"Amelia, are you alright?"
At Sunrise Manor, Henry Williams looked at his youngest daughter with concern as she returned.
He had heard on the phone earlier that she had fallen down the stairs, and it had nearly scared him to death. But looking at her now, she seemed fine.
"Father, I'm fine. But why do you have so much gray hair?"
Amelia White had a sweet smile on her face, but confusion flickered in her eyes.
"Amelia, you have selective amnesia. Right now, your memory only goes back to when you were eighteen."
Instead of hiding the truth, Liam Williams decided to tell her directly. That way, she would be mentally prepared to face certain situations better.
"Selective amnesia?"
Amelia stared blankly at Liam, then seemed to think too hard, and her head began to ache again.
She pounded her head in pain, but Benjamin Williams quickly reached out to stop her.
"Take the young lady back to her room and let her rest. Liam, come with me."
Henry Williams instructed the servants, while Benjamin himself took Amelia upstairs. Before heading up, Amelia glanced at Liam. When her gaze landed on Emma Johnson standing nearby, her eyes still held a strange unfamiliarity. She quickly turned her head and followed Benjamin upstairs.
"What happened? I heard Amelia lost her footing and fell down the stairs after an argument with Emma?"
Once inside the study, Henry Williams looked seriously at Liam and asked.
"There was just a misunderstanding between them, which led to a quarrel. Amelia's temper got the better of her, and she accidentally fell."
Liam explained to the old man.
Henry sighed helplessly upon hearing this.
"Regardless, Amelia was hurt. Don't forget how Amelia came into our family. No matter what, nothing like this can happen again. Otherwise, how will I ever explain it to Amelia's father in the future? That was the only thing he asked of me before he died."
Henry leaned back in his chair, closing his eyes, his furrowed brow seeming to recall a painful past.
"I understand. It was just an accident. It won't happen again."
"I hope so."
Outside, Emma Johnson quietly closed the door that hadn't been shut tightly. She then returned to the sofa in the living room and sat down, replaying the conversation she had just overheard. It seemed she would have to be more careful with Amelia in the future. She hoped Amelia's amnesia would improve soon.
"Why are you sitting here? It's getting late. Go back to your room and rest."
Just as Emma was lost in her thoughts on the sofa, Liam's voice rang in her ears. She looked up at the handsome man in front of her and slowly stood up.
"Thank you, Liam."
That was what she meant. If it hadn't been for Liam speaking up for her, she would have been torn apart. Just the look in Benjamin's eyes was terrifying, making Emma feel as if he might shoot her the next moment.
"Don't think about it. It doesn't have much to do with you."
Liam looked at Emma's troubled expression and sighed inwardly. He reached out and touched her soft black hair. Emma felt embarrassed. Why did she feel like she was being treated like a child?
"Butler White, have the kitchen prepare some food and bring it to my room."
After giving the order, Liam took Emma's hand and led her upstairs to his room.
"Let's go see Amelia."
Emma's hand was held in Liam's broad palm, and she no longer felt so cold.
"She should be asleep by now. It can wait until tomorrow."
Liam didn't change direction. Shortly after returning to the bedroom with Emma, the kitchen brought up the food.
Emma looked at the food in front of her but had no appetite at all.
Today's accident still felt unbelievable to her. Thinking of the strange look in Amelia's eyes and the loss within them, her heart was filled with guilt.
After all, she felt responsible for this matter. If she hadn't been in a bad mood and argued with Amelia, maybe she wouldn't have angered her.
If they hadn't fought, how could they have rolled down the stairs?
"The food is getting cold. Why aren't you eating?"
Liam put a piece of food on Emma's plate.
"I really don't have an appetite. I can't eat anymore."
Emma pushed the bowl aside and shook her head at Liam.
In fact, she hadn't eaten anything since noon. She had been hungry before, but now she just couldn't bring herself to eat.
Seeing how thin her face was, Liam knew he couldn't force her, so he asked the servants to clear the food. He only took a couple of bites himself.
After washing up and brushing their teeth, they lay down in bed and went to sleep. In the middle of the night, Emma felt thirsty. She got up and looked at the sleeping man beside her. She didn't wake him. Quietly, she went downstairs to the kitchen to get some water.
When she reached the stairs, she was startled by a slender figure in the living room and stumbled onto the corridor.
The living room lights were soon turned on by the servants, and Liam and Benjamin quickly came out.
"Amelia, why are you here?"
Benjamin asked with concern when he saw Amelia standing barefoot in the living room in her pajamas.
"I... I just couldn't sleep. So I wanted to come out for a walk."
Amelia looked like a child who had done something wrong, standing there looking at them at a loss.
"Did I disturb you? Brother, is sister-in-law okay?"
Amelia's tone was noticeably stiff and unnatural when she said the word "sister-in-law." Now that she was eighteen, she wasn't so quick to accept new family members.
"Are you worried about someone else? Amelia, it's okay. I'll take you back to your room."
Benjamin clearly thought that Emma had startled Amelia. Emma felt helpless. She had just wanted to get a drink. Who would have thought this kind of accident would happen out of nowhere?
"I didn't mean to scare Amelia. I didn't expect her to be unable to sleep in the living room."
Emma explained to Liam.
"I understand. If you're hungry, go to the kitchen and get something to eat."
Liam walked down the stairs and looked at Emma, who was still sitting on the steps. He reached out his hand to her and pulled her up.
"I just wanted a drink."
"But I want to eat."
Emma was speechless. Well, why didn't you just say you were hungry? Instead, you used me as an excuse.
The kitchen lights were bright. When Emma finished her second bowl of tomato and egg noodles, she realized she really didn't want to eat anymore. She had just discovered how hungry she actually was.
