding, Elijah wasn't angry. On the contrary, he felt happy. Because only someone who cared would talk to him like that.
Even though he didn't want Emma to see the instant noodle cups in the trash.
Emma looked at Elijah and finally let out a helpless sigh. "Come on, you're a grown man. You can't even take care of yourself. And you're a doctor. I really don't know who will marry you in the future. You'll drive them crazy."
"If someone married me, I wouldn't be like this."
Elijah quickly defended himself, afraid Emma would misunderstand. But Emma looked at him with obvious distrust. That was a huge blow to Elijah.
Emma walked to the refrigerator and opened it. Inside, besides the instant noodles, there were only a few Japanese sushi rolls and two apples. She shook her head and closed the refrigerator door.
"Take your medicine first."
Emma took out the cold medicine from the bag and placed it on the coffee table. Then she walked to the porch to put on her shoes.
"Are you leaving?"
Elijah asked reluctantly. Looking at Emma's work clothes, he knew she must have come during her lunch break. But he hadn't expected her to leave so soon.
"I'm going to the market. You need to eat properly. Only then will you recover faster. Don't forget to open the door for me."
Emma answered him and walked out, closing the door behind her.
I see. Elijah was a little surprised. Weiwei can cook now. It seemed that time really could change a person's habits. But he didn't want to think about whether she had learned to cook because of Liam. The more he thought about it, the more uncomfortable he felt.
He coughed again. If he hadn't gone to that warehouse at night for the arms deal, wearing too little, he wouldn't have caught this cold.
Fortunately, the transaction had gone smoothly. The police hadn't found out.
Otherwise, his abilities might have been questioned by the boss.
