Liam Williams could see that Emma Johnson wasn't planning to say anything more to him, so he didn't press further. However, after Emma lay down on the bed and quickly fell asleep, he left the bedroom and called for a servant. He asked what she had done at home during the day.
"Madam didn't rest at all today, sir. She's been with Miss Amelia the whole day."
Charlotte, the maid, told Liam everything about Emma from morning until she returned at night. After listening to her report, Liam's expression darkened.
"I understand. You may go."
Liam waved his hand, and Charlotte headed downstairs.
Instead of going to his study to work, Liam went straight to Amelia's bedroom.
"Brother, why are you here?"
Amelia was sitting on the bed reading a book. When she saw Liam push the door open, she couldn't help looking both surprised and delighted. She closed the book in her hand and stared at Liam without blinking.
"Just came to check on you. How are you feeling?"
"Much better. The medicine Dr. Moore prescribed is working very well."
A sweet smile spread across Amelia's face, looking much healthier than she had that morning.
"Did you take your evening medicine?"
"Yes."
Amelia felt her happiness was about to overflow from Liam's attention. The sickly look on her face had faded, and her whole being seemed to glow with a different radiance.
"Amelia."
Liam's face was expressionless, but now he suddenly looked at Amelia with a serious gaze, which caught her off guard.
"Brother, what's wrong?"
Amelia looked at Liam, confused.
"Don't you believe that what happened the night before last was just your sister-in-law's carelessness?"
Liam stared at Amelia's face, his eyes burning.
Amelia on the bed couldn't help but freeze, and the smile on her face stiffened for a moment.
"Brother, I've already said I believe my sister-in-law. How could I doubt her?"
An unnatural expression flickered across Amelia's face.
"If that's the case, then why did you ask Emma to accompany you this morning? Even if you're ill, you had her doing things a maid would do. Is it because we don't have enough servants? You even made her sit by your bed while you slept and stay with you the whole time?"
Liam's voice was cold, as if the air in the room had frozen solid. Amelia, who had been feeling better, suddenly felt an indescribable chill.
"Brother, I didn't. I'm just sick. I wanted my sister-in-law to keep me company. Did my sister-in-law tell you that? Doesn't she like being with me? If that's the case, then don't let my sister-in-law accompany me anymore."
Amelia's face took on a look of grievance, and tears began to fall uncontrollably. She looked pitiful.
"Fine, that's settled then. I let Emma stay home to rest. In that case, I might as well have her come to the company with me. She won't need to stay home with you starting tomorrow."
Amelia had only said that in passing, hoping to calm Liam's anger. But she never expected Liam to agree with her directly. Now Amelia was stunned, staring at Liam blankly. For a moment, she couldn't react.
"Brother, do you really think I asked my sister-in-law to accompany me out of revenge? How could you think of me that way? I don't hate my sister-in-law."
An expression of disbelief spread across Amelia's face.
"Whether you like her or hate her, Amelia, I want you to remember this: she is your sister-in-law and my wife. And today, your sister-in-law didn't say a single word to me about this. As for how I know, there are plenty of servants in this house. I just had to ask someone to make it clear. I watched you grow up. When you're sick, you're so picky about food, and even when you're feeling better, you insist on going out for a walk. Some words should stop here. Think about it yourself."
With those words, Liam left Amelia's bedroom.
Only Amelia remained sitting on the bed, clutching the quilt tightly in her hands, biting her upper lip with her lower teeth. She almost broke the skin on her upper lip before finally letting go.
Liam returned to the bedroom where Emma was sleeping. Looking at the delicate face of the little woman lying on the bed, he couldn't help but lean down and kiss her cheek.
Then he let out a sigh. It was as if he was talking to himself, and also as if he was speaking to the woman lying in bed.
"How can I know things you don't tell me? Even if I'm skilled in psychology, I'm not a prophet, and I don't have x-ray vision. How much do you want to hide from me, all your grievances and forbearance?"
Liam's low voice echoed slowly through the room. The only answer was the sound of Emma's breathing.
The next day, Emma got up and planned to go to Amelia's room. But Liam told her to let Amelia rest well in her own room. She didn't need to go there so early, so she went downstairs to have breakfast with Liam first.
At breakfast, Emma ate a lot. She was afraid that when it was time for Amelia to eat, she would have to feed her, and the meal would drag on for over two hours. Then she wouldn't have time to eat again.
But she didn't expect that after dinner, Liam would ask her to go to work with him, which surprised Emma.
"I promised Amelia I would stay home with her. If I go to the company with you just one day later, how am I supposed to explain it to her?"
Emma looked at Liam helplessly, feeling that this man was too fickle. Besides, his sister was the one who needed company. The company could run normally without her, couldn't it? Why did she have to go to the company?
"I already spoke to Amelia yesterday. She said she could manage at home. When you're ready, get in the car with me."
Liam didn't explain anything to Emma, just said it lightly.
As soon as Emma heard that, she knew he had already arranged everything. Although she didn't know why Amelia would agree, she did feel that going to the company was better than staying at home.
After all, she wasn't a professional nurse. It was hard for her to stay with Amelia for more than ten hours a day.
She wanted to see Amelia in her room, but the servant said she was still sleeping. Emma had no choice but to leave.
When she arrived at the company with Liam, Emma saw Emilia Clark in the executive secretariat. Emilia greeted Emma with a happy face, and Emma smiled back at her.
After entering the office with Liam, Liam didn't assign her any work. He just made himself a cup of coffee.
