Chapter 14

"Well, yes, Alexander. Remember last time when we raided the fox hunting leader's hideout? We found a notebook with a picture and seven letters. We finally cracked it—those seven letters spelled out seven words: 'Emma Johnson, magazine editor.' We've always suspected this person was connected to fox hunting. Now I've finally located her. I'm closing in."

Even though this was a major breakthrough, Liam kept his voice calm and measured, speaking slowly.

Sure enough, that cold, aloof personality was a disease with no cure.

"Really, Captain? Finding this person means we've already solved half the case," Alexander said excitedly on the other end of the line.

"I know. I'm calling to keep you informed. Also, tell the organization this must stay confidential. We can't scare the snake. Otherwise, I'm afraid fox hunting will slip away again."

"Yes, Captain. I promise to complete the mission. It's just... you've left the organization, yet you're still working for it. That's really tough. And how's your injury recovery, Captain?"

"Almost there. Once the wound heals, I'll apply to be transferred back to the organization..."

Liam's lifelong dream was to be a soldier. Unfortunately, during his last mission, his right hand was injured by a bomb.

It wasn't that the injury was severe. It was just that he couldn't hold heavy objects for long periods. Over time, his right hand would tremble uncontrollably. But for a soldier, that was the most fatal flaw.

With his hand injured like this, he couldn't handle a gun like a normal person. So the organization had repeatedly decided to send him home to recuperate and rest.

Holding his phone in his left hand, Liam stared blankly at his injured right hand, lost in thought.

"Captain, do you want me to apply to the organization to send some people to help you?" Alexander's voice was clear and firm.

Liam frowned slightly. Emma Johnson's innocent face flashed through his mind. "Not for now. I'm worried that too many people will scare the snake. Besides, fox hunting is such a cautious person. We can't afford any mistakes this time."

"Yes, Captain. I understand." On the other end of the phone, Alexander saluted respectfully, then hung up.

Emma Johnson.

At lunchtime, Olivia Davis, Emma's best friend, suddenly showed up at the company with two boxes of takeout to have lunch with her. Before she even reached the office, her loud voice could be heard: "Just started at a new company, and I have nothing to say to those new colleagues, so I came to you."

Olivia put down the takeout and sat on the sofa opposite Emma.

"Miss Tranquility, you should be grateful. How many people would kill to get into Pinnacle Corporation? Don't complain." Emma put down her work, opened the takeout, and started eating with her. "But I have some bad news to tell you."

"What bad news? Spill it. Let me have a laugh..."

Olivia was known for her quick tongue and fiery temper.

"Screw you. As my best friend, can't you wish me well?" Emma poked her forehead with her index finger and said angrily.

"Come on, don't play games. I just want to know what sad things could possibly happen to an older single woman like you?" Olivia took a big gulp of water from the cup beside her.

"I'm married..."

"Pfft..." Before Emma could finish, Olivia sprayed out all the water she had just drunk. Fortunately, it didn't land on Emma.

"What? You got married? No, how is that possible? When did it happen? Which blind man took a fancy to you?"

Olivia's temperament was always like this. She could ask six questions at once.

"Do you want me to answer your questions one at a time?" Emma said calmly.

"The most important one, of course!" Olivia's mouth was wide enough to swallow an egg.

"I got the certificate yesterday. Liam Williams and I."

"What?" Olivia's voice was louder than a mountain. "You mean Liam Williams, the young master of the Williams family?" Her tone couldn't have been higher. She was practically shouting, afraid others wouldn't hear.

"Oh." It seemed the whole world knew her so-called husband.

"What happened? Tell me quickly. I'm so surprised. I never heard you were dating him!" Olivia was very excited.

Emma frowned, then told Olivia about her accident, how Liam had gotten the wrong certificate, and how she had stayed at his house last night.

After hearing this, Olivia's eyes widened suddenly. "God, how did he get along with you? I mean, did you guys last night... you know..."

"What are you thinking, girl? Aren't you ashamed?" Emma got up, walked to her desk, took out her marriage certificate from her bag, and showed it to her.

But Olivia didn't seem to care about the marriage certificate. Instead, she asked curiously, "What's wrong with your leg? Why are you limping? Are you disabled?"

Emma was speechless.

Can we have a pleasant conversation?

"I hurt my knee last night..." As soon as the words left her mouth, Emma saw Olivia's lewd, suggestive expression and wanted to slap herself.

After mentioning the knee thing this morning, her mother had thought the same thing. Now, here she was again...

It was really... she didn't know what to say.

"What? Hurt your knee? I can't imagine how good Liam is? He really is... doesn't know how to be gentle..." Olivia's words were so domineering.

But what did she mean by that?

Emma rubbed her forehead. This was the consequence of being careless about making friends.

"Last night, when I was taking a bath, I fell and hurt my knee. Please don't think about it anymore. Thank you..."

"Really? So he didn't see everything? Naked?"
