Liam reached out to check Emma's forehead temperature. The fever had subsided considerably, but Emma seemed even more drained than before.
"Liam, what if I'm pregnant?"
Emma suddenly looked up at him. Liam's hand stiffened as he felt her forehead. The hesitation in his eyes didn't escape Emma's notice, and a bitter, indescribable feeling welled up in her chest.
She had already considered that being pregnant didn't necessarily mean she would keep the child, but the man's reaction still left her feeling disappointed. It was clear now—no matter how far her relationship with Liam progressed, he would never truly love her.
But Liam was thinking about what would happen if Emma were carrying his child. Of course, he would want her to keep the baby, but this sensitive period wasn't ideal.
"If you're pregnant, you'll naturally have to give birth. Isn't the old man always urging us to give him a chubby grandson?"
Liam kissed Emma and spoke to her gently.
But Emma didn't believe him anymore. She forced a faint smile, said she was tired, and turned over to rest in bed.
Liam didn't want to disturb her, so he quietly left the room. Just then, his phone rang. Seeing the caller was Christopher, he headed to the study to take the call.
"Sir, Mr. Jameson, the chief designer for our clothing brand, says his inspiration for the winter collection has hit a wall. He needs at least another month beyond the usual deadline. I'm afraid our winter exhibition will be delayed."
"That's fine. Let him rest. For an artist of his caliber, inspiration is the lifeblood of creation. We've worked together long enough—postponing once won't hurt."
"Understood, sir."
Christopher hung up and relayed Liam's instructions to Jameson.
Three days later, Emma finally recovered. That day, Emilia, who had just been discharged from the hospital, came to visit her.
"Sister Wei, you're finally better. You're really different from others—they recover from a cold in a few days, but you need at least a week. Winter's coming, so you have to bundle up when you go out."
Emilia said to Emma with concern.
"I won't get sick again this time. Don't worry."
Emma smiled and then asked about Emilia's recent situation. Emilia's expression turned a bit troubled.
"Sister Wei, you know my family is very ordinary. I used to be sick all the time, lying in bed almost every day. Now that I'm home, I have nothing to do. It's not easy to find a job. But I'm really anxious—my family has spent all their savings and even owes a lot of money to treat me. Now that I'm healthy, I can't keep dragging them down."
Emilia didn't hide her situation from Emma and spoke honestly.
"Why don't you come work at my company? I'll ask the boss to arrange a position for you. How about you assist me for now?"
Emilia smiled awkwardly.
"Sister Wei, you're the editor-in-chief of a fashion magazine. You know that working at your magazine requires not only a sense of fashion but also solid writing skills. My level would only cause you trouble and wouldn't help me much either."
Emma thought she had a point, but if Emilia didn't go to New York Fashion Magazine, how could she find a suitable position?
Suddenly, she remembered that Liam's Pinnacle Corporation was huge, with many different subsidiaries under it. There was bound to be a position suitable for Emilia.
"Otherwise, I'll talk to Liam and ask him to arrange a position for you at Pinnacle Corporation."
Emma said to Emilia.
"Really? Pinnacle Corporation is a world-renowned company. Can I qualify with my background and education?"
"There shouldn't be a problem. Besides, you can learn a lot there, which will also be very helpful for your career."
"Sister Wei, thank you so much."
"It's nothing. We're friends."
And so it was settled. When Emma talked to Liam that evening, he readily agreed. After all, she was Emma's friend—arranging a position was no big deal.
"I heard she gets along well with Amelia. Recently, Amelia has been working in China, and they'd make good partners."
"Your sister went to China too?"
Emma hadn't expected that.
"Yes. She hasn't looked for a job since she came back, and she has no intention of starting her own company. It's rare that she took the initiative to come to the company to learn. I discussed it with the old man, and we thought it was a good idea. Later, when she came out, she took over a subsidiary under Pinnacle and renamed it Whitewood."
Liam said it casually. But Emma thought to herself—Amelia probably had ulterior motives, but Liam either didn't realize it or, if he did, he never took it seriously.
"You've been in poor health lately, and there have always been problems. I think it's better for you to quit your job at New York Fashion Magazine. After a few months of rest, if you still want to work, I can arrange another job for you."
Liam suddenly said these words. Emma, holding her chopsticks, paused mid-air as she was about to eat the shrimp Liam had just peeled for her. She froze, the shrimp hovering over the dish.
"You want me to resign?"
"I'm doing this for your health."
"I worked at New York Fashion Magazine for so many years before I earned the position of editor-in-chief. I'm not going to quit."
Emma strongly disagreed.
"If you like New York Fashion Magazine, I'll buy it and make you the boss."
Instead of pleasing Emma, Liam's words only made her angrier.
"Liam, don't think you can solve everything with money. I cherish my work at New York Fashion Magazine because I have feelings for it. You wouldn't understand. I'm full. Eat by yourself."
Emma put the shrimp back on the plate, leaving most of her rice untouched. She stormed out of the living room.
Liam sighed helplessly, thinking about what Dr. Moore had told him yesterday.
"Mr. Williams, Mrs. Williams's original physical condition was quite good. But due to the series of recent events, her immunity has dropped significantly. Especially lately, there's a chill in her body, which is very harmful for women. I suggest that Mrs. Williams not overexert herself and rest at home for at least half a year. It will make it easier for you to have children later."
