Chapter 161

Christopher Martin poured a cup of hot water and set it on the table. Watching Liam Williams' pale face, worry flickered in his eyes, but his voice remained steady and low. "Emma is fine, sir. The situation has been explained clearly. However, the media is expected to report the news about your wife's accident today."

"Right. The transportation department hasn't called yet. You can come with me later to see what's going on. The efficiency of these people is getting worse and worse."

Liam's anger simmered just beneath the surface. It had been hours since Emma Johnson's accident. The driver who hit her had fled the scene, and the transportation department still hadn't given him a clear answer.

Would he have to handle this himself?

Christopher nodded. "I'll go prepare and wait for you downstairs. But sir, you don't look well. Would you like to rest a bit and go this afternoon instead?"

He was genuinely concerned for Liam's health. Since his wife was no longer in immediate danger, they could take their time investigating.

After all, with Liam's background, there was no way the perpetrator could escape.

"No. Let's go now. Does the company have any plans today?" Liam raised his hand to check his watch. It was still early. If there was something urgent at Pinnacle Corporation, he could deal with it first.

"You forgot, sir? Because of your wedding, I've cleared your schedule for the entire week. There was an important shareholders' meeting, but it's been postponed." Christopher glanced down at the tablet in his hand.

"Good. Let's go." Liam barely had time to sit before he was heading downstairs with Christopher.

"Mr. Williams, it's not that we haven't been trying. Based on surveillance footage, our people have identified the vehicle involved in yesterday's accident." The traffic police captain, Kevin Harris, said helplessly. "We went to the owner's house, but only his son and wife were home. It seems he's either fled or gone into hiding."

"Fled? Can he really escape?" Liam's face turned cold and stern. The dangerous edge in his voice made everyone in the room hold their breath.

The captain grew uneasy. "Mr. Williams, we've already dispatched ten patrol cars to search the city. We'll inform you as soon as we have any results. What do you think?"

"Ten?" Liam's tone was laced with displeasure.

City A was one of the largest cities in the country. Yet this man was telling him he'd only sent ten cars to find the culprit?

"Captain Harris... I don't know who told you to handle things this way, but you clearly don't know how I operate. I will find this man. You have two days—today and tomorrow. If I don't see him by then, you can pack your things and leave." Liam never minced words. A mere traffic police captain meant nothing to him. Even if the minister himself showed up, he'd have to tread carefully around Liam's status.

"Yes, sir. I'll deploy every available officer immediately. We'll do our best to find him by tomorrow."

"I'll be waiting for a satisfactory answer." Liam's face was expressionless, his voice ice-cold.

Fled? Hah!

No one had ever escaped from him.

Everyone in the traffic police station watched Liam and Christopher leave. It was a long time before the tension in the room finally eased.

The murderous look on Liam's face just now had terrified everyone present.

Once they were in the car, Christopher glanced at Liam in the passenger seat. "Sir, shall we go to the company now?"

Liam didn't answer. He sat motionless, as if he hadn't heard a word.

It had only been a few minutes since they left the hospital, but a strange unease had already settled in his chest.

Would Emma wake up today?

The doctor said she wouldn't be in a coma for long. Was anyone taking care of her right now?

His thoughts grew chaotic, as if some invisible force was pulling him in different directions.

He couldn't focus on work. Not at all.

Liam stared out the window, lost.

Where should he go next?

Back to the hospital?

But he'd only been gone for less than an hour.

For the first time, Liam realized he was acting like this. In a city this big, the only place he wanted to be was Brookhaven General Hospital.

Forget it.

He wrestled with himself for a long time, about to tell Christopher to turn around—

His phone rang. He glanced at the screen, hesitated for a moment, then answered slowly. "What is it?"

"Captain, we have a situation. Last night, we spotted Elijah Clark." Alexander Wilson's voice came through, urgent.

"Where are you?" Liam kept his words brief, aware that Christopher was nearby.

"The same hotel you visited me at last time. I'm here with two colleagues. Can you come?"

"Alright. I understand." Liam hung up.

His expression grew more serious. He had known for a long time that Elijah Clark wouldn't be able to control his temper and would act prematurely.

But what he never expected was that Elijah would choose yesterday.

The day Emma married him.

Liam turned his sharp gaze to Christopher. "Park Hotel."

Christopher was surprised by the sudden change of plans, but he didn't dare ask questions.

He started the car and drove toward the hotel.

Ten minutes later, the car stopped smoothly in front of the building.

"Wait for me here. I'll be down soon." After giving his instructions, Liam straightened his coat, got out of the car, and walked inside.

"Captain, our people saw Elijah's car heading to an abandoned warehouse in the suburbs yesterday, but..." Alexander paused mid-sentence.

"But what?" Liam sat on the black sofa in the room, unbuttoning his coat as usual.

"The two men who were tailing Elijah yesterday were the same ones I assigned to protect Emma. They were afraid of losing him... so they couldn't keep up. That's why Emma had her accident. It's my fault for failing to protect her." Alexander had seen the news early that morning—Emma Johnson had been in a car accident. He was nervous.

After all, it was his duty to protect her.

This was a serious dereliction of duty.

Liam frowned. "What's the result, Alexander? Did you catch Elijah? You said you saw him. What about the evidence?"

"Captain, there were only two of us yesterday. Considering the safety of our comrades, I didn't let them take the risk of arresting him. I was also worried it would scare him off." Alexander spoke with confidence.
