Chapter 307

"Should we schedule a press conference to clarify this to the media?"

After Christopher left, Emma asked Liam.

"No. Mason's statement will be enough."

Liam pulled her onto his lap with a casual sweep of his arm.

Emma's cheeks flushed. Even though she knew Amelia wouldn't appear tonight, she still felt embarrassed.

"What are you doing? This is the office, not our home."

She struggled slightly in his arms.

"Does that mean I can do whatever I want at home?"

His eyes sparkled like stars, and the look was intoxicating.

Emma froze. She hadn't said anything like that. How did he twist her words so easily?

To stop him from saying something that would make her blush even more, she quickly changed the subject.

"Liam, from what Christopher said, does that mean we still can't find the person behind all this?"

It worked. His attention shifted.

"That man is cautious and cunning. But since he's targeted you once, he'll try again. Someone like that is dangerous. No matter what it takes, I'll find him. I even suspect your accident in Silverdale was connected to him."

Emma nodded. His reasoning made sense. She couldn't have that many enemies. It was probably all the same person.

But who would want to ruin her—or even kill her?

She couldn't think of anyone.

"I wish we could find him soon. I'm always afraid something will happen next."

She sighed.

Liam held her tighter, but his eyes were complicated. He felt like Emma was hiding too many things from him. After all, she was connected to the Fox Hunt case, which meant she had plenty of enemies. But she couldn't tell him everything—if she did, she'd be completely exposed.

That was why he could never find the man in the shadows. He had no solid leads. Every clue led to a dead end.

The people they caught were just pawns.

That afternoon, Emma chatted with Emilia in the break room.

When Emilia heard that Emma had found the anonymous blogger, she was relieved.

"That's great. I was so worried about what would show up on Weibo tomorrow. It's terrifying. Now that you've caught the blogger, you don't have to worry about people gossiping. You're innocent, after all."

"Yeah, I can finally sleep well tonight. But we still haven't found the person behind it all. I don't know who keeps setting me up. It's a terrible feeling."

Emma sighed.

"Don't worry, Emma. Justice will catch up with them eventually."

Emilia poured her a cup of coffee.

Emma hoped she was right. Otherwise, she'd never know what would happen next.

At the end of the workday, a thin girl stood on the rooftop of the Pinnacle Corporation building, talking on her phone.

"Boss, it failed again. But Mr. Williams didn't find me. Don't worry. Next time, I'll find a better opportunity."

Her voice was respectful.

"Remember, I gave you your life. Don't let any chance slip by. I want that woman dead. Understand?"

The hoarse voice on the other end was unusually excited, but it still sounded like a cold snake's tongue, making people shiver.

The girl trembled involuntarily. After promising repeatedly, she let the other party hang up in satisfaction.

It was getting dark.

Emma and Liam returned to Sunrise Manor, but Amelia wasn't in the living room. A maid said she had stayed in bed all day.

Liam nodded faintly. He didn't say anything about going upstairs to check on her.

Instead, Emma took the initiative. She thought Amelia should have recovered by now. But from what the maid said, it sounded like she was getting worse.

"Sister-in-law."

Amelia's voice was dull when she saw Emma. Her face wasn't as swollen, but she clearly had no energy.

"How are you feeling? The maid said you barely ate all day. That's not good."

Emma's concern was genuine.

"I don't have much of an appetite. I'm fine, really."

Amelia forced a smile.

Emma didn't know how to persuade her.

"Come downstairs and have dinner with us. I asked the kitchen to make all your favorites."

Amelia hesitated. There was a flicker of disappointment in her eyes—probably because it was Benjamin who had ordered the dinner, not Liam. But she nodded.

Emma was relieved. At least getting Amelia out of bed was better than letting her lie alone in her room.

When Amelia came downstairs and saw Liam, her expression changed.

"Big brother."

She didn't run up to him like before. Liam just answered faintly, his attitude cold.

Emma noticed the strange tension between them. She wondered what had happened.

During dinner, Benjamin kept putting food on Amelia's plate, but she barely ate. Before everyone finished, she stood up.

"Xiaoyue, aren't you eating anymore?"

Emma asked.

Amelia shook her head, said goodbye, and went upstairs.

Before leaving, she glanced at Liam. She clearly hoped he would say something. But he never looked at her.

Finally, she bit her lip and went back to her room.
