Chapter 356

The two of them were locked in a tense standoff when the doorbell suddenly rang.

Liam went to answer it. It was Amelia.

"Brother, did you find your sister-in-law? I've been calling you. You never answered. I was so worried."

Amelia's clear voice carried a hint of anxiety. Liam nodded at her.

"She's in the bedroom now."

Amelia hurried into the bedroom and saw Emma, who had just gotten out of bed. She rushed over to check on her, finally letting out a sigh of relief.

"I'm so glad you're okay, sister-in-law. I was really worried. I thought something terrible had happened to you. After all, you came with me to the villa yesterday. If anything had gone wrong, I would have felt so guilty."

Amelia's eyes were full of concern. Emma looked at her with a complicated expression. Although Amelia seemed innocent, she was the one who had followed her to the banquet, which had led to the current situation.

So seeing Amelia at this moment made Emma feel a tightness in her chest.

"Where did you go, sister-in-law? Was it in that villa? I haven't called my classmates yet. I don't know what's going on."

Amelia blinked her innocent eyes, looking at Emma.

"I'm fine. I just fell asleep in your classmate's villa."

Emma didn't tell Amelia that Elijah had been there. Otherwise, Amelia would have made a big fuss about it. Waking up in the morning, Emma was already feeling very unsettled. She didn't want any extra trouble.

"Your sister-in-law needs to rest at home. Xiaoyue, I'll take you to the store."

Liam didn't look at Emma but spoke directly to Amelia. Emma watched his cold profile.

"Okay. Sister-in-law, you should rest well at home. I'll go with big brother first."

Amelia was very happy when she heard that Liam wanted to drive her. Her voice was light as she said goodbye to Emma.

Watching the two of them leave, Emma suddenly had an illusion. Amelia had come to see her, but it was clear she really wanted to see Liam.

She shook her head, feeling a dull ache in her temples. She went to pour herself a glass of water and found a headache pill to take. Feeling hungry, she looked at the empty kitchen. She knew Liam hadn't prepared any food for her. So she opened the refrigerator, took out two tomatoes and eggs, and made a simple egg drop soup. She also cooked a bowl of noodles for herself.

Now, even without Liam, she could cook for herself.

Looking at it from another perspective, marrying Liam had actually improved her cooking skills. That was a kind of gain.

Thinking of Liam's cold face when he left in the morning, Emma didn't understand why things had turned out like this again. She suddenly remembered the red wine Liam had mentioned to her before. The more she thought about it, the more she felt something was wrong.

Even if she had been very sleepy yesterday, she shouldn't have slept so deeply. Besides, she hadn't been very busy during the day. Instead, she had felt tired after drinking the red wine.

Could there really be something wrong with the red wine?

But Liam hadn't said anything.

Emma racked her brains for a long time but couldn't figure it out. Finally, she called Elijah.

"Emma."

Elijah's voice came through the phone.

"Elijah, I have something to ask you."

Emma said.

"You want to ask about last night? Is Liam angry with you? Because he can't be nice to you."

Elijah seemed to have eyes that could see through everything, knowing about her confrontation with Liam that morning. Emma was stunned, wondering how he had guessed. Had something happened last night that she didn't know about?

"What's going on?"

"Nothing much. It's just that we were followed. And the evidence was destroyed."

Elijah's voice carried a hint of coldness as he told Emma about what had happened last night. Emma only then realized that not only had she fallen asleep, but Elijah had also fallen asleep. If that was the case, something was definitely wrong.

They had only drunk half a bottle of red wine. How could they both have been knocked out?

Besides, both she and Elijah had decent alcohol tolerance. Even if they had gotten drunk, it wouldn't have been like this. If the evidence was destroyed, it meant the wine had been tampered with. No wonder Liam had misunderstood. Because the people he had sent hadn't found anything in the wine. And when he had found her last night, he had seen her in the same room as Elijah.

Even if she and Elijah were innocent, Liam wouldn't be happy.

Emma put herself in his shoes. If Liam were lying on the bed with another woman, even if she were fully dressed, she would be devastated.

If Liam was feeling the same way, she could understand his attitude toward her this morning.

Emma reached out and rubbed her temples. She closed her eyes, feeling a headache coming on. There was no way to explain this kind of thing at all. In fact, trying to explain would only make things more confusing. How could she make Liam stop misunderstanding her?

"Emma, are you okay?"

Not getting a reply from Emma for a long time, Elijah asked worriedly.

"I'm fine. Elijah, I'm so sorry. Liam must have said some cold things to you. I'll explain it to him clearly. Even if there's no evidence, I can't let him misunderstand us like this." Emma finished speaking and hung up.

On the other end of the line, Elijah listened to the beeping sound from the phone and couldn't help but smile bitterly.

In fact, he had wanted to make Liam think that he and Emma were a couple. But using such a mean method was not what he had wanted to see.

Emma couldn't stay at home any longer. She thought she should go to the company. So she went to work as usual.

Emilia saw Emma coming out of the elevator in the Executive Secretariat and went up to greet her.

"Sister Wei, are you okay? I thought you were going to rest at home."

Emma smiled at her.

"I'm fine. I'm not so delicate that I can't go to work."

"I'm glad you're okay. But Sister Wei, the president seems to be in a bad mood today. Be careful when you go in. But you're his wife, so he shouldn't be angry with you."

Emilia showed a look of lingering fear.

"Okay, I understand."

Emma thought that perhaps the most likely reason was because of her. She couldn't help but sigh.

When she opened the door, Liam was surprised to see Emma at the door. At the same time, his cold face became even more icy.
